Mittal Patel meets Laxmi Ma and her son

 “I have cooked dal-rice, but he is refusing to eat. How can he recover without eating? He is also feeling cold!!

After sharing this, she pointed towards her son lying on the charpoy next to hers and showed her son lying, shivering with cold under the blanket. Maheshbhai looked at me, he looked frail, as if age had caught up after long illness.

Laxmiben’s husband had passed away 15 years ago.  It was Mahesbhai who earned the living for his mother and self. And all of a sudden Mahesbhai fell ill.

“Is there anyone else in the family to take care of you?” we asked Laxmima.

The question brought tears into Laxmima. The air around grew thick with sorrow. We did not know how to respond!!

“Ma, please do not worry. We will take care of you, will ensure Maheshbhai receives proper treatment.” I assured

“Do not hospitalise him, who will take care of him at the hospital. Just get him treated and bring him back. I cannot…” Laxmi Ma  could speak no further.

“We shall do so, Ma!” I responded. I did not feel like saying anything more.

“I had another son, elder to Mahesh. He too developed some skin infection, the leg was swollen, he remained ill for some time and passed away before my eyes. And now it is him…” Laxmi Ma shared.

It is the children who take care of their parents but when parents need to become caregivers… it pains beyond comprehension.

VSSM, with the support it receives from its well-wishers, is providing ration kit to Laxmi Ma.

I was at Laxmi Ma’s to inquire if she needed anything else, but after witnessing the situation there was nothing more to ask.

What I witnessed today shook me, the mother-son duo living besides Nadiad’s Malarpur road surviving in a kuccha brick-clay house was utterly helpless, the condition they survived in was beyond comprehension.

I am grateful to VSSM’s Rajnibhai for identifying families who truly need our support.

We will be assisting Mahesbhai with his medical examination and further treatment.

Almighty, we are all your children, how can you put anyone under so much pain.  No one deserves to endure so much suffering. A prayer escapes my heart seeking protection for fellow brethren…

‘આ જુઓને બેન દાળ-ભાત રાંધ્યા છે પણ આ ખાવાની જ ના પાડે છે.. ખાધા વગર તે કાંઈ ચાલે? પાછુ એને ટાઢેય ચડે છે’ એમ કહીને એમણે પોતાના ખાટલાની બાજુમાં ગોદડુ ઓઢી ટુંટીયું વાળીને સુતેલા એમના દીકરાના મોંઢા પરથી ગોદડું હટાવ્યું ને મહેશભાઈ એ મારી સામે જોયું.. 

શરીર સાવ નંખાઈ ગયેલું. ઉંમર ઘણી નહીં હોય પણ લાંબી માંદગીના લીધે અકાળે વૃદ્ધ થઈ ગયેલા એ જણાયા.

નડિયાદમાં રહેતા લક્ષ્મી મા રાવળના ઘરવાળા 15 વર્ષ પહેલાં ગુજરી ગયા. એ વખતે મહેશભાઈ કમાઈને લાવતા ને મા- દીકરો જીવન ગુજારતા પણ અચાનક મહેશભાઈએ ખાટલો પકડ્યો. 

લક્ષ્મી માને કુટુંબમાં અન્ય કોઈ તમારુ ધ્યાન રાખવાવાળુ નથી? એવું પુછ્યું ને એમની આંખોમાંથી આંસુની ધારા વહેવા માંડી. ઘડીક તો વાતાવરણ ગમગીન થઈ ગયું. શું કહેવું કશું સમજાયું નહીં.

‘મા ચિંતા ન કરો અમે ધ્યાન રાખીશું. મહેશભાઈને દવાખાને લઈ જવાનું પણ ગોઠવી દઈશું..’  એવું મે કહ્યું તો સામે એમણે કહ્યું, 

‘એને દાખલ ન કરતાં. ઈન્જેકશ અલાઈન પાસો લઈ આવજો. દવાખાને એની ચાકરી કોણ કરે? અને મને એના વગર…’ 

આગળ એ કશું બોલી ન શક્યા….

‘હા એમ જ કરીશું મા’ આનાથી વધારે કશુંયે પુછવાનું મને મન ન થયું ત્યાં એમણે કહ્યું, 

‘મારે એક દીકરો હતો આના કરતાં મોટો પણ એનેય આની(મહેશભાઈ સામે આંગળી કરીને) જેમ પગમાં ખરજવું થયું ને પછી પગમાં સોજાને પછી લાંબી માંદગી. મારી નજર સામે જ એ ગુજરી ગયો.. હવે આની હાલત..’

બાળકો મા બાપની સેવા કરે એની જગ્યાએ માને  દીકરાની સેવા કરવાની… કાળજુ કેવું કંપતુ હશે આ માનું?

મા- દિકરો પેટ ભરીને ખાઈ શકે તે માટે VSSM સાથે સંકળાયેલા સ્નેહીજનોની મદદથી અમે આમને દર મહિને રાશન આપીએ. તે રાશન બરાબર મળે છે. વધારે કશું જોઈએ છે કે કેમ? એ વિગત મેળવવા ને સાથે એમની ખબર પુછવા હું એમના ઘરે ગઈ પણ હાલત જોઈને બીજુ કશુંયે પુછી શકાયું નહીં.

ખેડાના નડિયાદમાં મલારપુરામાં રોડની બાજુમાં જ ઈંટ માટીમાંથી ચણેલાં કાચા છાપરાંમાં રહેતા આ બેઉંની સ્થિતિ જોઈને મનથી હલી જવાયું… કલ્પના પણ ના કરી શકીએ એવી સ્થિતિ છે આ બેઉની. 

અમારા કાર્યકર રજનીભાઈ જેમણે આ પરિવારને શોધી આપ્યો તેમનો આભાર માનુ છું.. 

મહેશભાઈને દવાખાને બતાવવાનું તો કરીશું ને એમની તકલીફમાં સાથે ઊભા રહેવાનું પણ વસુદૈવ કુટુંબકમઃમાં માનીએ એટલે કરીશું.. 

સાથે કુદરતને,  આ બધા તારા સંતાનો છે એમની આ તકલીફ તુ કેવી રીતે જોઈ શકે છે? માટે હે ઈશ્વર કર્મનો સિદ્ધાંત બરાબર છતાં આવી તકલીફમાં કોઈનેય ન મુક. આમ કોઈને નોંધારા ન કરની તને પ્રાર્થના…

Almost four years ago, VSSM initiated Participatory Water Management efforts in Banaskantha. 117 community lakes are deepened so far. Amitbhai Joshi is a well informed and aware citizen residing in Banaskantha’s Bhachli village. On learning of VSSM’s initiative, he invited us for the same in his village.

As the name of this initiative suggests, the first precondition to launching any lake deepening initiative is community participation. VSSM bears the cost of JCB expenses, rest all the costs including contributions by individual households, have to be borne by the village community. The funds collected from the families are to be used for the upkeeping of the deepened lakes. However, despite of the fact that these efforts obviously benefited the village,  many villages do not agree to this preconditions. Even if the village leadership agrees to raise Rs. 500 from each house, it will add up to be a substantial collection. But the leaders remain reluctant to do even that.

But not the village of Bhalicha.

A joint meeting with village elders and youth was organised at the Ram temple premises. To our surprise, there were no questions raised when we shared the preconditions and the need to collect contribution. “It will be done!!” Amitbhai and other youth spoke in unison. We were elated to find such young men who are prepared to work proactively for the development of their village.

The Sardar Sarovar Canal remains in the vicinity to Bhalicha, it the canal overflows the water may spill over into the lake, but as a result of neglect of years the lake has become extremely shallow, there is no scope for water to accumulate. If efforts were made to deepen it, there was the potential of collecting more water and benefiting the farmers. It would enable the farmers to take all three seasons. Like everywhere else in Banaskantha, water scarcity has triggered migration from Bhalicha too. Since the arrival of Sardar Sarovar canal, many have returned and agriculture is flourishing. If all three lakes of Bhalicha were to deepened, the village is bound to prosper.

 The Gando Bawal/Prosopis juliflora or the Mad ZTree dominates the landscape around Bhalicha, we also proposed tree plantation drive in the village. The youth is prepared but that needs to be firmed up well. The lake will be deepened for sure.

બનાસકાંઠાનું ભાચલીગામ..

બનાસકાંઠામાં તળાવો ઊંડા કરવાનું અભીયાન અમે છેલ્લા ચાર વર્ષથી ચલાવીએ. અત્યાર સુધી 117 તળાવો અમે ઊંડા કર્યા. આ અંગે અમીતભાઈને ખ્યાલ આવ્યો ને એમણે ભાચલીમાં આ કાર્ય માટે અમને નિમંત્રણ આપ્યું.

અમારી શરત લોકભાગીદારીની..

તળાવ ખોદકામ માટે જેસીબી અમારુ, બાકી માટી ગામલોકો ઉપાડે ને શક્ય નાનકડો ફાળો પણ ગામલોકો આપે જે તળાવ ખોદવામાં જ વપરાય. પણ ઘણા ગામો આ ફાળા માટે તૈયાર ન થાય.. મને ખુબ નવાઈ લાગે.. શું કામ આપણા પોતાના ભલા માટે આમ તો ચોખ્ખા દેખાતા ફાયદા માટે ગામલોકો તૈયાર નથી થતી? ગામ આખુ ભેગુ થઈને ઘર દીઠ 500 ઉધરાવે તોય સારી એવી રકમ એકત્રીત થઈ જાય.. પણ આ દિશામાં આપણે બધા બહુ મોળા છીએ…

પણ ભાચલી નોખુ..

ગામના રામજીમંદિરમાં ગામના યુવાનો ને વડિલો સાથે બેઠક થઈ ને એમાં ભાગીદારીની વાત કરી. અમારા આશ્ચર્ય વચ્ચે કોઈએ સામે એકેય સવાલ કર્યો નહીં. એ થઈ જશે બેન… એવો અમીતભાઈ ને અન્ય મિત્રોનો સૂર.. પોતાના ગામના વિકાસ માટે આવો ઉત્સાહ દાખવનાર આવા મિત્રોને મળીને રાજીપો થયો..

ભાચલીની નજીક નર્મદા કેનાલ જાય. કેનાલ ઓવરફ્લો થાય એટલે એક તળાવમાં પાણી ભરાય પણ આ તળાવ ગળાયે વર્ષો થઈ ગઈ ગયેલા. તળાવ તદન છીછરુ. જો ગળાય તો વધુ પાણી સમાય ને લોકો ખેતીની ત્રણેય સીઝન લઈ શકે..

એક વખતે પાણીના અભાવે ગામના મહત્તમ લોકોએ સ્થળાંતર કરેલું. પણ પાણી આવતા ઘણા લોકો ગામમાં પરત આવ્યા ને ખેતી અને પુશપાલન કરવા માંડ્યા. ગામના ત્રણેક તળાવ ગળાય ને એમાં પાણી ભરાય તો ગામની સમૃદ્ધીમાં ઘણો વધારો થાય.

આમ તો ગામમાં ને ગામના ચરામાં મહત્તમ બાવળ જોઈ શકાય. અમે આ બાવળની જગ્યાએ બીજા ઝાડ વાવવા માટેનું આયોજન પણ ગામની ભાગીદારીથી કરવા ગામના યુવાનોને કહ્યું. એ લોકોએ હાલ તો એ માટે પણ તૈયારી દર્શાવી છે. બાકી તળાવ તો સાથે મળીને ગાળીશું એ નક્કી…

 This is about the marginalised families residing in Gandhinagar’s Chraada, Aajol, Ridrol, Delwada…

As we all know there are numerous poverty elevation and welfare schemes the state and central government launch time to time. If the benefits of these schemes were to reach the people they are designed for there would be no hunger, poverty or backwardness in this country. VSSM strives to ensure that the communities it works with access to these schemes and benefit from it. The government authorities also play their role in ensuring this happens. At times when the going gets tough as suggested we also draw the attention of our Chief Minister on matters that need his intervention, he takes due notice and instructs the officials to do the needful.

The proactiveness of the government has resulted in the clearance of files pending for years. The authorities are compassionately trying to resolve the pending issues.  And for this, I will be every grateful to our Chief Minister Shri Vijaybhai Rupani. Our Prime Minister is also empathetic towards these communities, he remains updated on the progress of schemes implemented for these poor communities.

I have experienced the power and ability to get things done when political and bureaucracy decide to work together. When they join hands they can resolve any challenges they face. I am grateful to everyone in government for the support they provide in solving chronic issues the marginalised communities face.

Recently, a meeting chaired by District Collector of Gandhinagar to discuss and find solutions to the long pending issues of marginalised communities of Gandhinagar. The Collector instructed his officials to find solutions to these challenges,  “bringing joy and happiness to the poor and destitute families is the most rewarding work. These families are really in need to experience your compassion. The satisfaction it will bring you will be incomparable!” he shared.

After the meeting 84 Devipujak families of Gandhinagar’s Delvada, Chrada, Aajol, Ridrol villages were issued BPL ration cards and many received caste certificates.

Since the families have received the documents that are fundamental to processing applications for residential plots, the authorities are working towards ensuring the same. These address-less humans will soon receive a place to build permanent houses.

The speed at which the papers are moving assures the challenges these families are facing shall be resolved soon. I salute these efforts the government is steering in to make the marginalised part of the mainstream.

VSSM team persevere very hard to resolve the issues these families tackle on daily basis. They make numerous rounds of the settlement. In Gandhinagar  Rizwan and Tohid worked hard. Govindbhai, Deepakbhai, Girdharbhai Kiranbhai etc.  from the settlement joined hands in these efforts. It is this collective hard work that is paying off. Almighty too is working to ensure our families encounter lesser challenges. Gratitude and prayers to almighty to give us the strength we need to continue persevering.  

વાત ગાંધીનગરના દેલવાડા, ચરાડા,  આજોલ અને રિદ્રોલમાં રહેતા વંચિતોની.

સરકારની કલ્યાણકારી યોજનાઓ ઘણી.. આ બધી યોજનાઓની મદદ છેક તળીયે પહોંચે તો દેશનું ખરેખર કલ્યાણ થઈ જાય.. અમે યોજનાઓની મદદ છેવાડે રહેતા વંચિત – વિચરતી જાતિના પરિવારોને મળે તે માટે સતત મથીએ.. અધિકારીગણનો સહયોગ પણ મળે.. 

પણ ક્યારેક કોઈ તકલીફ જણાય તો આપણા મુખ્યમંત્રી શ્રીએ કહેલું, મારુ ધ્યાન દોરવાનું ને અમે ધ્યાન પણ દોરીએ ને એમના તરફથી જરૃરી સૂચના પણ અપાય..આમ સરકારની સક્રિયતાના લીધે વર્ષાથી સરકારી કચેરીઓમાં પડેલી ફાઈલોનો નિકાલ હવે આવવા માંડ્યો છે. અધિકારીઓ સંવેદનાથી ઉકેલ માટે કોશીશ કરવા માંડ્યા છે. આ માટે મુખ્યમંત્રી શ્રી વિજયભાઈ રૃપાણીની હું ખરેખર ઋણી છું. 

આપણા વડાપ્રધાન પણ આ સમુદાયોની ચિંતા કરે છે.. એટલે જ વખતો વખત તેમના માટે થઈ રહેલા કાર્યોનો એ જાયજો પણ લે છે.. અધિકારીગણ ને રાજકીય પાંખ ભેગી થાય તો કેવું સુંદર કાર્ય થાય એ અમે છેલ્લા કેટલાક સમયથી અનુભવીએ છીએ..સરકારમાં બેઠેલા આપ સૌ પ્રત્યે રાજીપો વ્યક્ત કરુ છું..

તાજેતરમાં ગાંધીનગર કલેક્ટર શ્રીની અધ્યક્ષતામાં ગાંધીનગર જિલ્લામાં રહેતા વંચિત સમુદાયના પ્રશ્ને બેઠક થઈ ને એમણે તમામ અધિકારીને આ પરિવારોના પ્રશ્નો ઉકેલવા સૂચના આપી. તેમણે કહ્યું, આ કાર્ય મન અને હૃદયને સાતા આપનારુ અને આ પરિવારો ખરેખર જરૃરિયાતવાળા. તેમનું કાર્ય કરશો તો એનો સંતોષ અનેરો હશે..

આ બેઠક પછી #ગાંધીનગરના #દેલવાડા, ##ચરાડા #આજોલ, #રિદ્રોલમાં રહેતા રાવળ અને દેવીપૂજક સમુદાયના 84 પરિવારોને BPL રેશનકાર્ડ તેમજ ઘણા બધા વ્યક્તિઓને જાતિ પ્રમાણપત્ર આપવામાં આવ્યા. આ પ્રાથમિક પુરાવા મળતા હવે આ પરિવારોને ઝડપથી રહેવા પોતાની જગ્યા ને ઘર મળે તે માટે પણ અધિકારીગણે તજવીજ હાથ ધરી છે. ટૂંકમાં સરનામાં વિનાનાં માનવીઓને ઝટ સરનામુ મળશે.જે ત્વરાથી કાર્ય થઈ રહ્યું છે એ જોતા ઘણા પ્રશ્નો ઉકેલાઈ જશે તેવું લાગે છે.. મુખ્યધારામાં વંચિત પરિવારોને લાવવાના સરકારના પ્રયાસોને વંદન કરુ છું. 

VSSMની ટીમ ખુબ સંવેદનાથી આ બધા પ્રશ્નોના ઉકેલ માટે સતત દોડાદોડી કરે.. ગાંધીનગરમાં રીઝવાન અને તોહીદની જબરી મહેનત ને એમને ટેકો કરે.

વસાહતના લાગણીશીલ ગોવિંદભાઈ , દિપકભાઈ, ગીરધરભાઈ, કીરણભાઈ વગેરે… આપ સૌ સ્વજનોની મહેનત હવે રંગ લાવી રહી છે.. કુદરત હવે આપણા આ પરિવારોની તકલીફ દુર થાય તે માટે એક હકારાત્મક વાતાવરણ રચી રહી છે.. આપ સૌ પ્રત્યે કૃતજ્ઞતાભાવ..ને ઈશ્વરને હજુ વધુ બળ આપવા પ્રાર્થના…

Sutharnesdi village Sarpanch Dineshbhai is an enthusiastic human being. I had to spoke to him regarding the Bharathari families staying in the village. During the conversation, I could sense his aspiration to work towards the development of the village he led. Hence I very casually inquired, “Has the village lake deepened recently?” Well, these casual questions have become a habit these days.

“Ben, I have been thinking about it!” he had responded.

We were quick to grab this opportunity. We shared details of  VSSM’s participatory water management program.

“Ben, the village will contribute and so will I!” Such generous intention.

Under the lake deepening initiative, VSSM funds JCBB expenses for mud excavation, the village community needs to move the excavated soil through tractors and contribute in cash towards creating the maintenance fund. Sutharnesdi’s sarpanch and the community agreed to these clauses.

We became a little more greedy once the community agreed to lake deepening. “We should also carry tree plantation drive in the village,” I suggested.

Dineshbhai agreed to that too.  Later we visited the lake to be deepened. 

If the leadership of other villages are as proactive as Dineshbhai,  grassroots development will not remain a distant story!!

આમ તો દિનેશભાઈ સાથે મારી વાત ગામમાં રહેતા #ભરથરી પરિવારોના વસવાટને લઈને થયેલી.. 

પણ એ વાતચીતમાં એમનો ગામના વિકાસ માટેનો ભાવ પ્રબળ દેખાયો. તેમની આ લાગણી જોઈને તમારા ગામનું તળાવ ગળાયેલું છે? એવું સાહજિક પુછાઈ ગયેલું.. પેલું સુથારનું મન બાવળિયે એ કહેવાતની જેમ જ..

દિનેશભાઈએ કહ્યું, બેન તળાવ ગળાવવાની મારી ભાવના છે બસ પછી તો અમે તક ઝડપી લીધી.. લોકભાગીદારીથી તળાવ ગળાવવા બાબતની અમે વાત કરીને એમણે કહ્યું, બેન ગામ સહકાર આપશે વ્યક્તિગત હું પોતે પણ આપીશ…કેવી ઉમદા ભાવના..

અમે તળાવ ગાળીએ એટલે માટી ઉપાડવાનું કાર્ય ગામલોકોએ કરવાનું, જેસીબી અમે મુકીએ એ ઉપરાંત ગામલોકો યથાશક્તિ ફાળો ભેગો કરે જે ખોદકામમાં વપરાય એવી અમારી લાગણી..

સુથારનેસડીના સરપંચ અને ગ્રામજનોએ અમારી આ શરત સાથે તળાવ ગળાવવાની મંજૂરી આપી.. 

આ સહમતી પછી પાછી લાલચ વધી અમે કહ્યું, ગામમાં વૃક્ષારોપણ પણ કરીએ.. ને દિનેશભાઈને અન્ય સૌએ કહ્યું હા એ પણ કરીએ…એ પછી ગામનું જે તળાવ ગાળવાનું છે એ જોયું.. 

દરેક ગામ આ રીતે જાગે તો ગામોના વિકાસને ઝાઝી વાર ન લાગે…
