In the past whenever the dam overflowed a thought always crossed my mind, “what if these waters were taken to the parched and thirsty lands of North Gujarat, Saurashtra, Kutchh!!”

| The rain helped bring water to lake |
Finally the Chief Minister of Gujarat made an announcement in this regard. The Sujalam Sufalam Canal, Dantiwada Dam and the lakes that had the pipeline for Narmada waters have been filled up with waters from the majestic Narmada.
In Banaskantha people rejoiced like never before. The waters from Narmada as well as the rains showed mercy this year. Deep inside I was fearing the worst. But the rain gods finally gave in.
In the past three years VSSM has facilitated and supported deepening of 87 lakes in Banaskantha.

This year the rains helped bring water to few lakes. One of which is in Suigaum’s Katav village. The picture shared here is only for your reference so it the on the ongoing water sensitization meeting. The video is of Adhgaum shared by Sureshbhai this morning. Apart from the rainwater, Narmada waters have also reached the lake.

The rains have brought the much needed cheer in the air. And the Narmada waters filling up the lakes doubled the joy.
Naran, Chirag and Bhagwan can breathe at peace atlast. It was their efforts and hard work that have resulted into such massive change in the community’s mindset towards water.

જ્યારે પણ ડેમ ઓવરફ્લો થતો ત્યારે એક વિચાર આવતો આ બધા પાણીને ઉત્તર ગુજરાત, સૌરાષ્ટ્ર અને કચ્છના નપાણિયા વિસ્તારમાં લઈ જવાનું થાય તો કેવું…
આખરે મુખ્યમંત્રી શ્રીએ આ અંગે જાહેરાત કરી..
સુજલામ સુફલામ કેનાલ, દાંતીવાડા ડેમ ઉપરાંત જે તળાવોમાં નર્મદા કેનાલની પાઈપ નાંખી હતી તે ભરવાનું સરકારે શરૃ કર્યું….

જો કે વરસાદે પણ લાજ રાખી.. બાકી મનમાં દુકાળ તો નહીં પડે એવો ભય પણ હતો…

જેમાંથી આ વરસાદમાં થોડા ભરાયા જેમાંનું સૂઈગામના કટાવનું એક હતું.. આ કટાવનું તળાવ અમે ખોદ્યું તે પહેલાંની સ્થિતિ ફોટોમાં સમજાય તે ખાતર મુકી છે.
બાકી અધગામનો વિડીયો આજે સવારે સુરેશભાઈએ મોકલાવ્યો.
વરસાદી પાણી ઉપરાંત સરકારે કેનાલથી આ તળાવને ભર્યું..
તળાવ ખોદાવતા પહેલાં ગામલોકો સાથે તળાવ કેમ ખોદાવવું તે સંદર્ભે અમે બેઠકો કરીએ આવી બેઠક અધગામમાં કરી તેનો ફોટો પણ સમજવા ખાતર મુક્યો ..

New horizons unfold for 18 children of VSSM….
| Nomadic families came to see off their children as they began a chapter of their lives |
The relationship I share with the nomadic and de-notified families is beyond comprehension. Our ties are beyond blood relations, these are the families who are my own. I believe in entire Universe being a family, but these children of lesser God needed more care and attention. We chose to love and care for them when others turned a blind eye to their existence.
It also gave us an unique opportunity to mother thousands of children of these humble communities.

15 children of our hostels , 13 boys and 2 girls who passed grade 10 this year i.e. 2019 have secured admissions in the Engineering Diploma program offered at Ganapat University.
3 boys secured admissions in a special diploma program offered by Maruti Suzuki. The company has also guaranteed well paid jobs to these youth once they finish their studying.
Our Dimpleben works relentlessly to ensure these kids study hard and well. She perseveres to find suitable courses and colleges for them. It is her efforts that are bringing such good placements, placing these kids at the threshold of engineering studies. These placements have spread cheer amongst the hostel team too. Our Valji, Bijal, Vijay, Kiran, Bharat all are delighted with these placements. They have worked really hard to make sure these kids study well, remain focused and do not drop out of schools. It is because of them they had such encouraging admissions in technical courses. It should be noted that our children are first generation school goers.
KSFR’s Udaybhai assisted in getting these children admissions to Ganapat University. The University has offered to take care of their loadging and boarding expenses.
We are grateful to KSFR and Ganapat University for making this possible. It is very well wishing individuals like these that make this world a better place. I am grateful that more and more individuals are being part of our journey of spreading the light of knowledge in

લોહીની સગાઈ નથી..
છતાં એક જુદા નાતે કેટલાય પરિવારો અમારા બની ગયા.
આમ તો સમગ્ર વિશ્વને પરિવાર માનીએ પણ કેટલાક એવા છે જેની ચિંતા થોડી વધારે કરવાની જરૃર હતી. જેને કુદરતનું વહાલ પણ જરા ઓછુ મળ્યું હતું તેવા પરિવારોને વહાલ કરવાનું અમે સ્વીકાર્યું..
આ પરિવારોના બાળકોએ અમને માતૃત્વનો જુદો અધિકાર પણ આપ્યો.
અમારી હોસ્ટેલમાં ભણતા અને વર્ષ 2019માં જેમણે દસમુ ધોરણ પાસ કર્યું તેવા 13 દીકરા અને 2 દીકરીઓને ગણપત યુનિવર્સીટીમાં ડીપ્લોમા એન્જીન્યરીંગમાં પ્રવેશ મળ્યો.

3 છોકરાંઓને મારૃતી સુઝીકી દ્વારા ચાલતા સ્પે. ડીપ્લોમાં કોર્સમાં પ્રવેશ મળ્યો. આ ત્રણે છોકરાંઓનું ભણવાનું પતશે કે તુરત તેમને મારુતી કંપનીમાં જ નોકરી મળશે. સો ટકા જોબ ગેરન્ટી અને એ પણ સારા પગાર સાથે આપવાનું પણ કંપની કરશે.
અમારા ડીમ્પલબેન આ બાળકો ભણે અને તેઓ સારુ કમાતા થાય તે માટે સતત પ્રયત્ન કરે અને તેમના પ્રયત્નોથી જ આ બાળકો એન્જીન્યરીંગ ભણવાનું કરશે.
હોસ્ટેલમાં આ બાળકોને સાચવાનું કરતા વાલજી, બીજોલ, વિજય, કીરણ, ભરત સૌ પણ રાજી. આ દોસ્તોના પ્રયત્નોથી ભણતા બાળકોની આ પહેલી બેચ ટેકનીકલ કોર્સમાં પ્રવેશ મેળવી શકી છે.
કે.એસ.એફ.આર. ના શ્રી ઉદયભાઈએ આ બાળકોને ગણપત યુનિ.માં પ્રવેશ અપાવવામાં મદદ કરી. યુનિવર્સીટીએ પણ દરેક બાળકની રહેવા, જમાવાની વ્યવસ્થા કરવાનું પોતાના શીરે ઉપાડ્યું.
KSFR અને ગણપત યુનિ.ના અમે આભારી છીએ.. આપ જેવા શ્રેષ્ઠીઓની મદદથી જ આ બધુ શક્ય બને છે…
પણ જ્યોત સે જ્યોત જલે એમ સૌ શિક્ષણરૃપી આ જ્યોતમાં જોડાઈ રહ્યા છે જેનો આનંદ સાથે આભાર વ્યક્ત કરી રહી છું…
ગણપત યુનિ.માં બાળકોને મૂકવા માટે ડિમ્પલબેન, વાલજીભાઈ ગયા. સાથે બાળકોના વાલીઓ પણ આવ્યા.
કોલેજ જોઈને વાલીઓએ કહ્યું, ‘અમે ક્યારેય વિચાર્યું નહોતું કે અમારા બાળકો આવી કોલેજમાં ભણી શકે.’

In Banaskantha’s Vanva Rampura we deepened 5 lakes of which 3 now have water in it. Respected Shri. Bhanuben Shah from Mumbai donated Rs. 25 lakhs to deepen lakes in one village. There was a small contribution from the government too. As a result of this massive contribution we could undertake the deepening of all the 5 lakes in Rampura.

During our primary meetings to engage with the community and leadership of Rampura many had shared, “we don’t remember when our lakes were last deepened or cleaned!!” Whereas some shared it was during the last great famine Gujarat had witnessed that the lake cleaning works were carried out.
We do aren’t aware of the period of this great famine they are talking about. But we are grateful that the lakes are now filled with waters. Hope the rain Gods continue to shower their blessings and fill up all the 5 lakes.

The Sarpanch and community of Rampura exhibited great understanding and support. VSSM’s Naran and Chirag remained at it and it is their hard work that is visible here.
My three very dear elders Nanditaben, Bhanuben and Rashminbhai… dear Nanditaben showed us the path, Bhanuben joined hands and respected Rashminbhai opened our eyes and made us take up this immensely important task of water conservation. My regards and gratitude for your continued support and encouragement.
આવ રે વરસાદ, ઘેબરીઓ પરસાદ
ઊની ઊની રોટલી ને કારેલાનું શાક,
ગાઈને મેધાની રાહ જોતા’તે આવ્યો ખરો..
બનાસકાંઠાના વાવના રામપુરામાં પાંચ તળાવો અમે ખોદ્યા. જેમાંથી ત્રણ તળાવો ભરાયા જે ફોટોમાં જોઈ શકાય છે.
મુંબઈના આદરણીય શ્રી ભાનુબહેન શાહે એક ગામમાં તળાવો ઊંડા કરવા 25 લાખની મદદ કરી. ઉપરાંત સરકારે પણ નાની મદદ કરી.
જેના લીધે રામપુરામાં આ કામ થઈ શક્યું.
ગામના લોકો સાથે તળાવ ઊંડા કરવા બાબતે બેઠક થઈ ત્યારે એમણે કહેલું, ‘અમારા ગામનું તળાવ ક્યારે ઊંડું થયું હતું તે અમને યાદ નથી’ તો કોઈએ કહ્યું, ‘પસીસો કાળ પડ્યો ત્યારે તળાવ ગળાયું હતું.’
ખેર પસીસો કાળ ક્યારે પડ્યો એનો ખ્યાલ નથી. પણ હાલ આનંદ તળાવ ગળાયા પછી એમાં ભરાયેલા પાણીનો છે.

While the last condition has been in effect since the launch of the interest free loan program, the first two preconditions were recently introduced. And they have sent a shock wave amidst the potential applicants. Planting the trees isn’t that big an issue for them however, what is objectionable to these communities is the mandatory screening for cancer.

Breast cancer is the second most fatal form of cancer amongst women. According to Vikaspedia, an online information guide by GOI, 1 in every 9 women carries the risk of breast cancer. In India 8 women die of cervical cancer every hour.

Instances of both these forms of cancer are rapidly rising. Yes, the rural women are ignorant and negligent towards these or forms of cancer. Women never prioritise their health. Hence, it is important their husbands encourage them to go for these screenings that help for early detection.
It is a huge challenge to convince these uneducated and ignorant communities, but it is not just them even the educated urban women have limitations when it comes to taking preventive measures.
Polio Foundation’s Dr. Bharat Bhagat has agreed to screen 10 women every week at Rs. 100 per person. If the numbers rise above 10, VSSM will support the cost. Although we have requested Dr. Bhagat to extend more assistance. Every Saturday, we bring women to the hospital. Last Saturday, 4 women walked out of the hospital.

Some women were quite ok today, but the fear was obvious. To ease them out even the team members and I got ourselves tested along with them.
We have decided to remain firm on the matter. The nomads are our family and we want to ensure they take care of their health. They need to understand it is important.

કેન્સરના કારણે જેટલી મહિલાઓના મૃત્યુ થાય છે એમાં બીજા ક્રમે સ્તન કેન્સર આવે છે. બહેનોના જીવનકાળમાં 9ની સામે 1 કિસ્સામાં સ્તન કેન્સરનું જોખમ રહેલું છે એવું વીકાસપીડિયાની સાઈટ પરથી જાણ્યું છે.
જ્યારે ભારતમાં દર કલાલે આઠ મહિલાઓ સર્વાઈલ કેન્સરના લીધે મૃત્યુ પામે છે તેવો અંદાજ છે.
બહુ જોખમી છે આ બંન્ને કેન્સર..
ઘરની સ્ત્રીઓ તૈયાર નથી પણ તેને તૈયાર કરવાનું ઘરના પુરુષો પણ કરતા નથી.
જોકે કહેવાતા ભદ્ર સમાજની બહેનો પણ પોતાના શરીરનું નિયમીત ચેકઅપ કરાવતી નથી તો #વિચરતી #વિમુક્ત જાતિઓમાં તો ક્યાંથી થવાનું.
બહુ મુશ્કેલ થઈ રહ્યું છે…
ડો. ભરત ભગત – #પોલીયો_ફાઉન્ડેશન એમણે દર અઠવાડિયે 100 રૃપિયામાં આ ટેસ્ટ દસ બહેનો સુધી કરી આપવાનું સ્વીકાર્યું છે.

‘હું તો ઠીક છું, મારે કોઈ ચેકઅપની જરૃર નથી…’

On 19thJuly 2019, I had the opportunity to meet our Prime Minister Shri. Narendrabhai Modi. The primary objective was to discuss the issues of nomadic and de-notified communities and to express our gratitude for his involvement towards resolving the issues of the nomads.
The Government Welfare Board for the Nomadic, De-notified and Semi-nomadic communities has not started functioning as yet, I shared. He assured he will look up into the matter. I also thanked him for my appointment as a Board Member.
We also talked about finding long term solutions to the twice emerged situation of flash floods in Banaskantha. If you remember the region witnessed a never before calamity in 2015 and 2017 when the poor and marginalised lost everything they had. We requested for construction of canals in the region.
Both Maulik and I had paid visit to the PM. When he saw Maulik along he joked…
“She has turned you into a nomad too!!”
“If I want to wander, he too needs to follow path!!” I had replied.
I am grateful to PM Shri Narendrabhai Modi, Shri Bhupendra Yadav and Shri Bhagwandas Panchal – three of whom are instrumental in giving us hope and doing some concrete work for these communities.
Hope the work begins soon for these communities who have experienced centuries of neglect and apathy.

આ સિવાય તેમનો આભાર પણ માનવાનો હતો..

સરકારે જાહેર કરેલું વિચરતી વિમુક્ત તેમજ અર્ધવિચરતી જાતિઓ માટેનું કલ્યાણકારી બોર્ડ હજુ સુધી કાર્યાન્વીત નથી થયાની રજૂઆત કરી. રજૂઆત ઉપર તેમણે તુરત આ અંગે સૂચના આપશે એમ જણાવ્યું.
આ બોર્ડમાં મેમ્બર તરીકે નિમણૂક કરવા બદલ પ્રધાનમંત્રી શ્રીનો આભાર વ્યકત કર્યો.
સાથે બનાસકાંઠામાં 2015 અને 2017માં પુર આવ્યું. આ પુરમાં પાણી નીકાલની વ્યવસ્થાઓ યોગ્ય ના હોવાના કારણેય ઘણું નુકશાન થયું. આમ ચોમાસાના પાણીના નીકાલની વ્યવસ્થાઓ માટે કેનાલો બને તે માટેની રજૂઆત પણ તેમને કરી.
હું અને મૌલિક બંને તેમને મળ્યા. મૌલિકને જોઈને એમણે હળવી મજાક કરતા કહ્યું,
‘તે આનેય વિચરતો કરી દીધો?’
મે એમને કહ્યું, ‘મારે વિચરવું હોય તો એનેય કરવો પડે ને?’

Tree plantation in Golvi : Returning the Favour to Nature…2
Trees are jewellery our earth adorns. We at VSSM, have nurtured a dream of covering our mother Earth with these jewels.
Until now we have just kept taking from this provider, the Earth. We never seek her permission. Do we?
An now we realise that it is these jewels that keeps us alive and kicking!!
VSSM has decided to carry out a massive tree plantation drive in Banaskantha. We have decided to begin with villages that are aware about the activities of VSSM.
21 villages have been selected in Banaskantha for the first phase of the community partnered tree plantation drive.
Yesterday we were at Golvi village. The sarpanch, Shri Dashrathbhai is very enthusiastic about the entire initiative.
He has decided on the place for the plantation of trees and also made tree protecting fences. They have already prepared 1000 pits for planting the saplings. Dharmabhai Desai has been assigned the responsibility of caring and nurturing these trees. VSSM and the village will share his remuneration expences.
“If we do not plant the trees now it will become difficult to survive on this planet. We want to turn our village green.
Dharmabhai loves tree and we are sure he will work hard to nurture and raise them.
The prepared pits were a little small, we have asked him to make them a little big.
The entire mission is now keenly awaiting the rains.
We are all praying for rains to arrive
With the hope that each village has its own woods to escape to….
ધરતીમાનો શણગાર વૃક્ષ.. વૃક્ષરૃપી શણગારથી આપણી પોષક ‘મા’ ને સજાવવાના સપના અમે સેવ્યા.
અત્યાર સુધી ‘મા’ને પુછ્યા વગર એની મંજુરી લીધા વગર બસ જોઈતું બધુ લીધા કર્યું.
પણ પછી સમજાયું કે એનો શણગાર જ આપણને જીવાડે.
એટલે નક્કી કર્યું ઘરતીનો શણગાર એવી હરિયાળી વધુ સ્થાપીત કરવી
ગામોમાં જગ્યા વધુ મળે એટલે અમારો ઘરોબો જે ગામોમાં હતો, જ્યાંના લોકો અમારા કામની પદ્ધતિને સમજે તેવા વિસ્તારમાં પ્રથમ વૃક્ષારોપણું કામ આરંભવું.
બનાસકાંઠામાં 21 ગામો પસંદ કર્યા છે. જ્યાં ગામની ભાગીદારીથી વૃક્ષારોપણ કરીશું.
ગઈ ગાલે ગોલવી ગામમાં જવાનું થયું સરપંચ દશરથભાઈ દેસાઈ બહુ ઉત્સાહી.
એમણે વૃક્ષારોપણ માટે જગ્યા પસંદ કરી અને અમારી શરત પ્રમાણે ઝાડની સુરક્ષા માટે ચારે બાજુ વાડની તૈયારી કરી દીધી.
વૃક્ષો માટે 1000 ખાડા કર્યા અને વૃક્ષોના જતન માટે ધર્માભાઈ દેસાઈએ સ્વેચ્છાએ જવાબદારી સ્વીકારી. ગામ અને VSSM બેય મળીને ધર્માભાઈને એમના કામનું મહેનતાણું ચુકવશે.
દશરથભાઈએ કહ્યું, વૃક્ષો નહીં વાવીએ તો જીવવાનું અઘરુ થશે. અમારે અમારા ગામને હરિયાળુ કરવું છે. ધર્માભાઈ વૃક્ષપ્રેમી માણસ છે એ જતન કરશે.
ધર્માભાઈએ ખાડા નાના કર્યા છે અમે ખાડા મોટા કરવા કહ્યું.
એક ઝાપટુ પડે પછી વૃક્ષો લાવવા છે.
બસ મેઘરાજાની પધરામણીની રાહ છે..
મહેર કર કુદરત એવી પ્રાર્થના સાથે..
ગામે ગામ વન ઊભા થાય તેમ ઈચ્છીએ….

Vadia youth takes initiative for the betterment of the village….
“Ben, whenever we are asked which village we belong to, we feel embarrassed to reveal that we belong to Vadia. Out village has always carried a bad image. And we want to change that image, wipe off that stigma. We are ready to work hard and with your support we want to change that image!!”
After our work in Vadia, such words seem like music to our ears. When the youth of the village is prepared to work towards change, one knows for sure that better times lie in the horizon.
In 1963, government had allotted 205 acres of land to the women of Vadia. The land was in such poor condition that the families could never work on it to make it productive. The administration tried giving farming incentives from time to time however, as the efforts were not continuous enough the desired results were never achieved.
Since 2005, VSSM has been consistently working towards improving the ground realities in Vadia and our persistence has begun paying off. Vadia, that was once arid and barren now looks lush with green farms all around. The families have also began taking interest free loans from us to begin cattle farming and dairy.
Bhikhabhai obtained loan from VSSM to buy buffalos. He intends to have a large cattle shade. After hearing the inspiring story of Lalabhai Raval who has had a successful venture with cow rearing and dairy after taking interest free loan from VSSM Bhikhabhai also plans to replicate his model in Vadia with addition of cows to his cattle wealth.
“
Ben anywhere we are, the waiting cattle compels us to return home by 4 PM. We have to return on time for them, milk them and take the milk to the dairy. Our thoughts are now focused towards our cattle.” Mukesh shared with a smile on his face.
Once the youth of Vadia begins working to earn money the hard way and the daughters continue to get married, no one from Vadia will face embarrassment to share the name of the village they belong to.
Yes, for sure we will be creating a Vadia of our dreams pretty soon.

‘અમે કોઈ ગોમમાં જઈએ અન ગોમના કોઈ પુસ ક ચોના તો અમે કહી નઈ હકતા ક અમે ચોના સીએ. બેન ગોમની જે ખરાબ સાપ પડી હ ઈન ભૂંસવી હ.
તમે સાથ આલો અમે મેનત કરશું પણ હવ ગોમની સાપ બદલાવવી હ એ નક્કી.’
વાડિયાના ભીખાભાઈ અને મુકેશની વાત સાંભળી રાજી થવાયું.
ગામના યુવાનો કામ કરતા થાય તેનાથી રૃડુ શું હોઈ શકે?
વાડિયામાં રહેતી બહેનોને સરકારે 205 એકર જમીન 1963માં આપેલી પણ બાવળના જંગલથી ભરી પડેલી આ જમીન પર તેઓ કશું કરી નહોતા શક્યા.
સરકારે વખતો વખત કોશીશ કરી પણ સતત પ્રયત્નો ના થતા ઈચ્છીત પરિણામ ના મળ્યું.
2005માં પહેલીવાર વાડિયા જવાનું થયું એ પછી VSSM દ્વારા થયેલા સતત પ્રયત્નોના કારણે નક્કર બદલાવ આવવા માંડ્યો છે.
એક વખતનું સુક્કુ ભઠ્ઠ વાડિયા આજે લીલુછમ દેખાવા માંડ્યું છે. લોકો ખેતી કરતા થયા છે અને ખેતીની જમીન હોવાના લીધે અમારી પાસેથી લોન લઈને લોકો પશુપાલન કરતા થયા છે.
ભીખાભાઈ એ VSSMની મદદથી ભેંસો ખરીદી છે. તેમની ઈચ્છા મોટો તબેલો કરવાની છે.
ભેંસો લાવ્યા પણ સંસ્થામાંથી લોન લઈને બે પાંદડે થયેલા લાલાભાઈ રાવળને જોઈને તેમણે ગાયો લાવવાનું પણ નક્કી કર્યું છે.
મુકેશ હસતા હસતા કહે છે,
‘બેન હવ તો બારા ચોક જઈએ તોય ચાર પેલા ઘેર પોંગવાની ચિંતા રે. ભેંસ દોવાની, દૂધ ડેરીમોં ભરાબ્બાનું આ બધા સિવાયના એકેય વિચારો હાલ અમારા મનમોં નહીં હેડતા.’
ગામના યુવાનો મહેતન કરતા થાય, ગામની દરેક દિકરી પરણતી થાય તો અમે વાડિયાના છીએ એવું કહેતા કોઈ વાડિયાવાસીને શરમ નહીં આવે એ નક્કી…અને હા અમે એવું વાડિયા બહુ ઝડપથી નિર્માણ કરીશું એ પણ નક્કી….

Mittal Patel’s work and efforts for Changes in Vadia village – A report by GaonConnection
इस महिला ने गुजरात के सबसे बदनाम गांव की बदल दी तस्वीर
साल 2005 की बात है। एक कॉलेज में पढ़ने वाली लड़की एक अखबार की कतरन लेकर गुजरात के सबसे बदनाम गांव में पहुंच जाती है। यह गांव बनासकांठा जिले का वाडिया गांव है, जो कि देह व्यापार के लिए जाना जाता है। लड़की का मकसद साफ था कि उसे इस गांव की तस्वीर बदलनी है, यहां की पहचान बदलनी है। इस लड़की ने इस गांव की तस्वीर बदलने के लिए इतना काम किया कि आज देह व्यापार के चंगुल से वाडिया निकल रहा है और बदलाव की राह पर है। ”मित्तल पटेल के आने से गांव में बहुत बदलावा आया है। उन्होंने इस गांव की लड़कियों की शादी करानी शुरू की, जिससे वो देह व्यापार के धंधे से दूर रह सकें। यहां के बच्चों को पढ़ाई करा रही हैं, ताकि वो अच्छा पढ़कर अच्छा कुछ कर सकें। इतना ही नहीं पहले गांव में कोई सड़क नहीं थी। इसे समाज से बिल्कुल काट कर रखा गया था। अब गांव तक सड़क है और इसकी देह व्यापार से अलग एक तस्वीर बन रही है।” यह बात वाडिया गांव की रहने वाली महिला सूर्या बताती हैं। मित्तल पटेल (38 साल) गुजरात में ‘विचरता समुदाय समर्थन मंच’ नाम से एक एनजीओ चलाती हैं। यह एनजीओ घुमंतू जातियों और बंजारों की जिंदगी संवारने का काम कर रहा है। मित्तल बताती हैं, ”जब मैं वाडिया गांव जा रही थी तो लोगों ने मुझे बिन मांगी सलाह दी कि वहां न जाऊं, वहां के लोग बुरे हैं, मेरे साथ लूट हो सकती है, मेरा मर्डर हो सकता है और भी इस तरह की बातें बताई गई। कुछ लोगों ने यह भी कहा कि उन लोगों के लिए देह व्यापार आसानी से पैसे कमाने का एक जरिया है, ऐसे में वो लोग इसे छोड़ेंगे नहीं, मेरी बात कोई नहीं सुनेगा।”
”इन सब बातों को दरकिनार कर मैं वाडिया गांव गई थी। जब वहां पहुंची तो देखा वहां के लोग बहुत बुरे हाल में थे। किसी के शरीर पर ढंग के कपड़े नहीं थे। पक्के मकान तो किसी के नहीं थे। ऐसे में यह तो साफ हो गया कि पैसा कमाना इनके लिए आसान नहीं है। यह मजबूरी में ही इस काम से जुड़े हैं। लोगों से बात करने पर पता चला कि इन लोगों को समाज से काट कर रखा गया है। किसी के पास कोई सरकारी दस्तावेज नहीं था। रोजगार की कोई व्यवस्था नहीं थी। देह व्यापार के चलते गांव का नाम इतना खराब था कि अगर कोई बाजार में सामान लेने जाता तो वाडिया गांव के होने की वजह से उन्हें सामान देने से इनकार कर दिया जाता। एक तरह में इस गांव को पूरी तरह से समाज से काट कर रखा गया था।” मित्तल पटेल बताती हैं, ”समाज की सोच क्या है यह आप इसी से समझ सकते हैं कि जब मैंने गांव से बाहर की ओर जाने के लिए रोड की बात की तो लोगों ने कहा कि नहीं वहां रोड नहीं बननी चाहिए, नहीं तो वो लोग बाहर आ जाएंगे। मैनें सोचा क्या ये लोग समाज का हिस्सा नहीं हैं। कई लोगों ने तो यह भी सुझाव दिया कि इस गांव से लोगों को निकालकर हर गांव में एक परिवार बसा देना चाहिए, जिससे अगर किसी पुरुष की इच्छा होती है तो वो अपनी इच्छा की पूर्ति कर सके। इतनी घटिया सोच है समाज की।” मित्तल कहती हैं, ”फिर लगा कि उनकी भलाई के लिए काम करना चाहिए। क्योंकि 10-12 साल की बच्चियां तक यह काम कर रही थीं। गांव के पुरुष की काम न करने की आदत भी एक वजह थी, जिसकी वजह से उन्हें ऐसा करना पड़ रहा था। हमने इनके राशन कार्ड बनवाए, ताकि इन्हें सुविधाएं मिल सकें। मैंने आज तक उनसे यह नहीं कहा कि आप गलत कर रहे हैं, क्योंकि मैं मानती हूं कि वो मेरा अधिकार ही नहीं है। मैं यह जरूर मानती हूं कि अगर लोगों को बेहतर सुविधाएं दी जाएं तो वो लोग खुद ब खुद बाहर आएंगे।” ”हमने वहां दो बोरवेल बनाए ताकि गांव की खेती अच्छे से हो सके। जब मैं पहली बार वाडिया गई थी तो वो पूरा गांव बंजर सा था, आज वहां एक भी खेत बाकी नहीं है, जहां पर लोग खेती नहीं कर रहे। इसके साथ हमने पशुपालन को जोड़ा, जिससे वो पशुओं का दूध बेचकर कमाई कर सकें। हमने बिना ब्याज के इन लोगों को लोन देना शुरू किया, जिससे कई लोग ने रिक्शा खरीद कर लाए हैं, कई लोग छोटी दुकान करके अपना काम कर रहे हैं। ऐसे इन लोगों के पास कमाई का जरिया बन सका।” ”इसके बाद जिस परिवार की हमने मदद की है और वो लोग बेहतर कमाई करने लगे हैं तो अब मैं उन लोगों के सामने यह शर्त रखने लगी हूं कि वो लोग अपनी किसी बेटी को देह व्यापार में नहीं डालेंगे। इसके साथ ही हमने बच्चों की पढ़ाई के ऊपर काम किया, क्योंकि बच्चे अगर पढ़ेंगे नहीं तो बाहर की दुनिया को जानेंगे नहीं, ऐसे में अपने गांव के हिसाब से ही बने रहेंगे। ऐसे में जब बच्चे बाहर निकले, बाहर के बारे में जान पाए तो घर पर कहने लगे कि यह सब गलत है।”
मित्तल पटेल बताती हैं, ”इस गांव की एक प्रथा है कि अगर किसी बच्ची की सगाई हो जाए तो वो देह व्यापार के धंधे में नहीं जाएगी। इस लिए हम छोटी बच्चियों की भी सगाई कराते हैं, ताकि वो इस धंधे में जाने से बच सकें। कई लोग कहते हैं कि यह गलत है, लेकिन अगर उनका जीवन बच रहा है तो यह सही भी है। हमने अबतक 35 बच्चियों की शादी भी कराई है। जब मैं शुरू में गई थी तो सोचा था कि 50 साल में अगर 2 लड़कियों को इस धंधे से बाहर निकाल पाऊंगी तो मेरा जीवन सफल हो जाएगा, लेकिन मैं 10 साल में ही बहुत बड़ा बदलाव देख पा रही हूं।” ”जब मैंने सगाई और शादी करानी शुरू की तो मुझे धमकियां भी मिलने लगीं। गांव में आने पर देख लेने की धमकी, मार देने की धमकी और भी बहुत कुछ कहा गया। क्योंकि कुछ लोग थे जो नहीं चाहते थे कि यह बदलाव आए तो वो धमका कर डराना चाहते थे। इन सब वजहों से कई बार मेरे परिवार ने भी मुझे ऐसा करने से मना किया। वो लोग कहते थे कि अगर तुम्हारी इच्छा है उन लोगों के लिए कुछ करने की तो डोनेशन दे दो, तुम क्यों खुद जा रही हो। मैंने उन्हें समझाया और बाद में वो लोग समझ भी गए।” मित्तल पटेल कहती हैं ”पहले गांव में 150 परिवार थे जो देह व्यापार में संलिप्त थे। हमारे काम की वजह से इसमें से 90 परिवार बाहर आ गए हैं, बाकी के भी आ जाएंगे। हम लगातार यही प्रयास कर रहे हैं कि गांव से यह बुराई दूर हो जाए।” मित्तल पटेल के साथ आज 60 लोगों की टीम काम कर रही है। गुजरात के 17 जिलों में इनकी संस्था काम कर रही है। मित्तल को अपने काम के लिए कई अवॉर्ड मिले हैं, इनमें 2017 कर नारी शक्ति सम्मान भी शामिल है। फिलहाल मित्तल पटेल घुमंतू जातियों के जीवन में सुधार लाने के लिए लगातार काम कर रही हैं।

Ratila reminded me of Bhamraji and Champaben. Their small shop is just outside the village. It was 4 o’ clock in the evening when the car we were travelling in arrived at their shop.
Seeing us alight from the vehicle, Champaben came running towards us with great joy.
“Let’s go home. I will cook a quick meal for all of you!” insisted Champaben.

“Honestly, all of us were really hungry. The entire morning remained busy with us visiting villages one after the other which had left us no time to have our meal. However, the scheduled meetings for the later part of the day did not leave any scope for us to enjoy the meal Champaben would have cooked for us with so much love.

“It is because of you that our shop is doing such good business. The son bought a four wheeler. While we both manage the shop, the son takes the jeep to sell the products in other villages.” Champaben described.
“How is business?”
“We are able to pay the loan instalments regularly hence, we can say the business is doing good! The profit we earned helped us arrange a marriage of one of our sons. To tell you the truth, things are going well. We are happy.”

Bhamraji and other nomadic families living in Ratila will soon be able to live in decent houses of their own, thanks to the sheer hard work of VSSM’s Naran whose efforts have been instrumental in allotment of residential plots to these families.
“It is just because of the organisation that our work gets done otherwise, who listens to poor like us. You all have changed lives of so many, can’t thank you enough!!” Bhamraji spoke from his heart.
We pray for peace and happiness of Bhamraji, Champaben, their son Umaji and all whose lives VSSM has touched.
Umaji bought a four wheeler after taking an interest free loan from VSSM. The picture of Umaji with his vehicle remains to be shared. Nonetheless, Champaben in her shop could be captured by us. They had taken a loan of Rs. 50,000 to start this shop. You can also see their residence in one of the images shared here.
People do question, “how do families living in such conditions manage to pay regular instalments?”
To which our reply is “they put faith in us and we completely trust their integrity! It is this mutual respect and faith that keeps us rolling!”

રાંટિલા આવ્યું અને ભમરાજી અને ચંપાબહેન ગવારિયા યાદ આવ્યા. ગામના પાધરે તેમની દુકાન. અમે ચાર વાગે દુકાન સામે ગાડી ઊભી રાખી.
અમને જોઈ દુકાનમાંથી ચંપાબહેન દોડીને બહાર આવ્યા,
એમણે ઉમળકાભેર આવકાર્યા અને કહ્યું,
‘હેડો ઘેર ખાવા રોધી નોખું’
સાચુ કહુ, ભુખ તો બહુ જ લાગી હતી. સતત એક ગામથી બીજે ને ત્યાંથી ત્રીજે ફરવામાં જમવાનો સમય ચુકાઈ ગયેલો. પણ આગળના પ્રવાસોના કારણે જમવા બેસાય એમ નહોતું.
ચંપાબહેન કહે, ‘તમાર પરતાપે દુકોન હારી હેડ. સોકરાએ ગાડી લીધી. મુ અન તમાર ભઈ દુકોન ઉપર બેહીએ અન ઊમો જીપમો કટલરીનો સોમોન લઈન ગોમે ગોમ ફર’
‘ધંધો કેવો થાય છે?’
‘તમાર હપ્તો બરોબર ભરાય સ એટલ ધંધો હારો હડ હ્ ઈમ કહી હકાય. ધંધામોં થેલા નફાથી એક સોકરાના લગનેય કીધા. જુઠુ નઈ કઉ પણ હવ બધી વાતનું હખ થઈ જ્યું’
રાંટિલામાં રહેતા ભમરાજી અને વિચરતી જાતિના અન્ય પરિવારોને રહેણાંક અર્થે પ્લોટ મળે એ માટે કાર્યકર નારણે ઘણી જેહમત ઊઠાવી.
પ્લોટ મળી ગયા હવે ઘરેય થશે.
પણ ભમરાજી કહે, ‘સંસ્થા હોય અન અમારુ બધુ કોમ પટે નકર અમાર ગરીબ ગરબોનું કુણ હોભળ. આ લોણે તો અમારા જેવા ઘૈઈકની જીંદગી બદલી નોસી. તમાર બધાનો ઓભાર મોનીયે એટલે ઓસો’
ભમરાજી તેમનો દીકરો ઊમાજી અને ચંપાબહેન સૌ સુખી થાય એવી ભાવના રાખીએ…
સંસ્થામાંથી લોન લઈને ઉમાજીએ ગાડી લીધી .જેનો ગાડી સાથેનો ફોટો બાકી રહ્યો. પણ ચંપાબહેનની દુકાન તો તમને ફોટોમાં ભળાશે. જે તેમણે 50,000ની લોન લઈને કરી છે. સાથે તેઓના રહેણાંકની સ્થિતિ પણ જોઈ શકાય છે. ઘણા કહે આવી હાલતમાં રહેનાર લોનના હપ્તા ભરે છે? અમે કહીએ છીએ.. અમારો એમના પર અને એમનો અમારા પર ભરોસો અકબંધ છે. બસ વિશ્વાસે ગાડુ ગબડે છે.
વિચરતી જાતિના આવા પરિવારોના જીવનમાં ઊજાસ પાથરવામાં નિમિત્ત બનાનાર સૌ પ્રિયજનોનો આભાર..
