“Ben, the money has been deposited in the account. Kindly check.”
“Ok Bapa. What the amount you have deposited?”
“I have deposited.”
“Bapa?”
Amiben, Chayaben would continue to shout on phone, their tone remaining high for a very long time but the response would be none as Bapa is a little hearing challenged. It is his job to inform and he is relieved with the fact that he just did that. Many a time he hangs up the phone immediately after informing us in one brief sentence. Premabapa, at the age of 65 is far from his retirement years. Along with his wife he trades stuff and wanders around Saurashtra. The items they sell aren’t fixed and change as per season and demand.
“Our work does not help us earn much, Ben!!” he would often tell me about the business he did with limited financial resources he had on hand.
Premabapa took a loan of Rs. 20000/- from VSSM and invested the money in his business. The couple didn’t have to worry about paying the interest. The income from business grew and they took another loan of Rs. 40,000. Currently they sell plastic chairs in Kodinar, Wankaner, Gondal and wherever market takes them.
The need to do this story about Premabapa is not to tell you all about how well his business is doing now but to brief you about his understanding of the program and his commitment towards repaying the loan. Premabapa is required to pay his EMI between 25th to 30th of every month. To be able to do that he is required to visit the bank and deposit the amount. A very challenging preposition. We were required to compel him to make this a monthly affair. Every month he requests someone to help him with depositing the money in VSSM’s loan account. After the payment the copy/image of the receipt needs to be sent to Amiben or Chayaben. Since he does not own a smart phone that too was an issue. So every time he steps out of the bank after depositing the amount Premabapa searches for a considerate individual. He would grab him, give him the number and request him to take a picture of the receipt and whatsapp it to us. After which he would call us “I have deposited the money and sent you the receipt,” and hang up immediately.
Premabapa’s instalment amount always reaches us on 25th of every month. If 25th is a public holiday or weekend he would deposit it on 24th but never 26th. “Your trust in me is of utmost importance. I cannot afford to lose that. Who will hold my hand if I fumble, who will lend money to people like us?” Premabapa was once robbed of Rs. 10,000/-. He was on his way to the bank to pay the instalment while a pickpocket robbed him of all his money. For two days the couple did not eat. He had called us to inform about the episode and request for two days extension. Ten thousand is a very big amount for individuals like Premabapa.
“Don’t worry if you cannot pay this month,” we had comforted him. Nonetheless he paid the instalment within two days. “We have to stand by our words,” he always says.
The hard work he puts in is tremendous. That is the reason the couple has managed to save Rs. 50,000/-.
How can we not adore such humble and truthful human like Premabapa.
Our Kanubhai and Chayaben, have managed to teach him financial literacy well. The understanding with which these two work is beyond comprehension. One can dedicate an entire chapter on their struggles.

‘બેન ખાતામાં પૈસા નાખી દીધા સે તમે જોઈ લેજો’
‘હા બાપા કેટલા પૈસા નાખ્યા?’
‘મે નાખી દીધા’
‘બાપા??’
અમીબેન, છાયાબહેન ગમે એટલી ફોન પર રાડો નાખે પણ બાપાના કાનપુરમાં હડતાલ એટલે સામેથી કોઈ પ્રતિભાવ મળે નહીં પણ બાપાને હાશકારો પોતાનો સંદેશો એમણે કહી દીઘાનો.
ઘણીવાર તો મે પૈસા નાખી દીધા કહીને પાધરો ફોન મૂકે દે.
આવા પ્રેમાબાપાની ઉંમર લગભગ પાંસઠ થી સીત્તેરની વચ્ચે. સરકારી નોકરીમાં તો સાહીઠે માણસ નિવૃત થઈ જાય પણ આ ગરીબ માણસોને નિવૃતિ લેવાનું પોષાય નહીં. પતિ – પત્ની બેય સીઝનલ ધંધો કરે અને એ માટે સૌરાષ્ટ્રમાં ભ્રમણ કરે.
પાસે ઝાઝી મૂડી નહોતી એટલે વ્યાજવા પૈસા લઈને ધંધો કરતા પણ એમાં કાંઈ બરકત નો થાય બેન એવું કહેતા પ્રેમાબાપાએ #VSSM માંથી વીસ હજારની લોન લીધી અને ધંધામાં એ પૈસા નાખ્યા. વ્યાજ આપવાની માથાકૂટ નીકળી ગઈ એટલે ધંધામાં સારી આવક થઈ પછી પાછા ચાલીસ હજાર લીધા. હાલે એ પ્લાસ્ટીકની ખુરશીઓ વેચવા કોડિનાર, વાંકાનેર, ગોંડલ ટૂંકમાં જ્યાં કામ જડે ત્યાં પહોંચી જાય.
ધંધો વધ્યો ને આવકેય વધી પણ એ બધાય કરતા મહત્વની વાત પ્રેમાબાપાની લોન બાબતે સમજણની.
લોન ભરવાનું એમણે પચીસ થી ત્રીસની વચ્ચે કરવાનું. વળી જાતે જઈને બેંકમાં ભરવાનું. બહુ મશ્કેલ હતું. પાકા ઘડે કાંઠા ના ચડે એવું એમને એ વખતે લાગેલું પણ જરા મીઠી જબરજસ્તી કરી એટલે બેંકમાં જવાનું એમણે કર્યું.
કોઈને વિનંતી કરે અને સંસ્થાની #લોનની પાસબુકમાં આપેલા એકાઉન્ટમાં એ પૈસા ભરાવે. પૈસા ભરાયાની બેંકમાંથી મળતી પહોંચ અમદાવાદ અમીબેનને અને રાજકોટમાં છાયાબહેનને મોકલવાની. પણ પાસે એન્રોઈડ ફોન નહીં. શું કરવું?
બેંકમાંથી બહાર નીકળી ચાની કીટલીએ જાય ત્યાં થોડું નિરીક્ષણ કરે અને કોઈ ભલો માણસ જણાય કે તુરત આ પહોંચ આ બે નંબર માથે વોટસઅપ કરી આપોને એવી વિનતી કરી, માંડીને વાત કરે અને પળવારમાં પહોંચ અમને પહોંચી જાય.
પછી ફોન કરીને કહી દેવાનું ‘પૈસા નાખી દીધા બેન તમને મળી ગ્યા? પોંચ પણ મેકલી દીધી…’
પ્રેમાબાપાને હમણાં રાજકોટ જવાનું થયું ત્યારે મળવાનું થયું. પચીસ તારીખે તેમના લોનના પૈસા અચૂક આવી જ જાય. ક્યાંક પચીસમીએ રજા આવે તો ચોવીસમીએ ભરી દે. પણ પચીસની છવ્વીસ થાય નહીં.
પ્રેમાબાપા આ અંગે કહે, ‘મારે ભરોષો જાળવવો જોવે નકર તમે ફરી હાથ ના ઝાલો અને અમારા જેવાને આવા પૈસા ધીરે કોણ ?’
આવા પ્રેમાબાપા એક વખત દસ હજાર ખીસ્સામાં લઈને હપ્તો ભરવા નિકળ્યા અને બસમાં એમનું ખીસ્સુ કપાઈ ગયું. પતિ- પત્નીએ બે દિવસ ખાધુ નહીં. એ વખતે ફોન કરીને એમણે સમગ્ર ઘટના કહી બે દિવસની મોહલત હપ્તો ભરવા માંગેલી.
પણ દસ હજાર બહુ મોટી મૂડી હતી.અમે કહ્યું, ‘આ મહિને નહીં ભરાય તો ચાલશે ચિંતા ના કરો બાપા.’ પણ એમણે બે દિવસ પછી પૈસા ભરી જ દીધા..
‘જીભાનનું પાક્કુ રહેવું પડે..’ એવું પ્રેમાબાપા કહે,
પ્રેમાબાપાએ ધંધા કરીને લગભગ પચાસ હજાર જેવી #જમાપૂંજી ભેગી કરી છે.
આવા પ્રેમાબાપા પર વહાલ કેમ ન આવે?
જો કે પ્રેમાબાપાને આ ઉંમરે વાટકી વ્યવહાર કેમ સાચવવો એ ભણાવવાનું અમારા કાર્યકર છાયાબહેન અને કનુભાઈએ બરાબર કર્યું. આ બેય કાર્યકરોની સમજણને પણ દાદ દેવી પડે એવી છે. તેમના સંઘર્ષની પણ કથા લખાય એમ છે…
