We want to change the face of our crematorium,” village elders tell us.

And then they launched the massive operation of clearing the ‘ganda-baval’ trees around the crematorium. They also constructed a boundary wall and fence. Supported by GACL, we planted the trees, installed drip irrigation facility and appointed a vriksh mitra.

The committed efforts of the tree committee ensured most of the planted trees survived.

If each village strives to work as dedicatedly as Vakha village, each of our village can turn into ‘nandanvan’

ગામના વડીલોએ કહ્યું, અમારે અમારુ સ્મશોન અસલ કરવું હ્.

પછી તો શું ગાંડાબાવળથી ભરેલા આ સ્મશાનભૂમીની સફાઈ એમણે જાતે કરી. દિવાલ, વાડ બધુયે કર્યું ને અમે VSSM થકી વૃક્ષો વાવ્યા સાથે ડ્રીપની વ્યવસ્થા ને વૃક્ષોની સંભાળ રાખી શકે તેવા વૃક્ષમિત્રની નિમણૂક કરી. 

આ કાર્ય માટે મદદ કરી GACL સંસ્થાએ.. 

ગામની વૃક્ષમંડળીની ધગશ ઘણી એટલે વાવેલા વૃક્ષોમાંથી મહત્તમ ઉછરી રહ્યા છે. 

દરેક ગામ વખા જેવી ધગશથી કાર્ય કરે તો દરેક ગામ નંદનવન બની જાય..

આભાર GACL અને ગ્રામજનોનો તમે અમને ધરતીમાને હરિયાળી કરવાનો મોકો આપ્યો.

“You are such fortunate beings to have a job that  has the potential to change the lives of people just by signing a piece of paper!” I tell government officers whenever I happen to meet them. As a result of my work in social sector, I have had numerous opportunities to meet many officers and administrators who have changed the lives of the poor for the better. The compassion and empathy these officials showcase towards the marginalised and vulnerable are awe-inspiring.

The District Collector of Morbi Shri J. B. Patel is one such officer.

For years,  VSSM has remained perseverant in its efforts to ensure that the nomadic families scattered across Morbi obtain residential plots and have an address they can call home. Yet the efforts never found the desired outcome.

Shri J B Patel’s empathy towards the poor has accelerated the movement of pending applications. He instructed his team to speed up the allotment of plots to nomadic families staying on the village boundaries of  Habtiyadi, Mitana, Hadmatiya, Tankara, Morbi, Ravapar, Rafadeshwar, Nichi Mandal and other villages, and diligently follows up the progress made on the instructions he has given.

Meanwhile, Shri Bhupendrabhai Patel took charge as the Chief Minister of Gujarat. A very compassionate individual, he had called a meeting to understand what impedes the resolutions of long pending issues of the marginalised communities. After our interaction,  swift meetings were called  with the District Collectors to understand their administrative limitations, instructing them to quickly resolve the problems and report immediately.

Such push from higher authorities enthused proactive officers like Shri J. B. Patel. As District Collector, within a month of Chief Minister’s instructions,   he released orders of allotment of plots to all the nomadic families settled in Morbi awaiting residential plots. We were amazed at the speed at which the work was done and allotment orders were released. And glad that finally progress was made.

I hope this inspires the officials from other districts to find solutions to the pending files. If that happens, our respected Prime Minister’s dream of home for homeless could be realised soon.

We are grateful to our respected  Prime Minister, Chief Minister, Morbi District Collector and officials for being instrumental in the welfare of the marginalised nomadic communities.

These homeless families will soon have a home and an address of their own; no one will compel them to vacate and move their baggage.

Once again, thank you, respected Shri Piyushbhai Kothari, Shri Kiritbhai Shah (USA), Smt Dakshaben Shah, for the financial assistance to help us carry on such endeavours.

We help birds build their nests, let’s also help humans build their happy abodes. The recent plot allotment orders have benefited almost 800 families; you also can choose to help these families make a home by donating Rs. 85,000 to 1 lac per family.

અધિકારીઓ સાથે જ્યારે પણ વાત કરવાનું થાય ત્યારે હંમેશાં કહેતી હોવું, તમે ખરેખર ખુબ નસીબદાર છો. કુદરત તમને એવી નોકરી આપી છે જ્યાંથી તમે એક કાગળ પર સહી કરીને કોઈની પણ જીંદગી બદલી શકો. 

આમ તો સમાજકાર્યો સાથે વર્ષોથી સંકળાયેલી હોવાના નાતે કોઈની જીંદગી બદલી નાખનાર અનેક અધિકારીને હું મળી  છું. આવા અધિકારીઓની કાર્ય કરવાની પદ્ધતિ, વંચિતો પ્રત્યે તેમની અનુકંપા ઊડીને આંખે વળગે તેવી. 

આવા જ એક અધિકારી મોરબીના કલેક્ટર શ્રી જે બી પટેલ. મોરબી જિલ્લાના વિવિધ ગામોમાં રહેતા વિચરતી જાતિના પરિવારોને રહેવા પોતાની જગ્યા, સરનામુ મળે તે માટે VSSM વર્ષોથી મથે. પ્લોટની માંગણી કરતી દરખાસ્તો પણ થઈ ગયેલી. પણ કોણ જાણે કામને વેગ ન મળે. 

કલેક્ટર શ્રીની વંચિતોના કાર્યો થાય તે માટે લાગણી ઘણી તે એમણે હરબટિયાળી, મીતાણા, હળમતિયા, ટંકારા, મોરબી, રવાપર, રફાળેશ્વર, નીચી માંડલ વગેરે ગામોની સીમમાં કે પાઘરમાં પડાવ નાખી રહેતા ઘર વગરના પરિવારોને સ્તવરે પ્લોટ ફાળવવા તંત્રને સૂચના આપી. વળી તેઓ સૂચના આપીને અટક્યા નહીં એ કાર્ય પાર પડે તે માટે કડક ઊઘરાણી કરી. 

આવામાં રાજ્યના મુખ્યમંત્રી તરીકે શ્રી ભુપેન્દ્રભાઈ પટેલે કાર્યભાર સંભાળ્યો. તેઓ પણ ખુબ લાગણીશીલ. એમને વિચરતી જાતિઓના પ્રશ્નો સંદર્ભે મળવાનું થયું ત્યારે કાર્ય કેમ થતા નથી તે અંગે તેમણે વિગતે જાયજો લીધો. ને બીજા દિવસથી જ જે તે જિલ્લા કલેક્ટર શ્રીની કચેરીમાં વંચિત પરિવારોના કામો કેમ અટક્યા છે? કામ સત્વરે પૂર્ણ કરી રીપોર્ટ કરોની સૂચના…

ક્યાંક જે બી પટેલ જેવા અધિકારી કે જેમણે પોતાની રીતે કાર્યો કરવાનું શરૃ કરી દીધેલું તેમનો ઉત્સાહ વધ્યો.  

ને મોરબી જિલ્લામાં વસતા ને અમારા ધ્યાને હતા તે તમામ પરિવારોને પ્લોટની ફાળવણીનો હુકમ કલેક્ટર શ્રીએ એક જ મહિનામાં કર્યો.

નવાઈ લાગે છે. આટલું ઝડપથી કોઈ કાર્ય થાય? પણ થયું. 

અન્ય જિલ્લાના અધિકારી પણ આ શીખે તેમ ઈચ્છીએ.. જો આવી ત્વરાથી કામ થાય તો આપણા વડાપ્રધાન શ્રીનું સ્વપ્ન ઘરવિહોણા તમામ પરિવારોને ઘર આપવાનું ઝડપથી પૂર્ણ થશે..

વંચિત વિચરતી જાતિઓના કલ્યાણમાં નિમિત્ત બનનાર આપણા વડાપ્રધાન શ્રી, મુખ્યમંત્રી શ્રી, કલેક્ટર શ્રી તેમજ મોરબી વહીવટીતંત્રનો ઘણો આભાર…

ઘર વગરના આ પરિવારોને હવે પોતાનું સરનામુ મળશે જ્યાંથી કોઈ તેમને જતા રહો એવો જાકારો નહીં આપે…

This smile on our faces is fake; we pretend to look happy. The beggars can beg for food, and we cannot even do that. We have no choice but to endure the pain poverty brings along. If there is no food, we drink water and spend the night but cannot stretch our hands…”  Muktaba was in tears as she narrated their anginous living condition.

Muktaba and Jagdishkaka’s son used to fend for them, but last year the couple lost her only son to a freak accident. Somehow the marriage of their son did not last long, but the income he earned helped sustain Muktaba and Jagdishkaka. The family lived in a rented house, and life just rolled on until the tragedy struck. Their daughter is married into a joint family and her financial condition too is fragile, so she also could not help her parents financially.

With no choice left, Muktaba began working as domestic help in the neighbourhood. Even though it was difficult for her to work as domestic help because of her age and body condition, she continued working because the couple had no other choice. Kaka had suffered a stroke that had paralysed his half body, Muktaba also had the added responsibility of tending to his needs.

After the death of their son, the couple had no resources to pay the rent; hence they reached out to a builder and requested a place to stay against taking care of the premises. The builder sympathised and gave them refuge. This eased their living situation for a year. But as the apartments reached the completion stage, they were asked to move out.

The family had a house in Lodhika, but their nephew cheated with them and made Kaka stamp on the transfer document pretending it be a pension application. The couple has no money to fight a case or hire a lawyer.

When they learnt about a room for a cleaner at a building, they approached the residents and requested a place to stay. They were allowed to move into the room on the condition that Muktaba would sweep the premises for free. Which she does apart from cleaning dishes at a couple of houses. The remuneration from these odd jobs is meagre; hence, meeting the medical and food expenses is difficult.

When our Chayabahen and Kanubhai learnt about the condition of this couple, they immediately brought them under Mavjat’s care program, and a ration kit began reaching them every month.

I made it a point to go and see them recently. It was heart-wrenching to learn how greedy individuals take no mercy and lynch such destitute elderly.

VSSM provides ration kits to 225 such elderly in need of care and support. It helps bring food on their plate. You, too, can choose to support the elderly by donating Rs. 1400/- a month.

‘લાફો મારી ગાલ રાતો રાખવો પડે એવી અમારી હાલત છે. માંગણિયાર લોકો તો ગામ પાહે માંગી હકે પણ અમે તો એમેય નથી કરી હકતા. ખાવા ના હોય તો પાણી પીને પડ્યા રેવાનું પણ કોઈ પાહે…’

આટલું બોલતા બોલતા મુક્તા બાની આંખોમાં ઝળઝળિયા આવી ગયા. 

તેમનો દિકરો એક વર્ષ પહેલાં જ ગુજરી ગયો. દિકરાના લગ્ન કરાવેલા પણ કોઈક કારણસર એનું છુટુ થઈ ગયું. દીકરો દસ હજાર કમાવી લાવતો જેમાંથી તે મુક્તા બા ને જગદીશ કાકાને ખવડાવતો. 

ભાડાના ઘરમાં એ રહેતા. હખેડખે જિંદગી નીકળતી. ત્યાં અચાનક દીકરો ગૂુજરી ગયો. માથે આભ ફાટ્યું. એમને દીકરી ખરી પણ એ સંયુક્ત કુટુંબમાં રહે વળી એનીયે સ્થિતિ નાજુક એટલે એ કાંઈ એવડી મોટી મદદ ન કરી શકે.

આખરે મુક્તા બાએ  લોકોના ઘરે કચરા પોતા, વાસણ માંજવાનું શરૃ કર્યું. પણ આ કામ એમનાથી થાય નહીં. મૂળ શરીર ભારે, ઘૂંટણમાં પણ તકલીફ એટલે ભોંય પર બેસી કામ કરવામાં તોબા થઈ જાય પણ એ બધુ અવગણીને એ કામ કરે. 

વળી પાછુ કાકાને અડધા શરીરે લકવા થઈ ગયો. તે એમનેય ઉપાડી ઉપાડીને ફેરવવા પડે. 

આવામાં દિકરો ગયા પછી ભાડું આપી શકાય તેવા પૈસા રહ્યા નહીં. આથી નવા બંધાઈ રહેલા ફ્લેટના માલીકને માલ- સામાનની મુક્તાબા પોતે ચોકી કરશેનું કહી આશરો આપવા કહ્યું. બીલ્ડ઼રે વગર પગારે રહેવા સહમતી આપી ને એમનું વરસ નીકળી ગયું. 

ફલેટ બંધાઈ જતા જગ્યા ખાલી કરવાનું કહેણ આવ્યું. હવે પ્રશ્ન હતો રહેવા ક્યાં જશું નો? લોધિકામાં એમનું ઘર હતું પણ દીકરો ગુજરી ગયા પછી ભત્રીજો આવીને પેન્શનના કાગળ તૈયાર કરુ છુ અહીંયા સહી કરો એમ કહીને મકાનના કાગળ પર કાકાનો અંગૂઠો કરાવી લીધો ને મકાન એમના નામે કરાવી લીધું. એટલે એ રસ્તો બંધ થયો. હા કેસ કરવાનું મુકતાબા એ કહ્યું. પણ એ માટે એમની પાસે પૈસા નહીં. 

આમ રહેવાનો મોટો પ્રશ્ન ઊભો થયો. ત્યાં અચનાક એક બીલ્ડીંગમાં રહીશોએ એક નાનકડી ઓરડી બિલ્ડીંગનું સફાઈ કામ તેમજ વોચમેનનું કામ કરનાર માટે બનાવી હોવાનો ખ્યાલ આવ્યો…

મુક્તા બા ત્યાં પહોંચ્યા ને પોતાને એ ઓરડીમાં રહેવા દેવા વિનંતી કરી. બિલ્ડ઼ીંગના રહેવાસીઓએ બિલ્ડીંગમાં કચરો વાળવાનું કામ વિનામુલ્યે કરશો તો રહેવા દઈશુંનું કહ્યું. બુઢા માવતરોને તો આસરો જોતો હતો. એમણે એ કાર્ય માથે લીધું.

મુક્તા બા સવારે બિલ્ડીંગમાં કચરો વાળે. ને પછી બે ત્રણ ઘરના વાસણ ઘસવા જાય ને હજાર પંદરસો કમાઈ લે. પણ એમાંથી દવાઓ સાથે ઘરનું પુરુ કરવું મુશ્કેલ. એમની આ વિપદા અમારા કાર્યકર છાયાબહેન અને કનુભાઈના ધ્યાને આવી. તેઓ બેય માવતરોને મળ્યા ને તુરત સ્થિતિ સમજી અમે રાશનકીટ આપવાનું શરૃ કર્યું. 

હું હમણાં ગઈ ત્યારે એમને મળવા ખાસ ગઈ એ વખતે એમણે આ બધુ કહ્યું. સાંભળીને હૃદયદ્રવી ઊઠે. કેવો ફરેબ એમના પોતાના લોકોએ એમની સાથે કર્યો. 

ખેર આવા 225 થી વધુ માવતરોને અમે દર મહિને રાશન આપીએ છીએ જેથી એ પેટ ભરીને ખાઈ શકે. 

તમે આવા માવતરનો માસીક ખર્ચ રૃા.1400 આપીને તેમના પાલક બની શકો.

Mittal Patel blessed the daughter

Happiness is being instrumental in getting a daughter married, and we have experienced this happiness numerous times…

Vadia is a village with special identity and needs. It is desired and ideal for the daughters of this village to get married. VSSM has remained perseverant towards getting these daughters. married.  The organisation also offers interest free loans to families willing to set up independent business. Many of them have invested the loan amount in cattle rearing and farming while some have started their own business.

A significant number of children from Vadia are residing at VSSM operated hostels and receiving continued education. Quite a few of them have finished education and entered organised workforce.

This year we were blessed with the opportunity to marry 5 daughters of Vadia, we helped their families with wedding expenses and also contributed towards the trousseau. And following the tradition of north Gujarat, we also gift a buffalo to the daughter. It ensures financial independence of the newly married daughter at her marital home. To sum up, VSSM spends around Rs. 1.60 lacs in each wedding.

We have been able to gift buffalo to two of the five daughters we married off recently.  The remaining three will also receive the buffaloes soon. And while we had just married off five girls we received the news of sixth daughter getting married. We were indeed a happy bunch.

Vadia’s Rameshbhai and Babubhai have ensured the weddings were accomplished. Numerous families of Vadia are now  prioritising education and weddings of their daughters.

We wish the daughters of Vadia a very long and happy married life.

દીકરીઓના લગ્નમાં નિમિત્ત બનવું એનું સુખ ઘણુ મોટુ. 

વાડિયા એક જુદી ઓળખ ધરાવતું ગામ. ગામની દીકરીઓના લગ્ન થાય એ ઉત્તમ પરિસ્થિતિ. અમે 2012થી ગામની મહત્તમ દીકરીઓ પરણે તે દિશામાં પ્રયત્નો કરીએ. સાથે સાથે સ્વતંત્ર વ્યવસાય કરવા ઈચ્છતા પરિવારોને અમે લોન પણ આપીએ જેથી એ નવા વ્યવસાય કરી શકે. ઘણા લોકો લોન લઈને પશુપાલન અને ખેતી કરતા થયા છે તો કેટલાક નાનો મોટો વ્યવસાય પણ કરે છે. 

ગામના પરિવારોમાંથી કેટલાકના બાળકો અમારી હોસ્ટેલમાં ભણી રહ્યા છે ને એમાંના કેટલાક તો હવે પગભર પણ થયા છે.

આ વર્ષે અમે પાંચ દીકરીઓના લગ્ન કરવામાં નિમિત્ત બન્યા. લગ્નમાં દીકરીઓની જરૃરી ભેટ આપીયે. પરિવારને પણ લગ્નખર્ચ પહોંચી વળવા શક્ય મદદ કરીએ. સાથે અમારી ઉત્તર ગુજરાતની પરંપરા પ્રમાણે ધામેણું(ભેંસ) પણ આપીએ. જેથી દીકરીઓ પણ પગભર થઈ શકે. ટૂંકમા્ં એક દિકરીના લગ્નમાં 1.60 લાખની મદદ કરીએ. 

હમણાં ગામની પાંચ દીકરીઓના લગ્ન સંપન્ન થયા જેમાંથી બે દિકરીઓને ભેંસ આપી દીધી ને બાકી ત્રણ દિકરીઓને પણ નજીકના દીવસોમાં આપી દઈશું. 

પાંચ દિકરી પરણી ત્યાં એક બીજી દિકરીના લગ્નની પણ વાત આવી.. ચાલો રાજી થવાય એવું છે..

ગામના રમેશભાઈ અને બાબાભાઈ આ કાર્ય સંપન્ન થાય એમાં આગળ રહ્યા. ગામમાં ઘણા પરિવારો હવે પોતાની દીકરીઓને ભણાવી, લગ્નો કરાવી રહ્યા છે. 

બાકી લગ્નના બંધનમાં બંધાયેલા પાંચેય દિકરીઓને સુખી થાવની શુભેચ્છા..

આ કાર્યમાં મદદ કરનાર અમારા પ્રિયજન એવા  આદરણીય શ્રી ચંદ્રકાન્તભાઈ ગોગરી(આરતી ફાઉન્ડેશન), શ્રી ક્રિષ્ણકાંત અને ઈન્દિરા મહેતા, શ્રી રશ્મીનભાઈ સંઘવી, શ્રી અભય ભગત, શ્રી મીનાબહેન શાહ, શ્રી બી મંજુનાથજી, શ્રી ગીરીશ સાંઈવે, શ્રી અતુલ અંબાવત, શ્રી નિતીન સીંગાલા, શ્રી સરોર ચૌધરીના અમે આભારી છીએ.

 ‘We wish to turn the crematorium into a green oasis,’ Valjibhai, the sarpanch of Banaskantha’s Yavarpura village and tree devotees Bhamraji and Rameshbhai tell me. All of them also enjoy the support of the villagers. 

The village crematorium is vast, and the community has already planted 3000 trees and appointed a vrikshmitra to look after and raise the trees. 

VSSM insists on forming a Tree Committee, and we have one at each of the 62 sites we have planted trees, but Yavarpur Tree committee is the largest and most active of them all.

Along with community contribution, our respected Shri Krishnakant Mehta and Dr Indira Mehta have supported with funds to raise these 3000 trees. 

During my recent visit to Yavarpura, the community leaders shared their wish to plant more trees this season. 

It is such enthusiasm that fuels our willingness to keep striving. Our team members Naranbhai, Maheshbhai and Hareshbhai work very hard to fulfil the commitment. 

We have decided to plant 5 lac trees in June 2022. I hope that the universe conspires and helps us achieve the target.

ખુબ મોટુ સ્મશાન 3000થી વધુ વૃક્ષો ગાંડાબાવળની સફાઈ કરીને વાવ્યા ને એને ઉછેરવા વૃક્ષમિત્ર પણ રાખ્યા. અમે જે ગામમાં વૃક્ષો ઉછેરીએ તે ગામમાં વૃક્ષમંડળી પણ બનાવીએ. 

આમ તો અત્યાર સુધી અમે 62 સાઈટ પર વૃક્ષો ઉછેરી રહ્યા છીએ એમાં યાવરપુરાની વૃક્ષમંડળી સૌથી મોટી ને વળી પાછી સક્રિય પણ એવી.

3000 વૃક્ષો ઉછેરવા આદરણીય ક્રિષ્ણકાંત મહેતા ને ડો.ઈન્દિરા મહેતાએ મદદ કરીએ વળી ગામની ભાગીદારી તો એમાં ખરી જ.આ વર્ષે ગામમાં વધારે વૃક્ષો ઉછેરવા છે એવું હમણાં યાવરપુરા જવાનું થયું એ વખતે  સરપંચ શ્રીએ તેમજ અન્ય સૌએ કહ્યું…

આવા ઉત્સાહી ગામોને જોઈને અમને પણ કાર્ય કરવાની હોંશ થાય. અમારી બનાસકાંઠાની ટીમ નારણભાઈ, મહેશભાઈ અને હરેશભાઈ પણ એવા જ સક્રિય એટલે આ બધા કાર્યો સફળતા પૂર્વક પાર પડે..

જુન 2022માં 5 લાખ વૃક્ષો ઉછેરવાનો લક્ષાંક છે. કુદરત આ લક્ષાંક પૂર્ણ કરાવે તેવી અભ્યર્થના….

Can’t you help us find a permanent space?” Manaanath Madari and Arvindbhai Vansfoda appealed the above with a great deal of sadness.

The settlement Arwindbhai and 47 other families live in is Pandit Dindayal Nagar; it even has a board with this name. However, it is not a legit settlement. We have requested the District Collector to do the needful and provide these families official residential plots and make them residents of an official Pandit Dindayal Nagar.

VSSM has helped these families file applications for allotment of plots; the authorities are also very positive; all we need is quick approval of these applications and actions to help these families live a life free of fear.

VSSM’s Vinodbhai continuously strives to ensure these families receive the benefits of various government welfare schemes, and he is the reason these families have reached us.

We are hopeful for the administration to respond quickly on the appeal because it is also our respected Prime Minister Shri Narendrabhai Modi’s dream to provide home to each homeless family!!

‘બેન અમારે થાળે પડવું છે. આ સરકારી જગામાં છાપરાં નાખીને રહીએ છીએ પણ આ જંગલમાં ના મળે લાઈટ કે ના મળે પાણી. કોઈ ખાલી કરાવી દેશોનો ભય સતત લાગે તે અમને કાયમી જગ્યા મળે એવું કરી આપો ને?’

બાલાસિનોરમાં રહેતા મણાનાથ મદારી તેમજ અરવીંદભાઈ વાંસફોડાએ ભારે હૈયે આ કહ્યું.

અરવીંદભાઈ સાથે 47 પરિવારો જે જગ્યા પર રહે તે વસાહતનું નામ કોઈએ પંડિત દિનદયાળ નગર આપ્યું છે. આ નામ લખેલું બોર્ડ પણ ત્યાં છે. 

અમે કલેક્ટર શ્રીને આ પરિવારોને સત્વરે પ્લોટ આપી ખરા અર્થમાં પંડિત દિનદયાળ નામાભિધાન એમની નવી વસાહતનું કરવા વિનંતી કરીએ છીએ. 

રહેણાંક અર્થે પ્લોટ મેળવવા દરખાસ્ત પણ કચેરીમાં કરી દીધી છે. અધિકારી હકારાત્મક છે બસ ઝટ નિર્ણય લઈને આ પરિવારોને પોતાનું ભય મુક્ત જીવી શકે તેવું સરનામુ આપે એમ ઈચ્છીએ.

અમારો વિનોદ આ પરિવારોને સરકારની કલ્યાણકારી યોજનાઓની મદદ મળે તે માટે ખુબ મથે એજ આ બધા પરિવારોને અમારા સુધી લઈ આવ્યો..

જોકે આપણા વડાપ્રધાન શ્રી નરેન્દ્રભાઈનું પણ ઘરવિહોણાને ઘર આપવાનું સ્વપ્ન… એટલે તંત્ર ઝટ નિર્ણય લે તેવી આશા છે.

“My mother keeps ill,  majority of whatever little I earn is spend towards her medicines.”

“Why don’t you get a Ma Card issued for free medical treatment at government hospitals.”

“I have been trying for the same since a very long time, twice I got the income proofs issued  yet the card has remained elusive. I am tired of this entire process.”

During my conversation with a very disappointed Lalabhai Gadaliya, resident of  Devgama in Mahisagar’s Balasinor block I also learnt that he borrowed Rs 10,000 at a daily interest of 18 to 20 percent. The entire account was maintained in the dairy he showed me.

The shanty he called home  was surrounded with muck and muddy slush that provided a perfect breeding ground to mosquitoes and flies. Lalabhai brings cast iron skillets, slotted spoon and likes to sell from his front yard charpoy kiosk. Apart from this he also makes iron tools.

“Ben, Vinodbhai (VSSM team member) has helped us make application for allotment of residential plots, but we aren’t sure when would that happen…” the gloomy conditions had definitely immersed Lalabhai in sadness. And it was obvious to happen. Poverty and deprivation can break even the strongest beings.

We will be appealing to the government for the speedy issuance of Ma card and processing of the plots and also help him with a loan so as to free him from hefty interest rates of private money lenders.  

It does pain us to witness people undergo so much distress for avoidable reasons. A humble request to the officials to resolve issues of such humans on priority basis.

 ‘મારી મા બિમાર રહે છે. થોડું ઘણું કમાઉ એમાંથી ઘણું ખરુ દવા પાછળ ખર્ચાઈ જાય’

‘પણ તમે સરકારી દવાખાનામાં મફત સારવાર થાય તે માટે મા કાર્ડ કેમ કઢાવી લેતા નથી?’

‘એ માટે કેટલા વખતથી દોડુ છું આ જુઓ બે વખત તો આવકોનો દાખલો કઢાવીને આપ્યો પણ કાર્ડ હાથમાં આવતું નથી. થાકી ગ્યો છું બેન’

મહિસાગર જિલ્લાના બાલાસિનોર તાલુકાના દેવગામમાં દેવચોકડી પાસે રહેતા લાલાભાઈ ગાડલિયાએ ભારે હૈયે આ વાત કરતા પોતે દસ હજાર દૈનિક 18 થી 20 ટકા વ્યાજે પૈસા લાવતા હોવાનું કહ્યું અને વ્યાજના લેખા જોખા જેમાં રહે તે ડાયરી બતાવી. 

એ જ્યાં છાપરુ કરીને રહે તે છાપરાંમાં ને છાપરાં બહાર ભયંકર કાદવ કીચડ થયેલો. મૂળ છાપરાં બાજુમાંથી પસાર થતી પાઈપલાઈન તૂટી ગઈ હોવાના લીધે તે છાપરાંમાં માખી મચ્છરનો ઉપદ્રવ પણ ખરો.

તવી, ઝારા વગેરે સામાન લાવે ને છાપરાંની બહાર ખાટલે મુકીને એ વેચે.. આ સિવાય લોખંડના ઓજારો ઘડવાનું પણ એ કરે.

‘બેન આ વિનોદભાઈ (અમારા એ વિસ્તારના કાર્યકર) એ અમને પ્લોટ મળે એ માટે અરજી કરી દીધી છે. પણ કોણ જાણે ક્યારે પ્લોટ મળશે…’

લાલાભાઈને નિરાશા ઘેરી વળી હતી.. જોકે નિરાશ થવાય એવી જ સ્થિતિ હતી. ખેર સરકારમાં રજૂઆત કરીશું કે લાલાભાઈને ઝટ પ્લોટ ને મા કાર્ડ મળે.. સાથે એમને તગડાં વ્યાજમાંથી મુક્તિ મળે ને તેમનો ધંધો વધે તે માટે લોન આપવાનું પણ કરીશું.

પણ આવી તકલીફમાં જીવતા વ્યક્તિઓને જોઈને જીવ બળે છે…. અધિકારીઓને વિનંતી આવા માણસોના કામ ઝટ કરવા…

Whom would you call a good officer?

A  question I get frequently asked while speaking a public lectures. “One who is interested in public welfare, one who does not procrastinate progress behind the tangles of rules and regulations, but makes progress  possible even within the limiting rules and regulations,” remains my response.

The government has allotted residential plot to 159 nomadic families of Gondal. The next step was to begin construction on the same. Social Welfare officer Pandya Saheb is as compassionate as Aal Saheb. Both the officers had realised that the government aid of Rs. 1.20 lakhs is not enough for construction of a decent house.

Aal Saheb asked us to construct the houses of these families.

VSSM had bitter experience of constructing 65 houses at Rajkot’s Rampara Beti. The settlement had no facility for water. Despite our repeated appeals to the concerned authorities, they did not act. As a result, VSSM had to spend Rs. 5.30 lacs on water alone. Apart from this the efforts we had to put in to change the documents of  identity and proofs have tired us. The construction of sanitation units can be accomplished  under the MNREGA, but that too cannot be availed at Rampara Beti.

As a result of the above mentioned challenges we have far exceeded our construction budget in Rampara Beti. What if we experience similar challenges at Gondal?

We shared about these challenges with Shri Rajesh Aal sir, following which he immediately put his team to action. The Block development officer, Mamlatdar and all the concerned officials were summoned where he shared the intention of supporting construction of houses for these 159 families and instructed  to accomplish the task within the stipulated time frame. He directed the officials to provide power and water connections within 10 days and to level the land within the same time frame too. Aal sir also expressed the need to bring in  other well-wishers to contribute to the cause so as to build a strong house at the first instance.

Such compassionate officials are rare to find, I salute his sentiments towards the marginalised. No one is ever bothered to find if the houses were ever constructed on the allotted plots or to check the difficulties the families face as they begin to construct their houses.

If each official begins to work as Aal Saheb and Pandya Saheb, it is for sure that this county would not have a single homeless family.

As I began to leave after meeting the families who had been allotted the plots, a lady walks up to me and says, “Ben, we live in huts made with jute roofs. Summers are endured but it is a challenge to pass winters and monsoons. Kindly ensure that our houses are built as soon as possible. I am a rag picker but will pay Rs. 10,000 towards the construction of my house. Such amazing sentiments under such difficult living conditions.

We are grateful to the officials of Gondal for being instrumental in ensuring these families have a roof over their heads.

Almighty is definitely pleased with your gesture. May it inspire other officials to take such initiatives…

અચ્છા અધિકારી કોને કહેશો? 

મોટાભાગે વ્યાખ્યાન આપવા જવું ત્યારે લોકો દ્વારા આ પ્રશ્ન અચુક પુછવામાં આવે ને હું કહુ, જેમને પ્રજાના કલ્યાણમાં રસ હોય જે ફલાણા ને ઢીંકણા નિયમો બતાવી કાર્ય ટાળવાની જગ્યાએ નિયમોને લોકોને અનુકુળ પડે તેવા બનાવે તે મારે મન અચ્છા અધિકારી…

આવા અચ્છા અધિકારીનો આજે પરિચય કરાવું.. વાત છે ગોંડલના પ્રાંત કલેક્ટર શ્રી રાજેશ આલ સાહેબની..

ગોંડલમાં વિચરતી જાતિના 159 પરિવારોને સરકારે રહેવા પ્લોટ ફાળવ્યા.  હવે વાત આવી મકાન બાંધવાની.. સમાજ કલ્યાણ અધિકારી પંડ્યા સાહેબ પણ આલ સાહેબ જેવા જ લાગણીવાળા. તેમણે અને આલ સાહેબે જોયું કે સરકાર મકાન બાંધવા 1.20 લાખ રૃપિયાની સહાય પ્રત્યેક પરિવારને કરે પણ તેમાં ઘર બાંધવું મુશ્કેલ. 

આલ સાહેબે અમને આ પરિવારોના ઘર બાંધવાનું કામ માથે લેવા કહ્યું… 

રાજકોટના રામપરા બેટીમાં 65 વિચરતી જાતિના પરિવારોના ઘર બાંધવાના અનુભવો કડવા હતા. રામપરાબેટી વસાહતમાં પાણીની વ્યવસ્થા નહોતી 

તંત્રમાં રજૂઆત કરી છતાં કોઈ વ્યવસ્થા નહીં એટલે અમારે 5.30 લાખથી વધુ ખર્ચ પાણી પાછળ કરવો પડ્યો. આ સિવાય લોકોના આધાર પુરાવા બદલાવવા જે મહેનત કરવી પડી તે થકવાડી નાખે એવી.. 

વળી શૌચાલય ને મનરેગા અંતર્ગત પણ મકાન બાંધકામમાં મદદ મળે પણ આ બધુ રામપરાબેટીમાં અમે હજુયે મેળવી નથી શક્યા.. 

અમે ઘર બાંધકામમાં મદદ કરવાનું નક્કી કરેલું તેના કરતાં ખર્ચ અનેક ગણો વધ્યો..આવું ગોંડલમાં થાય તો?

રાજેશ આલ સાહેબ સામે આ બધી વાત કરી… ને એમણે તુરત એમની ટીમને કામે લગાડી. તાલુકા વિકાસ અધિકારીથી લઈને મામલતદાર શ્રી, નગરપાલિકા ને અન્ય લાગતા વળતા સૌને બોલાવી તેમણે 159 પરિવારોના ઘર બાંધકામમાં આપણે મદદરૃપ થવાનું છે એ ભાવના વ્યક્ત કરી ને સૌ અધિકારીઓને સમયમર્યાદામાં કાર્ય પૂર્ણ કરવા આદેશ આપ્યો. જમીનનું લેવલીંગ, પાણી અને લાઈટ તો દસેક દિવસમાં પહોંચાડી દેવાનું એમણે અધિકારીઓને કહ્યું… એ સિવાય મકાન સહાયમાં અન્ય સ્જનોને જોડવાનું એમણે કહ્યું જેથી મજબૂત ઘર બંધાય….

આવી ઉમદાભાવના વાળા અધિકારીઓ બહુ જુજ છે… તેમની આ લાગણીને સલામ કરુ છુ. બાકી પ્લોટ ને મકાન સહાય આપ્યા પછી કોઈ એ મકાન પૂર્ણ થયા કે નહીં તે જોવા જતું નથી અથવા વ્યક્તિ મકાન પુર્ણ નથી કરી શકતો તો કારણ તપાસવાનું થતું નથી…

આલ સાહેબ, પંડ્યાસાહેબની જેમ દરેક અધિ્કારી કામ કરવા માંડે તો આ દેશમાં ઘરવગરનો એક માણસ ન રહે એ નક્કી…

જેમને પ્લોટ ફળવાયા તેમની સાથે વાત કરીને હું નીકળી રહી હતી ત્યારે એક બહેને આવીને કહ્યું, બેન કંતાનના છાપરામાં રહીએ. ઉનાળો તો નીકળી જાય પણ ચોમાસુ ને શિયાળો કાઢવો બહુ કપરો.. તમે ઝટ ઘર બાંધવાનું કરજો. હું કાગળ વિણીને પણ મારુ ઘર બાંધવા તમને દસ હજાર આપીશ…કેવી સ્થિતિને કેવી ભાવના….

આવા પરિવારોને ઘર આપવામાં ગોંડલ અધિકારીગણ નિમિત્ત બનવાના.. આપ સૌનો ઘણો આભાર… 

કુદરત તમારી આ પહેલ માટે ખુબ રાજી થશે…ને તમારી આ પહેલથી અન્ય અધિકારીઓ શીખે એમ ઈચ્છીશ…
