Mittal Patel plated Jambu Plant last year which have grown big

“The crematorium of our village wore a haunted look. There wasn’t a  single tree to stand under when cremation rituals were performed. Once the rites were over, everyone would spread across in the neighbouring farms to rest under the shade of a tree while the pyre burnt. However, last year with your help, we began planting trees at the crematorium, which has given it a soothing green cover. People now come to the crematorium to enjoy the shade of these trees.” Bharkawada’s ex-sarpanch Jayantibhai shared this very encouraging feedback.

Shri Girishbhai Raval, a retired forest officer, stays in the village. The plantation was carried out under his guidance; he also actively took care of the planted trees. As a result, 2471 of the  2500 trees we planted with Rosy Blue’s help have survived and grown. The community has replaced the 29 who could not withstand the heat.

“Ben, we have planted 45 varieties of trees; it is this diversity that will keep the soil and our environment healthy.” Hasmukhbhai, a resident of Bharkawada tells me.

The plantation drive of Bharkawada had made it as front page news of local daily Divya Bhaskar. The same article was also covered in the nation edition Dainik Jagran.

“Ben, we know the responsibility of nurturing and raising these trees. We promise to raise all the trees we plant.” I remember Haribhai and Bhikhabhai had promised me. “All of us have come together to put our efforts and raise these trees.”

જુઓ અમે વાવેલા કેવા ઉછર્યા તે…

“અમારા સ્મશાન પાસેથી અમે પસાર થતા તો ભેંકાર લાગતું. ડાધુઓ અગ્નિસંસ્કાર માટે કોઈને લઈને સ્મશાનમાં આવે તો છાંયડો ન મળે. એટલે બધા અગ્નિદાહ આપીને આસપાસના ખેતરમાં જ્યાં છાંયડો મળે ત્યાં વિખરાઈ જાય. એક વર્ષ પહેલાં અમારા સ્મશાનની આ હાલત હતી. પણ તમારી મદદથી અમે સ્મશાનમાં વૃક્ષો વાવ્યા ને આજે સ્મશાન હરિયાળુ થઈ ગયું. લોકો હવે અમસ્તા સ્મશાને બેસવા આવી શકે એવું રળીયામણુ થયું..”

આ શબ્દો છે બનાસકાંઠાના ભરકાવાડા ગામના પૂર્વ સરપંચ જયંતીભાઈના. ગામમાં નિવૃત ફોરેસ્ટ અધિકારી ગીરીશભાઈ રાવલ રહે. એમના માર્ગદર્શન હેઠળ વૃક્ષો વાવ્યા ને એ પોતે સક્રિય રીતે આનું ધ્યાન રાખે. પરિણામે અમે રોઝી બ્લુ ઈન્ડિયા પ્રા.લી.ની મદદથી વાવેલા 2500માંથી 2471 વૃક્ષો આજે ઉછરી રહ્યા છે. જે 29 બળ્યા તે પણ આ ચોમાસે ગામે વાવી દીધા. 

ગામના હસમુખભાઈએ કહ્યું, બેન અમારા સ્મશાનમાં 45 જાતના વૃક્ષો અમે વાવ્યા છે. જુદા જુદા વૃક્ષો વાવીયે તો એ જમીનને તંદુરસ્ત રાખે અને પર્યાવરણ માટે પણ એ સાનુકુળ.

એક વર્ષ પહેલાં જ્યારે વૃક્ષો વાવ્યા ત્યારે દિવ્યભાસ્કરના પહેલાં પાને હેડલાઈન છપાઈ હતી. શ્વાસારોપણના નામે. આજ હેડલાઈન સાથે પછી આખા દેશમાં દૈનિક જાગરમાં છપાયેલું. 

એ વખતે મે પણ જાંબુ વાવેલો જે ફોટોમાં જોઈ શકાય એવડો થઈ ગયો.. 

ગામના હરિભાઈ અને ભીખાભાઈએ કહેલું કે, “બેન જવાબદારી પૂર્વક કહીએ છીએ જેટલા વાવશું એ બધા ઉછેરીશું.. ને સાચે ગામનો સંપ સરસ એટલે એકબીજાના પૂરક બની સૌ વૃક્ષોને સાચવે છે દર રવિવારે સૌ શ્રમદાન પણ કરે”આભાર રોઝી બ્લુ ઈન્ડિયા પ્રા.લી. અને ગામલોકોનો તમારી મદદથી અમે બનાસકાંઠામાં હરિયાળી પાથરવામાં નિમિત્ત બની શક્યા છીએ..

Almost a year ago, Vishnubhai sent us an invite to help them raise trees at the crematorium of their village Maandala.

And they also agreed to VSSM’s pre-conditions of fencing the site and making arrangements for water during and after the plantation. What more could we ask for? So after a Vriksha Pujan ceremony, we began plantation at the  Mandala crematorium.

I had the opportunity to visit the Mandala crematorium to see the growth of the trees we planted a year ago. And we were happy with the progress the trees were making. VSSM appoints a Vrikhsa Mitra at each site; it is the Vriksh Mitra’s responsibility to nurture and protect each of these trees. VSSM also pays remuneration to each of these appointees.

However, the significant responsibility also falls on the Vrikrsha Mandali, the individuals who invite us to the village for the tree plantation. They ensure that the promises are kept, and the trees are raised well—our pranams to the Vriksha Mandali of Maandla village for diligently fulfilling their responsibilities.

The newly elected Sarpanch is equally sensitive; he has offered to provide land that can grow another 5000 to 7000 trees and fulfil all the raising requirements.

Our lessons with the tree plantation drive have given us an understanding that if each village works with a five-year plan to raise at least 20,000 to 25,000 trees, the mother earth will once again remain draped in a green cloak.

We hope for other villages to become as aware as Maandala village.

માંડલા ગામની સ્મશાનભૂમીમાં વૃક્ષો ઉછેરવાનું કહેણ એક વર્ષ પહેલાં વિષ્ણુભાઈ તરફથી આવ્યું.

અમારી શરત ગામની ભાગીદારીની. જેમાં પાણીની વ્યવસ્થા તેમજ તારની વાડ ગામ કરી આપે તે. 

બનાસકાંઠાના માંડલા ગામે આ મંજૂર હોવાનું કહ્યું. બસ પછી તો શું અમને તો ભાવતુ’તુને વૈદે કીધા જેવું.અમે વૃક્ષપૂજન કાર્યક્રમ કરીને સ્મશાનમાં વૃક્ષો રોપ્યા. લગભગ વર્ષ પછી વાવેલા વૃક્ષો કેવા ઉછર્યા એ જોવા જવાનું થયું ને સ્મશાન જોઈને રાજી થવાયું. 

અમે વાવેલા વૃક્ષો ઉછેરવા એની કાળજી કરવા અમે દરેક જગ્યાએ વૃક્ષમિત્ર મુકીએ જેને અમે પગાર ચુકવીએ. પણ વૃક્ષમિત્ર કરતા વધારે જવાબદારી ગામની વૃક્ષમંડળીની કે જેમણે અમને એમના ગામમાં વૃક્ષો વાવી ઉછેરવા આમંત્રણ આપ્યું હોય..

માંડલાની વૃક્ષમંડળીને પ્રણામ કરવા ઘટે. એમણે વૃક્ષોની  સરસ માવજત કરી.

મે વાવેલો પીપળો પણ સરસ ઉછર્યો છે જે ફોટોમાં જોઈ શકાય છે.

ગામમાં નવા ચૂંટાયેલા સરપંચ પણ ખુબ સરસ.. એમણે ને વિષ્ણુભાઈ જેવા વૃક્ષમંડળીના અન્ય સભ્યોએ બીજી 5000 થી 7000 વૃક્ષો વાવી શકાય તેવી જગ્યા અમને આપવાનું કહ્યું. જ્યાં શરત પ્રમાણેની સગવડ એ કરી આપશે.

દરેક ગામ પાંચ વર્ષનો લક્ષાંક પોતાના ગામમાં ગ્રીનકવર એટલે કે ઓછામાં ઓછા 20,000 થી 25,000 વૃક્ષો વાવી ઉછરવાનો રાખે તો આખી ધરતી લીલી થઈ જાય…

માંડલા ગામની જેમ અન્ય ગામો જાગે એમ ઈચ્છીએ…

‘Ben, we wish to plant thousands of trees in our village, we have space and are also prepared to clean and fence the selected site, but water remains an issue. We do not have enough water in our village. Even the 300 cows in our Gaushala face drinking water difficulties. If we raise the trees, the cows too will find a shade to rest, and so will other living beings.” Ishwarbhai from Banaskantha’s Soni villages shares water woes with us.

It would work wonders if we could make arrangements for water; it could help us raise 15,000 to 20,000 trees and quench the thirst of 300 plus cows. But unfortunately, the only option we had was drilling a borewell, but it was also an expensive option.

VSSM’s well-wishing friend Vijaybhai Doshi and his wife are tree and cow enthusiasts. VSSM shared with Vijaybhai its wish to drill a borewell for the benefit of trees and cattle; they immediately agreed to bear the cost provided the community also shares some of it. Finally, we began drilling a borewell with significant support from Vijaybhai and Soneshwar Goushala, also contributing to the cost.

A Bhoomi Pujan ceremony was performed to seek permission and forgiveness of Mother Earth before we drilled through her belly. The office-bearers of Soneshwar Gaushala and volunteers from the village remained present during the Bhoomi pujan.

We are grateful for allowing Naranbhai and me to perform the Bhoomi Pujan.

We will soon begin the plantation of 20000 trees in the village.

“બેન અમારા ગામમાં હજારો વૃક્ષો ઉછરે એવી જગ્યા છે અમે સફાઈ અને તાર ફ્રેન્સીગ પણ કરી આપીયે   પણ પાણીની વ્યવસ્થા નથી.. અમારી ગૌશાળામાં 300 ગાયો છે એને પણ પાણીની તકલીફ છે. જો વૃક્ષો ઉછરે તો આ ગાયો ને પણ કુદરતી છાંયડો મળે ને કેટલાય જીવોનું ઘર આ વૃક્ષો બને.. અને ગાયોને પણ  પાણીની શાંતિ થઈ જાય”

બનાસકાંઠાના સોની ગામના ભરતભાઈ અને ઈશ્વરભાઈએ આ કહ્યું…

એક સાથે 15000 થી 20,000 વૃક્ષો ઉછરે, ગાયોને પણ પીવાનું પાણી મળી જાય તો કેવું મજાનું કામ થઈ જાય પણ મુશ્કેલી હતી પાણીની… પાણી માટે બોરવેલ સિવાય વિકલ્પ નહીં અને બોરવેલ માટેનો ખર્ચ પાછો મસમોટો…

આમારા કાર્યોમાં અમને મદદ કરતા વિજયભાઈ દોશી ને તેમના પત્ની ગૌ અને વૃક્ષ પ્રેમી. તેમની સામે અમારી લાગણી વ્યક્ત કરી ને એમણે તુરત ગામલોકો થોડી મદદ કરે ને બાકીની અમે કરીશું એમ કહીને બોરવેલ માટે મદદ  કરવાનું સ્વીકાર્યું. 

આમ વિજયભાઈના મહત્તમ સહયોગથી અને સોનેશ્વર ગૌશાળાની ભાગીદારીથી સોનીમાં બોરવેલ બનાવવાનું શરૃ કર્યું.જે જગ્યાએ બોરવેલ કરવાનો છે ત્યાં મા ધરાના હૃદયમાં છેદ કરીને  પાણી ઉલેચવાના. એટલે  મા ધરતીની પેટાળમાંથી પાણી ઉલેચી રહ્યા છીએ તારી છાતી પર છેદ કર્યો એની માફી માંગી અને કદી ખૂટે નહીં એવું પાણી આપજેની પાર્થના સાથે ભૂમીપૂજન કર્યું.

સોનેશ્વર ગૌશાળાના પદાધિકારીઓ તેમજ ગામના સેવાકાર્યોમાં રસ ધરાવનાર સૌ હાજર રહ્યા. બોરવેલનું ભૂમીપૂજન કરવાનો ગામે મને અને અમારા કાર્યકર નારણભાઈને મોકો આપ્યો એ માટે આભાર…બસ 20,000 વૃક્ષોનું સરસ ગ્રામવન ત્યાં ઊભુ કરીએ…

Years back Mittal Patel gave their identity document which was acquired through VSSM’s efforts

“We have been wandering across Banaskantha but have found no place to settle down. Our work also keeps us on the move. What would we eat if we were to lead a settled life? No one likes to watch snake shows now; enforcing the Wildlife Protection Act means we had to give up our traditional occupation of snake charming and look for other works. All these downs have made us understand the importance of a house. As a community, we decided to stay close to Banaskantha’s Diyodar. We may go anywhere but always come back to Diyodar to celebrate or mourn important events! We live on a government wasteland;  they can ask us to move out of it anytime they wish. Please help us find a place we can call our own.”

Many years ago, Hamirbha Nathvadi shared this with us. Consequently, we began working towards getting plots allotted for 110 homeless Nathvadi families of Diyodar. When we started working with them, the families had no identity proof. So, VSSM initiated the process of getting all the required documents like Ration Card, Caste Certificate etc., in place. There was a time our team member Naranbhai would lug a massive pile of papers whenever he was called at the government offices. The efforts of Naranbhai and Ishwarbhai resulted in the accomplishment of these tasks.

VSSM tried to ensure these families got plots allotted at any of the wastelands in Diyodar, but because there is no wasteland in Diyodar, it seemed like an uphill task. As a result, we had to make repeated requests and get a resolution for wasteland issued for the allotment of wasteland to nomadic families. Finally, the families were given plots in Lavana and Ludra. However, they were unwilling to move to any of these places mainly because it was hard to find work in the region. The issue reached district Collector Shri Anand Patel and DDO Shri Swanil Khare’s office. Both these officers are empathetic and compassionate towards the problems of the marginalised population. They represented this unique issue of Nathvadi families to the policymakers and got a new resolution issued primarily for Diyodar. As a result, the families were allotted plots in Diyodar itself.

However, 15 Meer families still await the allotment of plots. Hopefully, they too will soon receive the plots to build their homes.

It has taken 13 years for these families to receive plots. Many times they have lost patience and hope. Many families living on the banks of the Diyodar lake have had to lose their homes, but we had asked them to remain hopeful. And after more than a decade, their patience has paid off. The families will now begin the construction of houses on the allotted plots. They will be receiving government aid, and VSSM too shall be supplementing the required amount to build long-lasting pucca homes for these families.

Our respected Prime Minister has pledged to provide a house to homeless families by 2022, and these pathbreaking decisions result from this pledge. We are grateful to the Chief Minister, District Collector, District Development Officer, Additional Collector, Sarpanch and all the officials who have helped us turn this dream into a reality.

VSSM’s Naranbhai and Ishwarbhai are reeling under immense joy, and their efforts have finally paid off.

“આખુ બનોસકોઠા રખડ્યા. પણ કાયમ રેવાનો ચોય આશરો ના જડ્યો. પાસા અમારા કોમય એવા ન એટલ રખડવું જ પડ. તમારા ઘોળે ઘર પકડીન બેહી જઈએ તો ખઈએ હુ? પણ આ હરપ(સાપ)ના ખેલ જોવા કોઈન ગમતા નહીં. પાસુ જંગલખાતાવાળાએ પ્રતિબંધ કીધો. તે હવે બીજા ધંધા હોધ્યા. પણ આ બધામો અમન ઘરનું માતમ(મહત્વ) હમજઈ જ્યું. બસ એટલે બનાસકોઠાનું આ દિયોદર પકડીન બેહવાનું નક્કી કીધુ. ભલે ધંધાપોણી હાતર આખુ મલક ભમીએ પણ હારા ખોટા પરસંગ ઓય દિયોદરમોં જ કાઢવાના.

પણ બુન જે જગ્યાએ અમે બેઠા એ સરકારી. ગમે ત્યાર ખાલી કરાવ. માથુ ઘાલવા અમારી પોતાની જગ્યા મલ એવું કોક કરો…”

ગામે ગામ ફરી પોતાના પરંપરાગત વ્યવસાયના આધારે પેટિયું રળનાર હમીરભા નાથવાદીએ વર્ષો પહેલાં આ કહેલું. એ પછી અમે દિયોદરમાં રહેતા આવા ઘરવિહોણા 110 પરિવારોને પોતાની જગ્યા – પ્લોટ મળે તે માટે મહેનત હાથ ધરી. એ વખતે તો આ પરિવારો પાસે પોતાની ઓળખના આધારો પણ નહીં જે બધા એક પછી એક અમે કઢાવ્યા. રાશનકાર્ડ, જાતિ પ્રમાણપત્ર વગેરે કાંઈ કેટલાય લટકણિયા. અમારા કાર્યકર નારણભાઈ તો કાગળિયાના થેલા લઈને જે કચેરીએ બોલાવે ત્યાં હાજર થાય. એમની ને કાર્યકર ઈશ્વરભાઈ આ બેઉની મહેનતથી આ બધુ થયું.

સ્થાયી સરનામુ મળે તે માટે દિયોદરમાં પ્લોટ મળે તે માટે તજવીજ હાથ ધરી પણ દિયોદરમાં ગામતળ કે સરકારી ખરાબો નહીં. જ્યારે વિચરતી જાતિઓને સરકારી ખરાબામાં જગ્યા ફાળવવાની જોગવાઈ અમે સરકારમાં ખાસ કરાવડાવેલી. પણ જમીન નહોવાના લીધે ઠેકાણું ન થાય. આખરે લવાણા અને પછી લુદ્રામાં આ પરિવારોને પ્લોટ ફળવાયા. પણ ત્યાં આ પરિવારોને જવાનું મન નહીં મૂળ ત્યાં કામના પ્રશ્નો.

આખરે વાત આવી કલેક્ટર શ્રી આનંદ પટેલ અને જિલ્લા વિકાસ અધિકારી શ્રી સ્વનીલ ખરે પાસે..બેઉ ખુબ ભલા અધિકારી. એમણે સરકારમાં આ પરિવારોના પ્રશ્નની વાત કરી અને દિયોદરમાં નવું ગામતળ નીમ કરાવ્યું. જેના લીધે આ પરિવારોને રહેણાંક અર્થે પ્લોટ ફળવાયા. 

જો કે 15 મીર પરિવારો હજુ બાકી રહ્યા અમને શ્રદ્ધા છે એમને પણ ઝડપથી પ્લોટ ફળવાશે.

13 વર્ષની મહેનત પછી આ પરિવારોને પ્લોટ મળ્યા. આવામાં વચમાં આ પરિવારોની ધીરજ પણ ખુટી જાય. દિયોદરના તળાવની પાળ પર રહેતા પ્રકાશભાઈ અને અન્ય પરિવારોના તો છાપરાં પણ તૂટ્યા. એ વખતે આ બધા ખુબ નાસીપાસ થયેલા. પણ અમે હિંમત આપી. સારુ થશે એવો વિશ્વાસ આપ્યો ને આખરે એ દિવસ આવ્યો. 

હવે આ પરિવારોના ઘર બંધાશે. સરકાર પૈસા આપશે ઉપરાંત અમે પણ મદદ કરીશું ને આ પરિવારો પણ પોતાની રીતે થોડા કાઢશે. આમ સહિયારા પ્રયાસથી સરસ ઘર થશે. 

વડાપ્રધાન શ્રી તમે સ્વપ્ન જોયું ઘરવિહોણાને ઘર આપવાનું એટલે આ સાકાર થયું. મુખ્યમંત્રી શ્રી, કલેક્ટર શ્રી, જિલ્લા વિકાસ અધિકારી, પ્રાંતકલેક્ટર શ્રી, સરપંચ શ્રી વગેરે પદાધિકારીઓનો ઘણો આભાર. આપ સૌની લાગણીથી આ બધુ સંપન્ન થયું.

અમારા કાર્યકર નારણભાઈ અને ઈશ્વરભાઈ બેઉ રાજી થયા. વર્ષોની એમની મહેનત રંગ લાવી.

Mafakaka dressed in a soiled dhoti was seated outside his tiny shanty under the shade of an extended tin roof. He worked as manual labour until he had the strength to do so, but his ability to work and earn a living has considerably diminished with age. Impoverished and lonely, Mafakaka has no one in the family to care for him.

It pains us to add such adjectives, but the truth is Mafakaka depends on others for his basic needs. For example, his neighbours and others bring him food. 

Kaka wants to look after himself, “I will not refuse if others come forward to help me, but I cannot ask others to suffice my needs; I am not a beggar.” Kaka said with a very polite smile. I was impressed by Kaka’s dignified approach.

VSSM’s Rizwan got in touch with Mafakaka after learning about his condition. Consequently, we began sending him our monthly ration kit. Although old, Mafakaka can manage to cook for himself, and there are some days when neighbours share food, and he does not require to cook. “I am at peace now; I don’t need to stretch my arms for begging.” Mafakaka shared about his current living conditions.

A small kiosk owner opposite Kaka’s home sells milk and groceries; sometimes, he gives Kaka supplies he might need. Kaka  loves to  drink tea and smoke pipe/ chillam. It would be worthless to lecture him to give up his addiction to chillum but had he been receiving the government’s elderly pension and ration over his ration card, life would have been little less stressful. We will keep trying to ensure kaka receives the elderly pension.

It pains us when we see elders like Kaka. They lead a lonely existence, with no electricity or a decent roof for shelter.   A proper roof is essential, especially during monsoons.

VSSM has been supporting 270 elderly individuals who otherwise don’t have anyone to care for them; we provide them ration and also take care of their medical needs

મફાકાકા એક નાનકડી ઓરડીની બહાર પતરાનો થોડો છાંયડો પડે એમાં મેલું ઘેલું ધોતિયું પહેરી બેઠેલા. મજૂરી થતી હતી ત્યાં સુધી મજૂરી કરી. હવે કામ થઈ શકે તેવું શરીર અને ઉંમર નથી. પરિવારમાં કોઈ નથી જે એમની સંભાળ કરે. એ નોંધારા.. 

આ નોંધારા લખતા જ કાળજુ કંપી ઊઠે.. મફાકાકાને ગામના સૌ ખાવા આપે ક્યાંક પડોશી પણ સાચવી લે. પણ એ બધી ઓશિયાળી. 

કાકાની ઈચ્છા પોતાનું કાયમી કોઈ ધ્યાન રાખે એવી. પણ એ કહે એમ,  હું કોઈ પાસે કશું માંગુ નહીં. હું ભીખારી નથી. મન થાય ને લોકો મદદ કરે તો હું ના નહીં પાડુ પણ હું કોઈ પાસે માંગીશ નહીં…આટલું કહી કાકાએ સરસ સ્મીત આપ્યું જે ફોટોમાં જોઈ સકાય. મને કાકાની આ ખાનદાની બહુ ગમી. 

અમારા રીઝવાનને મફાકાકાની સ્થિતિનો ખ્યાલ આવ્યો ને એ પહોંચ્યો એમની પાસે. દર મહિને રાશન આપવાનું અમે શરૃ કર્યું. કાકા પોતાની મેળે પોતાના જોગુ રાંધી લે. ક્યારેક કોઈ આપી જાય તો રાંધે નહીં. પણ એમણે કહ્યું હવે શાંતિ છે કોઈ સામે હાથ લાંબો નથી કરવો પડતો. 

એમને ચા રોજ જોઈએ સાથે એ ચલમ પણ પીવે. ચલમ છોડો એવું ભાષણ કાકાને આ ઉંમરે ન અપાય. પણ એમને સરકારનું વૃદ્ધ પેન્શન મળતું હોત અને રાશનકાર્ડ પર રાશન મળતું હોત તો એમને ઘણી રાહત થાત. 

કાકાના ઘરની નજીક એક દુકાન છે તે દુકાનવાળા ભાઈ બહુ દયાવાળા તે એ કાકાને દૂધ ને ક્યારેય અન્ય જરૃરી ચીજો પણ આપે.. 

પણ વૃદ્ધ પેન્શન મળે તે જરૃરી..અમે એ માટે કોશીશ કરીશું.

પણ કાકા જેવા માવતરોને જોઈને જીવ બળી જાય. ઘરમાં લાઈટ નથી. પતરા ચુવે છે.. 

સાથે એમની ઓરડી આગળ પતરાનું ઢાળિયું કરવાની જરૃર છે. જેથી એમને તડકાથી રાહત મળે. 

હાલ VSSM થકી અમે આવા 270 માવતરોને સાચવીએ છીએ. દર મહિને રાશન આપીએ છીએ. તમે  પણ આવા માવતરના પાલક બની શકો..

“Ben, next time you are in Harij,   I want you to meet a Ba whom we have been providing a ration kit every month.” Mohanbhai had requested.

And that is what I did. We reached Vansa, walking through a paved lane. We arrived at a front yard gate and walked slightly uphill to find some people gathered around a house. The Ba whom we had to meet was seated on the floor dressed in an orange saree. The folks gathered around were Dahi Ma’s maternal family. Vision-impaired Dahi Ma doesn’t have a house, and she stays in a small makeshift place whose tinned roof leaks during monsoons. So it has been a challenged existence for Dahi Ma.

Dahi Ma’s husband passed away long back, and her young son, too, had died three years ago. Hence, her family had come by to help her repair her shade by replacing the tinned roof with a cement roof rested on concrete rests. Dahi Ma’s eyes had welled up when she remembered her son/ Although her family had been persuading her to come to stay with them, she to leave the soil her son had lived upon was not an option she wanted.

Sureshbhai had shared a word about destitute Dahi Ma to VSSM‘s Mohanbhai. Dahi Ma would beg for food, and Sureshbhai would provide in whichever way he could, but that was not enough. Since he knew about VSSM’s Mavjat initiative, Sureshbhai requested to give a monthly ration kit to Dahi Ma. Eventually, we began sending a ration kit to Dahi Ma.

Dahi Ma manages to cook with the ration that reaches her; she no longer needs to beg for food.

“How are you Dahi Ma?” I inquired.

“It has been a great relief now that you have helped with the ration kit. I don’t need to stretch my hand for food.” Dahi Ma had said with tears rolling down her eyes. “The family will build a roof over my head, but it will not protect me from cold and rains.” Dahi Ma wished for a small room to protect her from the elements.

As I bid her farewell,  I assured her of helping her build a tiny house. I had the strength to give her this assurance because of our donors’ faith in us. It is challenging to spend the later years of life yearning for basic needs to be sufficed. Nevertheless, we will fulfil her need for a small house.

“બેન આપણે એક બાને રાશનની કીટ આપીએ છીએ. એમને તમે હારીજ આવો છો તો મળી લઈએ. તમે એમને ખાસ મળો એવો મારો આગ્રહ છે”

આમારા કાર્યકર મોહનભાઈએ આ કહ્યું ને અમે પહોંચ્યા વાંસા. પાક્કી સડકવાળી એક શેરીમાં ચાલતા ચાલતા એક વાડનું કડલું ખસેડી અમે ઢાળ ચડ્યા તો કેટલાક માણસો ત્યાં ઊભેલા. જે બાને મળવાનું હતું તે કેસરી સાડી પહેરીને ભોંય પર બેઠેલા. જે માણસો આવ્યા હતા તે આ ડાહીમાના પિયરીયા. ડાહી મા પાસે ઘર નહીં. એ ઢાળિયામાં રહે. પણ ઢાળિયાના પતરા કાણા. ચોમાસામાં એમાંથી પાણી પડે. એટલે એ ખૂબ હેરાન થાય. વળી ડાહીમાને આંખે દેખાતું નથી.

પિયરીયા કાંઈ સક્ષમ નથી પણ સીમેન્ટના પતરાંને થાંભલીઓ લઈને એ ઢાળિયું બનાવી આપવા આવેલા. 

ડાહીમાના પતિ વર્ષો પહેલાં ગુજરી ગયા. જુવાન દીકરો ત્રણેક વર્ષ પહેલાં ગુજરી ગયો. પણ એનો આઘાત ડાહીમાને ઘણો. એ દીકરાને યાદ કરી રડ્યા કરે.પિયરીયાએ પોતાના ત્યાં રહેવા આવવા કહ્યું પણ ડાહીમા કહે, જ્યાં મારો દીકરો મોટો થયો એ ભોમકા કેમ છોડાય?

એ નિરાધાર. 

ગામના સુરેશભાઈએ મોહનભાઈનો ડાહીમા સાથે પરિચય કરાવ્યો. તેઓ ગામમાંથી માંગીને ખાતા. સુરેશભાઈ પણ શક્ય મદદ કરે. પણ એનાથી ચાલે નહીં. અમે આવા નિરાધાર માવતરોને દર મહિને તેમને ચાલે એટલું રાશન આપીયે એવી સુરેશભાઈને ખબર ને એટલે એમણે ડાહીમાને રાશન આપવા વિનંતી કરી. ને અમે દર મહિને રાશન આપવાનું શરૃ કર્યું.

ડાહી મા એ રાશનથી રસોઈ કરી ખાય. આખો મહિનો રાશન ચાલી જાય છે એમને કોઈ પાસે માંગવા જવું નથી પડતું. ડાહી માને તમે કેમ છો એમ પુછ્યું તો એ રડી પડ્યા. ઓશિયાળી વેઠવાની તમે મદદ કરો તે હખ છે હવે એવું એમણે કહ્યું. એમની ઈચ્છા એક ઓરડી જેવું ઘર બને એવી. ઢાળિયું પિયરીયા બનાવી આપશે પણ એમાં ડાઢ ન રોકાય ને વરસાદની વાછઠ તો આવે..

હું એમને મળીને નીકળી ત્યારે કહેતી આવી કે અમે ઘર બાંધી આપવામાં મદદ કરીશું. મદદનો ભરોષો તમે સૌ અમને મદદ કરશોના આધારે આપ્યો… પણ આખુ જીવન આમ વલવલતું કાઢ્યું એમની ઈચ્છા ઘરની તો પુરી જ કરવી જ રહી. 

તમે પણ ડાહીમાનું ઘર બાંધી આપવા શક્ય મદદ કરજો.. સાથે મળીને એકમને ઘર બાંધી આપીશું. મદદની રકમ 9099936013 પર પેટીએમ કરી શકાય. અથવા નીચેના બેંક એકાઉન્ટમાં પણ ભરી શકાય.

“Can you help us plant trees at the ganda-baval infested crematorium of our village?” Banaskantha’s Samaumota village’s Sarpanch calls us with this request. VSSM’s Naranbhai and Maheshbhai visited the village to evaluate the onsite conditions.

The crematorium had live fencing, but the ganda-baval trees needed to be removed. The milk cooperative pitched in and we cleared the ganda baval bust from the site. And the Panchayat has helped bring water to the site. 

Once the basic requirements were met, it was time for VSSM  to begin digging the pits for the plantation. However, the soil is too tight to be drilled in; hence after digging 900 holes, we decided to wait for rain to soften the ground. We will dig up and plant the trees in one go. We will also set up a drip irrigation facility and appoint a Vriksh Mitra. We plan to plant 3000 trees at Samaumota.

The forest department will be helping us with the saplings. The collective efforts of village leadership, forest department and VSSM will ensure the village crematorium turns lush with trees.

 ‘અમારા ગામનું સ્મશાન ગાંડા બાવળથી ભરેલું છે. ત્યાં સારા વૃક્ષો વાવવા છે તમે મદદ કરશો?’

#બનાસકાંઠાના ડીસાના સમૌમોટાગામથી ગામના સરપંચ શ્રીનો ફોન આવ્યો ને અમારા કાર્યકર નારણભાઈ, મહેશભાઈએ સ્મશાનની મુલાકાત લીધી. 

સ્મશાન ફરતે વંડો કરેલો હતો. હવે જરૃર હતી ગાંડાબાવળને હટાવવાની. ગામની દૂધમંડળીએ એ માટે સહયોગ કર્યો ને સ્મશાનમાંથી ગાંડાબાવળને તીલાંજલી આપી. પાછુ પંચાયતે ત્યાં પાણીની સુવિધા પણ કરી આપી.

હવે અમારી ભૂમીકા શરૃ થઈ. અમે ખાડા કરવાની શરૃઆત કરી. પણ જમીન ઘણી કઠણ 900 ખાડા કરીને રહેવા દીધું. એક વરસાદ થઈ જાય પછી ખાડા કરી વૃક્ષો વાવવાનું સાથે સાથે કરી લઈશું. 

અંદાજે 3000 થી વધારે વૃક્ષો ઉછેરવાના સંકલ્પ સાથે વાવીશું. ડ્રીપની વ્યવસ્થા પણ કરીશું. સાથે પગારદાર માણસ જેને અમે વૃક્ષમિત્ર કહીએ તે પણ રાખી લઈશું.

વનવિભાગ પણ વૃક્ષો આપવામાં શક્ય મદદ કરશે. આમ ગામ, દૂધમંડળી, VSSM અને #વનવિભાગના સહિયારા પ્રયાસથી સમૌમોટાનું સ્મશાન #હરિયાળુ કરવાનો અમે પ્રયાસ કરીશું.

Mittal Patel discusses Water Management with the villagers

“Can you help us make a lake in our village? Our village has a low lying site where the rainwater flows. Although it is not a traditional lake, we want to create a shallow pond. And it would be best if we did not dig deep because the potters still use the clay from here. We want to deepen it just enough to hold up the water flowing during monsoons. It would enable water to trickle into the ground and recharge the water tables. So can you help us deepen the spot and create a pond?”

Hiteshbhai from Banaskantha’s Kaant village requested the above from VSSM’s Naranbhai. However, the site was not a traditional water body that was filled with muck and deposits. Still, considering the wish of Hiteshbhai and the community members, we eventually made a pond at Kaant. VSSM dredged the soil while the community lifted the excavated soil. 

The community had been insisting I make a visit to Kaant, which I did during my recent visit to Banaskantha. The leadership of Kant village is proactive regarding water and environment conservation, and we plan to increase environmental initiatives in this village. 

We have reached a point when it is crucial to conserve each drop of rain; hence such requests from the community should only be honoured and fulfilled.

‘અમારા કાંટનું તળાવ તમે ગાળી આપશો? ચોમાસાનું પાણી જ્યાં ભરાય છે તે જગ્યા પર તળાવ જેવું કશું છે જ નહીં. અમારે બહુ ઊંડુ પણ નથી કરવું. મૂળ એ જગ્યા પર માટી સારી છે. અમારા ગામના કુંભાર માટલા ઘડવા ત્યાંથી માટી લઈ જાય છે એટલે તળાવની બધી માટી નથી કાઢવી. પણ વરસાદનુ જેટલું પાણી આ જગ્યા પર આવે તે બધુ ત્યાં રોકાય અને જમીનમાં ઉતરે એ માટે તમે નાનકડુ તળાવ કરી આપો એમ ઈચ્છું છું. ‘

બનાસકાંઠાના કાંટગામના હીતેશભાઈએ આ વાત કરીને અમારા કાર્યકર નારણભાઈએ કાંટની મુલાકાત કરી. એ પછી અમે ગામનું તળાવ ગાળવાનું અમે શરૃ કર્યું. 

હીતેશભાઈ અને ગામના સૌની લાગણીને અનુલક્ષીને અમે તળાવ જેવી સ્થિતિ નહોતી તે જગ્યા પર તળાવ ગાળવાનું શરૃ કર્યું. ગામે માટી ઉપા઼ડવાનું કર્યું ને સહુના સહિયારા પ્રયાસથી નાનકડુ તળાવ ગામની મરજી પ્રમાણેનું અમે ગાળ્યું. 

હમણાં બનાસકાંઠા જવાનું થયું તે વેળા ગામની પ્રબળ ઈચ્છા હતી માટે ખાસ કાંટ જવાનું થયું. પાણી અને પર્યાવરણને લઈને કાંટ જાગૃત ગામ. 

આગામી દિવસોમાં આ ગામમાં પર્યાવરણલક્ષી કાર્યો વધારે કરવાની ઈચ્છા..

પણ પાણીના ટીપે ટીપાને બચાવવાનું કરવું પડે તેવી સ્થિતિ પર આપણે પહોંચ્યા છે માટે આ દિશામાં વધારે કાર્ય થાય તે જરૃરી. 

કાંટનું તળાવ પહેલાં અને હવે એ ફોટોમાં જોઈ શકાય.

“Ben, we believe in actions, not just words. When you had first visited this crematorium to discuss the tree plantation drive, you had apprehensions if we would have the same enthusiasm in raising the trees as much as we had in planting them. And we had requested you to trust us with it. Now tell us if we have been able to uphold that trust?”

Chandubhai from Banaskantha’s Ludra village asks us. Chandubhai is now the Sarpanch of Ludra, but when we began the plantation drive, he was a very enthusiastic local leader. 

With the support from Estral Pipes and Mumbai based Tusharbhai – Jyotiben, we planted more than 5000 trees at Ludra’s Thakor community crematorium.

It has been more than nine months, and as seen in the image these  trees are flourishing well. The back-breaking effort by Vriksh Mitr – Balvant Kaka and the personal attention of the community leaders have helped the trees to  grow well.

Even the Thakor community of Ludra has paid personal attention to keeping the plantation site clean and weed-free to help the trees grow well.

Along with bringing saplings and planting them, VSSM supports the remuneration of Vriksh Mitra and makes arrangements for drip irrigation. It also bears occasional expenses of pesticides etc. At the same time, the onus of clearing the site remains on the community.

Our team consisting of Naranbhai, Maheshbhai and Hareshbhai work very hard to ensure the trees are looked after, and it is their efforts that have helped helps bring success to such actions. 

These woodlands result from the partnership between VSSM and communities; imagine the number of forests we would be able to create if the also government joins in. We are working towards roping the support of  Banaskantha government and administration. We are on our way to finding some success with it. Hopefully, soon we shall have some successful outcomes from our combined efforts.

‘બેન ખાલી વાતો નહીં અમે કરી બતાવવામાં માનીએ… તમે પહેલીવાર અમારા સ્મશાનમાં આવેલા અને  એ વખતે  વૃક્ષ ઉછેર બાબતે વાત  થઈ હતી ત્યારે તમે કહેલું કે, હાલ ઉત્સાહ બતાવો છો પણ એવો ઉત્સાહ વૃક્ષ વાવ્યા પછી એની જાણવણીમાં બતાવશો? અને અમે બધાએ હા પાડી અમારામાં વિશ્વાસ મુકવા કહેલું. તો આજે હવે ક્યો તમારો વિશ્વાસ અમે જાળવ્યો કે નહીં?’

બનાસકાંઠાના લુદ્રાગામના સરપંચ જો કે સરપંચ અમે ગ્રામવન ઊભુ કર્યા  પછી બન્યા એવા ચંદુભાઈએ કહ્યું..

ઠાકોર સમાજની સ્મશાનભૂમીમાં અમે એસ્ટ્રલ પાઈપ અને મુંબઈમાં રહેતા તુષારભાઈ – જ્યોતીબહેનની મદદથી 5000થી વધુવૃક્ષો વાવ્યા… 

આમ તો વૃક્ષ વાવે નવેક મહિનાનો સમય થયો હશે પણ વાવેલા બધા કેવા સરસ ઉછર્યા એ ફોટોમાં જોઈ શકાય છે.       

વૃક્ષમિત્ર  તરીકે કાર્ય કરતા બળવંતકાકાએ  કરેલી કાળી મજૂરી આપણને દેખાય. એમની મહેનતના લીધે અને ઠાકોર સમાજના આગેવાનોની દેખરેખના લીધે વૃક્ષો સરસ ઉછરી રહ્યા છે.

વૃક્ષો વાવ્યા પછી વર્ષમાં ત્રણ થી ચાર વાર વૃક્ષોની વચ્ચેની જગ્યામાં સરસ ખેડ થાય તો વૃક્ષોનો ઉછેર સારો થાય.. લુદ્રાગામની આ સ્મશાનભૂમી જેમની છે તે લોકોએ સાથે મળીને  સફાઈનું બરાબર ધ્યાન રાખ્યું.

અમે વૃક્ષમિત્રને પગાર આપીએ. સાથે પાણી માટે ડ્રીપની વ્યવસ્થા કરીએ.  એ ઉપરાંત નાનો  મોટો ખર્ચ દવાઓ વગેરે કરવાનો કરીએ. હા વૃક્ષો લાવી વાવવાનું અમે કર્યું. ગામે સ્મશાનમાંથી ગાંડો બાવળ કાઢ્યો…

વૃક્ષ ઉછેર  માટે સતત મથતી અમારી ટીમ નારણભાઈ,મહેશભાઈ અને હરેશભાઈની પણ આ બધામાં જબરી મહેનત.. તેમની સતત દેખરેખથી આ બધુ સફળ પાર પડ્યું. 

આમ ગામની સહભાગીથી અમે આ કર્યું. આ કાર્યમાં સરકાર પણ જોડાય તો ગામે ગામ સરસ જંગલો ઊભા થઈ જાય… સરકાર ખાસ તો  બનાસકાંઠાનું વહીવટીતંત્ર અને વન વિભાગ અમારી સાથે જોડાય તેવા પ્રયત્નો છે અને એ પ્રયત્નો સફળ પણ થઈ રહ્યા છે..આગામી દિવસો આ પ્રયત્નોના સફળ પરિણામો પણ જોઈ શકીશું…
