 “Do visit our crematorium once!”

If one isn’t aware of our work, such an invite to visit a crematorium can create a stir. But the community leaders of Ramsan village were inviting us out of their love, to showcase the beautiful place it had become.

However, eight months ago if there was a death in the village, 8-10 family members would first visit the crematorium to clean it, following which the body was brought for cremation. The place was briming with the wild growth of gando baval and litter all around. With the support from UNI Design Jewellery Pvt. Ltd and the local community, we planted 3500 trees, and almost all of them have taken roots and flourished.

The region’s groundwater tables have dropped to alarming rates, and the communities have leased 4500 hector land to solar companies. But, unfortunately, the installation of solar plants means the trees had to give their sacrifice. The reason the land was leased is that it had no water, but if we plant trees and create an environment that helps attract rains, people will not be forced to give up their land but farm on it. This is the reason everyone now wishes to plant more trees. 

We hope Ramsan can inspire other villages to play their part; each village roughly needs to plant 20 to 25 thousand trees. This is the dire need for a sufficient water future.

‘તમે એક વખત અમારા સ્મશાનમાં આવો!’

સ્મશાનમાં આવવા કોઈ આગ્રહ કરે અને અમારા કામથી પરિચીત ન હોય તો ઝઘડો જ થઈ જાય. પણ અમને તો પ્રેમવશ રામસણના આગેવાનો પોતાના સ્મશાનમાં આમંત્રણ આપી રહ્યા હતા. 

આઠેક મહિના પહેલાં ગામમાં કોઈ સ્વજનનું મૃત્યુ થાય તો સૌથી પહેલાં દસ પંદર લોકો સ્મશાન સાફ કરવા આવે અને સફાઈ થયા પછી ડાઘુઓ મૃતદેહને લઈને સ્મશાનમાં આવે. એવું ગાંડાબાવળ અને ગંદકીથી ભરેલું આ સ્મશાન.

જ્યાં ગામની ભાગીદારી અને અમારા સ્વજન યુની ડીઝાઈન જ્વેલરી પ્રા.લી.ની મદદ થી અમે 3500 વૃક્ષો વાવ્યા. આ વાવેલા વૃક્ષો જબરા ઉછર્યા. 

આ વિસ્તારમાં પાણીના તળ ભયજનક સ્થિતિએ પહોંચ્યા છે. ગામની લગભગ 4500 હેક્ટર જમીન લોકોએ સોલારકંપનીઓને ભાડે આપી દીધી છે. સોલાર પ્લાન્ટ નંખાય એટલે વૃક્ષો કપાય. સાથે આ જમીનો આપી દેવાનું કારણ તળમાં પાણી નહીં. જો વૃક્ષો વવાશે તો વરસાદ આવશે ને તળ ઉપર આવશે. લોકો ફરી ખેતી કરતા થશે એવી ખેડૂતોને આશા છે. એટલે વૃક્ષો માટે સૌને હવે મમતા થવા માંડી છે. 

રામસણ પાસેથી અન્યગામો શીખે ને પોતાના ગામમાં ઓછામાં ઓછા 20 થી 25 હજાર વૃક્ષો ઉછેરે. આ થવું આવનારા સમય માટે ઘણું જરૃરી.

“I did not have to spend a single penny for the election. I have worked a lot for the poor people of my village; hence the village elected me as their Sarpanch. Once again!”

Shri Kumbhabhai, Sarpanch of Delthi village of Banaskantha’s Vav block, shared the above. And he was speaking the truth; he played a pivotal role in bringing the benefits of various government schemes to the widow, handicapped, impoverished elderly, and other low-income families in need to support. He took the necessary measures and followed up on each application with the government office.

Rani Maa is a destitute elderly from the village; after Kumbhabhai shared her plight with our team member Bhagwanbhai, we sent a monthly ration kit to her. Along with the widow pension, the ration kit helps provide food security to Rani Maa. Recently, when we were in the village to meet Rani Maa, Kumbhabhai was also present, and Rani Maa showered praises on him and all his excellent work. “It is my duty to work for you all!” Kumbhaji had said.

But isn’t it the duty of all Sarpanchs? How many of them try to identify the people in need of support and bring it to the government’s notice? And it continues; how many follow-ups until the issue has been resolved?

In fact, my meeting with Kumbhaji reminded me of my visit to a village in Sabarkantha, where I met 18 women, primarily destitute or widowed. All of them are poor, but none receive any welfare support from the government. And no one was keen to ensure these women were linked with government welfare programs. Only one woman, who was not related to any of these Ba but was empathetic towards their condition, made efforts to ensure some benefit reached them. All these older women stayed in mud houses, yet, their income certificates the Panchayat had issued were all above Rs. 1.20 lacs. On the other hand, Sarpanch, like Kumbhaji, makes sure the required is done to bring the government benefits to those who need them the most.

We salute Sarpanch like Kumbhaji and pray that this story inspires other sarpanches to fall in line!

 “ચૂંટણીમાં મારે એક રૃપિયો ખર્ચવો નથી પડ્યો. પણ મારા ગામના ગરીબગરબાની મે ખુબ સેવા કીધી. એટલે ગામે મને ફેર જીતાડ્યો.”

બનાસકાંઠાના વાવતાલુકાના દેથળીગામના સરપંચ શ્રી કુંભાભાઈએ આ કહ્યું. એમની વાત પણ સાચી હતી. ગામમાં રહેતા વિધવા બહેનો, વૃદ્ધ નિરાધાર અને વિકલાાંગ વ્યક્તિઓ આ બધાને સરકાર દ્વારા જે સહાય મળે તે સહાય અપાવવામાં એમની ભૂમિકા મહત્વની. અલબત એમણે એ માટે ઘણી દોડાદોડી કરી. 

ગામમાં રહેતા નિરાધાર રાણીમાને VSSM માંથી રાશનકીટ મળે તે માટે તેમણે અમારા કાર્યકર ભગવાનભાઈને કહેલું ને અમે રાણીમાને રાશન આપવાનું શરૃ કર્યું. મૂળ સરકારી પેન્શન સાથે અમારી કીટ રાણી મા માટે મોટા ટેકા જેવી. અમે રાણીમાને મળવા ગયા ત્યારે કુંભાજી પણ ત્યાં હાજર. રાણીમાએ એમના ભરપૂર વખાણ કર્યા. કુંભાજીએ કહ્યું, મારી ફરજ છે ને મારે કરવાનું હોય. 

પણ ફરજ તો દરેક ગામના ઘણી – સરપંચની પણ કેટલા સરપંચ ગામમાં રહેતા સાચા જરૃરિયાતમંદને શોધી તેમની તકલીફોની વાત સરકારી સુધી પહોંચાડે? વળી પહોંચાડવું જ પુરતુ નથી પહોંચાડ્યા પછી સમાધાન પણ શોધી કાઢે. 

સાચુ કહુ તો કુંભાજીને મળ્યા પછી હમણાં સાબરકાંઠાના એક ગામમાં ગયેલી તે ગામ યાદ આવ્યું. જ્યાં એક સાથે લગભગ અઢાર બાઓને હું મળેલી જેમાંના ઘણા નિરાધાર હતા, ઘણા વિધવા હતા. આર્થિક સ્થિતિ નબળી પણ તેમને સરકારની સહાય મળતી નહોતી. ગામના કોઈને એમને સહાય મળે તેમાં રસ નહોતો. એક બહેન જેમને આ બધા બા સાથે કોઈ નાતો નહીં પણ માનવતાના ધોરણે એ પ્રયત્નો કર્યા કરે. પણ આ બધા બા કાચા ઘરોમાં રહે. છતાં આ બાઓમાંથી કેટલાકને તો આવકના દાખલાય 1.20 લાખથી વધુની આવકના પંચાયતે કાઢી આપેલા. ત્યારે કુંભાજી તો સામે ચાલીને કોઈ બાકી રહી ન જાય તેનો ખ્યાલ રાખે. આવા સરપંચને સલામ કરવાનું મન થાય.. 

બાકી કુંભાજી જેવા સરપંચોને સલામ ને જેઓ હજુ આ ભૂમિકામાં નથી આવ્યા તેમને ભગવાન સદબુદ્ધી આપે તેવી પ્રાર્થના…

Life has been challenging for Sarojben from Sabarkantha’s Piludra; her hardships make her look quite old compared to her actual age. Having lost her husband at a very young age, the responsibility of raising Rupal, her daughter, fell upon her. Sarojben works as a farm labor to earn a living and educate Rupal, who is studying in 9th grade.

Since the last few years, Sarojben has lost her vision, and because of financial constraints, she has avoided going for a medical checkup. 

The responsibility of running the household, looking after Sarojben, and earing for the two fell on Rupal. Initially, she would take leave but eventually dropped out of the school

Pilundra’s Alpaben introduced us to Sarojben and suggested we provide them with the monthly ration kit.

Sarojben should also receive a widow pension; strangely, this daily wage earning lady received an income certificate above Rs. 1.20 lacs; hence she could not qualify for the widow pension.

We have begun sending ration kits to Sarojben. Very soon, we shall take her to the doctor to examine her eye, and if her vision returns, we will bring Rupal to our hostel.

સાબરકાંઠાના પિલુદ્રામાં રહેતા સરોજબેનની ઉંમર બહુ મોટી નહીં પણ વર્ષોથી ઢસરડા કરવાના લીધે એ નાની ઉંમરેય મોટા લાગે. એમને એક દિકરી રૃપલ જે હાલ નવમુ ધોરણ ભણે. સરોજબેનના પતિ થોડા વર્ષો પહેલાં ગુજરી ગયા. સરોજબહેન ખેતમજૂરી કરે અને મા-દીકરીનું ગુજરાન ચાલે. 

પણ છેલ્લા કેટલાક વખતથી સરોજબેનને આંખે દેખાતુ બંધ થયું. આર્થિક સ્થિતિ નબળી એટલે આંખોની તપાસ કરાવવાનું પણ એમણે કર્યું નહીં.

 રૃપલ ભણે પણ માના આંખોના અજવાળા ઓલવાયા પછી ઘર ચલાવવા એણે કામે જવું પડે. જરૃર પડે માને પણ મદદરૃપ થવું પડે આમ નિશાળમાં રજાઓ પડવા માંડી. આખરે એણે ભણવાનું જ મુકી દીધું.

 આ સરોજબેનનો પરિચય અમને ગામમાં રહેતા અલપાબહેને કરાવ્યો. એમણે કહ્યું, આ પરિવારને દર મહિને રાશન આપો તો એમને ઘણો ટેકો થાય. 

વિધવા સહાય સરોજબેનને મળવી જોઈએ પણ એ પણ મળે નહીં. મજૂરી કરીને નભતા આ પરિવારને આવકનો દાખલો 1.20 લાખની આવકનો વાર્ષિક મળ્યો એટલે વિધવા સહાય ન મળે. 

સ્થિતિ સમજી અમે દર મહિને રાશન આપવાનું શરૃ કર્યું. સરોજબેનની આંખોની તપાસ કરાવવાનું પણ કરીશું. જો આંખો સાજી થાય તો રૃપલને અમારી હોસ્ટેલમાં ભણવા લઈ આવીશું. પણ આવા પરિવારોને મદદ કરી શકીએ છીએ એનો રાજીપો છે..અલપાબહેન અને અમારા કાર્યકર તોહીદનો આભાર. એમણે સરોજબહેનને શોધ્યા.

Minister Smt. Bhanuben Babariya and Respected  Shri Jagdishbhai Vishvakarma graced the ceremony.

No words can describe the anguish a homeless endures for not owning a house or having a permanent address! Since we work with the address less section of society, we comprehend that pain even better. And despite working for the welfare of these homeless families, Even we as an organization did not have a permanent address. Our journey began from the premises of Janpath, which later moved to the Sadvichar Parivar Campus. Incidentally, until recently we had never felt the need to have a permanent address

However, the current trend of exorbitant land prices makes it impossible for an organization like ours to purchase even a small piece of land, and we were confused about the way forward. The government agreed to offer us land at 50% cost at our request. Shri Chiragbhai, the revenue officer of Ahmedabad’s Bopal area marked out a nice piece of land for us. Respected Shri Bhagwandas Panchal (Kaka to all of us) provided continuous support to ensure the file moved quickly through various departments. Respected Shir Jagdishbhai Viswakarma, Minister for Small and Cottage Industries, Protocol helped a lot; he accompanied us to the department from where the file did not move. The respected Chief Minister and Respected C. R. Patil  Saheb provided immense support. Shri Patil Saheb initiated the entire process with a phone call to the District Collector of Ahmedabad, requesting him to allot a plot to VSSM.

Collector Shri Sandip Sangle played a crucial role; respected Awantikabahen, Shri Pankajbhai Joshi, Shri Modiya Saheb, Shri Damor Saheb, Dy. Collector Shri Sudhirbhai, Mamlatdar Shri Ronakbhai, and numerous officials helped us whenever required. Finally, due to these collective efforts, a government order for land was released, and allotment happened.

However, the 50% amount we were required to pay was also substantial. Respected Shri Krishnakant Mehta and Dr. Indira Mehta, our Dubai-based well-wishing donors, asserted the need for VSSM’s independent office from where we can easily carry out our activities. They offered to pay the entire payable amount to the government and decided to build Sanjiv Sadan in memory of their son Sanjiv who had succumbed to cancer at a very early age.

The Bhoomi-Pujan ceremony for Sanjiv Sadan was organised on March 12th 2023. Minister Smt. Bhanuben Babariya and Respected  Shri Jagdishbhai Vishvakarma graced the ceremony.

The notable aspect of the entire ceremony was the members of communities arriving with a fistful of soil and a brick from their front yard and showering us with the blessings to continue working for the welfare of others. Numerous friends and well-wishers also attended the ceremony.

We took the opportunity to honor  Respected Shri Krishnakant uncle and Indira auntie, along with Respected Shri Bhagwandas Panchal (kaka). Although none of them wished for their felicitation, it was only apt that we took the opportunity to express our gratitude. “If I have two rotis, and I need only one for my sustenance, I should be giving away the other to feed the hungry,”  Krishnakant uncle believes. This very humble and compassionate Mehta couple has spent only for the betterment of others. I am grateful for our paths to have crossed and for their faith and trust in us.

Around 2500 friends and well-wishers from across Gujarat remained present at the ceremony. Sanjiv Sadan, will be our permanent address to carry out our endeavors for the welfare of impoverished communities.

We are immensely grateful to the Government, Respected Shri Krishanakant Uncle, Indira Auntie, whose support has helped us have a permeant address.

And my gratitude to the well-wishers of VSSM whose support has helped us reach thousands of impoverished families.

પોતાનું સરનામુ ન હોવાની પીડા ભયંકર. વિચરતી જાતિઓ સાથે કાર્ય કરતા આ પીડા જાણે વધારે સમજાણી. જો કે વર્ષોથી આ સમુદાયોના કલ્યાણનું કાર્ય કરતા અમારી પાસે પણ પોતાનું સરનામુ નહીં. વર્ષો પહેલાં જનપથ ને પછી સદવિચાર પરિવારના પ્રાંગણમાં બેસીને અમે કાર્ય કરીએ. જો કે આ સમયગાળા દરમ્યાન ક્યારેય પોતાનું સરનામુ થાય એવી ઝંખના નહોતી સેવી. પણ સમય જતા સરનામાની જરૃરત ઊભી થઈ. 

પણ આજના સમયમાં જમીન ખરીદવી એ પણ એક સંસ્થાને બધુ બહુ મુશ્કેલ લાગે. શું કરવું એના મુૂંઝારા હતા. સરકારને વિનંતી કરી ને એમણે 50 ટકા રાહત દરે જમીન આપવાનું સ્વીકાર્યું. અમદાવાદના બોપલમાં અમને બોપલ તલાટી શ્રી ચિરાગભાઈએ સરસ પ્લોટ બતાવ્યો. જમીનની ફાઈલ ઝડપથી વિવિધ વિભાગોમાંથી ક્લીયર થાય તે માટે આદરણીય ભગવાનદાસ પંચાલ જેમને અમે કાકા કહીએ એ સતત સાથે રહ્યા. આદરણીય જગદીશભાઈ વિશ્વકર્મા માનનીય મંત્રી શ્રી લધુ અને કુટરી ઉદ્યોગ, પ્રોટોકોલ વગેરે એમણે ખુબ મદદ કરી. જ્યાં ફાઈલ અટકી ત્યાં એ સાથે આવ્યા. માનનીય મુખ્યમંત્રી શ્રી તેમજ આદરણીય સી.આર.પાટીલ સાહેબે પણ ખુબ મદદ કરી. અલબત ફાઈલની શરૃઆત જ પાટીલ સાહેબે કરાવી. એમણે જ કલેક્ટર શ્રીને પ્રથમ ફોન કરીને જમીન આપવા બાબતે વાત કરી. 

કલેક્ટર શ્રી સંદીપ સાંગલે એમની ભૂમિકા પણ મહત્વની રહી. આદરણીય અવંતીકાબહેન, શ્રી પંકજભાઈ જોષી, શ્રી મોડિયા સાહેબ, શ્રી ડામોર સાહેબ, ડે.કલેકટર શ્રી સુધીરભાઈ, મામલતદાર શ્રી રોનકભાઈ વગેરે જેવા ઘણા અધિકારીઓએ પણ જ્યાં જરૃર પડી મદદ કરી ને આખરે સરકારમાંથી જમીનનો હુકમ થયો ને જમીન ફળવાાઈ. 

પણ ફળવાયેલી જમીનની 50 ટકા રકમ ભરવાની હતી અને એ રકમ પણ ઘણી મોટી હતી. દુબઈમાં રહેતા આદરણીય ક્રિષ્ણકાંત મહેતા તેમજ ડો.ઈન્દિરા મહેતા આ કામમાં સાથે આવ્યા. એમણે કહ્યું, VSSMનું મુખ્ય કાર્યાલય હોવું જ જોઈએ અને હોય તો ત્યાંથી ગુજરાત અને ગુજરાત બહાર જ્યાં પણ કામ કરવું છે તે આરામથી કરી શકાય. 

બસ જમીનની સરકારને ચુકવવાની તમામ રકમ અંકલ આન્ટીએ ચુકવી. તેમના દીકરા સંજીવભાઈ જે 8 વર્ષની વયે ગંભીર બિમારીમાં મૃત્યુ પામ્યા તેમના નામે આ જમીન પર સંજીવ સદન બાંધવાનું નક્કી કર્યું. આ સંજીવ સદનનો ભૂમીપૂજન કાર્યક્રમ તા. 12મી માર્ચ 2023ના રોજ આયોજીત થયો. જેમાં માનનીય મંત્રી શ્રી ભાનુબહેન બાબરિયા અને આદરણીય શ્રી જગદીશભાઈ પંચાલ ખાસ ઉપસ્થિત રહ્યા. 

કાર્યક્રમમાં ઊડીને આંખે વળગે તેવી વાત સમુદાયના લોકો પોતાના આંગણાની ધુળ અને એક ઈંટ લઈને આવ્યા તે હતી. એક પવિત્ર ભાવના સાથે તેઓ આવ્યા ને આ સદનમાં બેસી અસંખ્ય જીવોાના કલ્યાણનું કાર્ય કરો તેવી શુભભાવના સમગ્ર ટીમને એમણે આપી.

સંસ્થા સાથે સંકળાયેલા ઘણા બધા સ્નેહીજનો પણ કાર્યક્રમમાં ખાસ પધાર્યા. 

કાર્યક્રમમાં આદરણીય શ્રી ક્રિષ્ણકાંત મહેતા તેમજ ડો. ઈન્દિરા આંટીનું સન્માન કરવામાં આવ્યું. સાથે આદરણીય ભગવાન દાસ પંચાલ (કાકા)નું પણ સન્માન કર્યું. જો કે સન્માનની ઝંખના આ ત્રણેય ને જરાય નહીં. ક્રિષ્ણકાંત અંકલ તો કહે, મારી પાસે બે રોટલી હોય અને એક રોટલીથી મારુ જીવન ચાલી જાય તો મારે બીજી રોટલી બીજા ભૂખ્યા જનને આપી દેવી જોઈએ. આવી ફીલોસોફીમાં માનનાર આ દંપતીને ઈશ્વરે જે આપ્યું તે એમણે વાપરી જાણ્યું. તેમના પ્રત્યે કૃતજ્ઞતા વ્યક્ત કરુ છું.

આખા ગુજરાતમાંથી 2500 જેટલા પ્રિયજનો ઉપસ્થિતિ રહ્યા.. સંજીવ સદન અમારુ સરનામુ જ્યાં બેસી તકવંચિતોના કામો થશે. 

સરકાર અને આદરણીય ક્રિષ્ણકાંત અંકલ, આન્ટીના અમે આભારી છીએ. એમની લાગણીના લીધે આ શક્ય બન્યું.. 

VSSM ને આ સ્તર સુધી પહોંચાડનાર સૌ સ્નેહીજનોનો આભાર…

“We always wanted to plant trees, but the fear of their survival deterred us from going forward. In the past, we have planted trees, but most of the saplings never made it. However, after your assurance, we planted 12000 trees on the premises of Lord Ram temple. This region is water-starved, and the groundwater tables are low and saline. We did not have a borewell either, but as they say, where there is a will, there is a way; the borewell we drilled had sweet water. Within two years, these trees will begin to give cool shade to the worshipers coming to the temple.”

Banaskantha’s Chaangda village community leaders talked about their wish to carry out a plantation there. However, since the plot of land adjacent to the Ram temple had always remained vacant, it got treated as a wasteland, with the villagers using it to dispose of their dead cattle. So the community decided to cover this wasteland into a green oasis. Consequently, with support from Rosy Blue India Private Limited, VSSM carried out the plantation at the selected site.

Before we initiated the plantation activities, the community cleaned the site and removed the wild invasive trees. After completion of the plantation, the community monitors the site, and 12000 trees are growing well under their care. Inspired by the success of the first plantation drive, the villagers have now decided to spare another plot of land near a temple for the second phase of the plantation.

We hope other villages show similar awareness and raise jungles of 25,000 to 30,000 trees. Only trees would help bring down the temperatures, bring rain, and reduce the occurrence of droughts and floods. Our efforts need to focus on turning the entire earth green again, and not just Banaskantha.

VSSM’s Naranbhai Raval, Maheshbhai Choudhry, and Maheshbhai work very hard to ensure that these plantation drives are executed as per their criteria.

The immense efforts of Arjanbhai and Dungarbhai  Patel, the two vriksh mitra of Chaangda, should be congratulated for their efforts in raising these trees. 

“અમાર ઝાડખા વાબ્બા’તા. પણ થોડી બીકેય લાગતી’તી. દર ચોમાસે ઝાડ વવાય ઘણા પણ બધા ઊગે નહીં એટલે. પણ તમે વિસવા આલ્યો. તે રાજારામભગવાના મંદિરની આ જગ્યામાં 12,000 થી વધારે ઝાડખા વાવી દીધા. અમાર ઓય પોણી નતું. ઝાડખા માટે અમાર બોર કરવાનો’તો. અમાર આ વિસ્તારમાં તળમાં મેઠા પોણી નહીં. પણ ભગવોને એહ પુરી તે બોરમાં પેલી વારકુ જ મેઠુ પોણી આયુ. એક બે વર્ષમાં ભગવોનના દર્શને આવનાર દર્શાનાર્થી બેહી હકે એવી સરસ  લીલોતરી ઓય થઈ જવાની..”

બનાસકાંઠાના થરાદના ચાંગડાકામના આગેવાનોએ આ કહ્યું. ભગવાન રાજારામના મંદિરની બાજુની અવાવરુ, આમ તો મરેલા ઢોર જ્યાં નાખી દેવામાં આવતા એ જગ્યામાં રોઝી બ્લુ ઈન્ડિયા પ્રા.લી.ની મદદથી VSSM એ વૃક્ષો વાવ્યા. ગામે આ જગ્યા વૃક્ષો વાવી ઉછેરવા આપી. એટલે આ શક્ય બન્યું. 

ગામે પાણીની વ્યવસ્થા કરી આપી સાથે જમીનની સફાઈ ખાસ તો ગાંડો બાવળ કાઢી આપ્યો. એ પછી અમે વૃક્ષો વાવ્યા. પણ ગામની દેખરેખ ઘણી. ગામ પણ જાગૃત એટલે વૃક્ષો સરસ ઉછરી રહ્યા છે. 12,000થી વધારે વૃક્ષોનો સરસ ઉછેર જોઈને ગામે મંદિર પાસેની અન્ય એક જગ્યામાં પણ આ ચોમાસે વૃક્ષો વાવવાની નેમ રાખી.

બસ દરેક ગામ ચાંગડાની જેમ જાગે ને પોતાના ગામમાં ઓછામાં ઓછા 25 થી 30 હજાર વૃક્ષોના જંગલો કરે.. આ થશે તો વાતાવારણમાં ઠંડક થશે, વરસાદ નિયમીત અને સારો આવશે. દુષ્કાળ, પૂરનું પ્રમાણ ઘટશે. તો માત્ર બનાસકાંઠો હરિયાળો નહીં આખી પૃથ્વી હરિયાળી કરવા મથીએ.. 

અમારા આ કાર્યમાં અમારા કાર્યકર નારણભાઈ રાવળ, મહેશભાઈ ચોધરી, મહેશભાઈ બોકાની મહેનત ઘણી. પણ સૌથી વધારે દેખરેખ વૃક્ષોની સાર સંભાળ રાખનાર વૃક્ષમિત્ર અરજણભાઈ પટેલ તેમજ ડુંગરાભાઈ પટેલની.. તમને બધાને પ્રણામ..

“Allotment of Ration Cards and that too BPL ration cards within such a short time is beyond our comprehension. It has taken us months and sometimes years of struggle to get our existing ration cards reissued upon splitting them.” Prahaladbhai Raval of Gandhinagar’s Lodra shared with great astonishment.

Ludra has a considerable population of Raval families who earn their living as menial labor. While some have pucca homes, others don’t, and many who do not even have a place to call home stay in rented properties. These individuals are enterprising but lack the capital to launch their independent ventures, and it is unaffordable to borrow money from private money lenders at a high-interest rate. We discussed these and many other aspects of their life during the meeting. Now that VSSM is with them, the families experienced a sense of relief. VSSM’s team member Rizwan has made great efforts to ensure the families receive their ration cards and other citizenry documents. We are grateful to the Mamlatdar of Mansa Shri  Vishalbhai Parmar and Additional Mamlatdar Shri Chiragbhai Shah for their promptness in issuing the ration cards. Shri Chiragbhai obliged our team member’s request and paid a visit to the settlement…

We are also grateful to the Public Supply Department of Mansa.

Incidentally, Shri Nimeshbhai Savla and Shilpaben, our well-wishing donors, traveled with us on that day and participated in this noble cause. Our best wishes to these families of Ludra.

 ‘આટલા જલદી રેશનકાર્ડ એ પણ બીપીએલ મળે એ કલ્પના બહારની વાત હતી પણ જુઓ આ બધું થયું. વિભાજીત રેશનકાર્ડ માટે પણ અમે ઘણા વખતથી મથતા પણ મેળ નહોતો પડતો.’

ગાંધીનગરના લોદ્રામાં રહેતા પ્રહલાદભાઈ રાવળે ભાઈએ આ કહ્યું. 

લોદ્રામાં રાવળ સમુદાયની વસતિ ઘણી મોટી. ઘણા છૂટક મજૂરી કરીને ગુજારો કરે. કેટલાક પાસે પાકા ઘર છે તો કેટલાક પાસે નથી. ઘણા પાસે રહેવા પોતાની જગ્યા નથી. ભાડાના મકાનમાં ઘણા રહે છે. ધંધો કરવાની સમજણ છે પણ પાસે મૂડી નથી. વ્યાજવા લાવે તો પોષાય નહીં. આવી ઘણી વાતો તેમની સાથે બેઠક કરી તેમાં તેમણે કરી. 

પણ હવે સૌને નિરાંત એ વાતે હતી કે VSSM એમની સાથે છે. કાર્યકર રીઝવાન એમના માટે ઘણું મથે આ રાશનકાર્ડ માટે પણ એણે જ ફોર્મ ભરીને પ્રયત્ન કરેલા.

માણસા મામલતદાર શ્રી વિશાલભાઈ પરમાર અને નાયબ મામલતદાર શ્રી ચિરાગ શાહનો ઘણો આભાર. આ બેઉની આ સમુદાય માટે ખુબ લાગણી એટલે આ કાર્ય ઝડપથી થયું.

ચિરાગભાઈ તો અમારા કાર્યકર રીઝવાનની લાગણી ધ્યાનમાં રાખીને વસાહતમાં પણ આવ્યા.

VSSM provides ration kit to hundreds of such needy elderly who are unable to work and feed for themselves

For an elder, either their daughter or son can be a caregiver. However, not all are lucky. Innumerable couples have no one to care for as they age, compelling them to continue working until the body has the strength to keep going. Life becomes a burden for such people who have no choice but to eagerly await their final journey.

And death, as we all know, arrives at its own will.

Many do not get the benefit of the elderly pension. Similarly,  the ration from PDS also remains a distant possibility as many need help to even walk up to the store.

“During such times, we just fill our hungry belly with a glass of water, if the neighbors are caring enough, they might come and give us leftovers,” shares Dudhima of Rajkot‘s Tramba village.

VSSM comes across hundreds of such needy elderly who are unable to work and fend for themselves. So it began providing ration kits or tiffin (to those who are incapable of cooking) to these elderlies in need of help. Within a couple of years, the number of elders we support has grown to 420. Each monthly ration kit costs Rs. 1400; while our donors have adopted many elders, the growing number of elders has us on a continuous lookout for new sponsors.

We also receive calls from numerous such elders in need from across Gujarat; while we can only reach some of them, we are trying our best to attend as many as possible.

ઘડપણની લાઠી…એ દીકરો કે દીકરી કોણ પણ હોઈ શકે.. પણ આવી લાઠી ન ધરાવતા કેટલાય મા-બાપ આ દુનિયામાં. કામ થાય ત્યાં સુધી કરે રાખે.. પણ પછી તો જીવતરનોય એમને ભાર લાગે. પરાણે ઘડપણ કાઢવાનું. ભગવાન આવીને ઝટ લઈ જાય એની લગભગ બધા કાગડોળે વાટ જુએ..

પણ મોત એમ શાનું આવે?

સરકારી પેન્શન કેટલાક ને મળે ને કેટલાકને ન મળે.. રાશનનું પણ એવું. ઘણા તો ચાલીને દુકાન સુધી ન પહોંચી શકે… એટલે રાશનેય ન મળે..

આવા માવતરોને ભૂખ્યા સુવુ ન પડે એ માટે રાશન આપવાનું ક્યાંક ટીફીન આપવાનું શરૃ કર્યું. હાલ ગુજરાતના વિવિધ ઠેકાણે વસતા 420 માવતરોને અમે રાશન આપીયે..

એક માવતરની કીટનો ખર્ચ 1400 રૃપિયા થાય. ઘણા માવતરોના પાલક અમને મળી ગયા છે ને ઘણાના અમે શોધીએ..

વળી ગુજરાતના ઠેકઠેકાણેથી ઘણા આવા નિરાધાર માવતરો ફોન થકી પોતાની યાતના પણ કહે…શું કહુ બધે પહોંચવું પણ મુશ્કેલ.. પણ ખેર થાય તે કરીએ..

Tarlaben Shah (I prefer calling her Ma) from Valod invited me to talk about my learnings and experiences at a study meet; obviously, I was going to grab this opportunity.

The occasion also promised to provide an opportunity to refresh the memories of the late Shri Babubhai Shah ( in whose memory the study meet was organized) for his support and help in enrolling the children of nomadic communities in various Ashram Shala’s across Gujarat.

The campus of Vedhchhi Pradesh Sewa Samiti at Valod is a sacred place for many like me; it ushers memories of extraordinary human beings like Naranbhai Desai and many more.

It is the place that inspired me to work for the welfare of sugarcane workers. South Gujarat is the region that has significantly contributed to shaping the work I do at present, and all the memories rushed back as I travelled to the area.

At 85 years, Tarlaben (Ma) is tremendously active (can put any of us at shame), even on social media. I meet her son Urvinbhai for the first time and meeting them all always brings so much exuberance and warmth, like meeting our own.

As it is always said, ‘we attract our tribe’ the nature of my work has made me part of a wonderful extended family.

Thank you, Ma, for calling me to Valod and giving me this memorable opportunity to talk/interact with the students, guests, and staff for a couple of hours.

તરલાબેન શાહ મને તો એમને માં કહેવાનું જ ગમે. એમનું કહેણ વાલોડથી આવ્યું. વાંચન શિબીરમાં અનુભવોની વાત કરવાનું. 

તક ઝડપી લીધી. આમ પણ જેના સ્મરણમાં આ શિબીર યોજાય તે સ્વ. બાબુભાઈ શાહે વિચરતી જાતિઓના કલ્યાણનું કાર્ય શરૃ કર્યું તે વખતે આ સમુદાયના બાળકોને વિવિધ આશ્રમશાળાઓમાં દાખલ કરવામાં ઘણી મદદ કરેલી. એટલે એ યાદો પણ તાજી થવાની.

વેડછી પ્રદેશ સેવા સમિતી – વાલોડનું પરીસર જ કેવું પવિત્ર. નારણભાઈ દેસાઈથી લઈને અન્ય કેટલાય મહાનુભાવોની યાદ આવી જાય. 

શેરડીકામદારોએ મને સેવાકાર્યો કરવા માટે પ્રેરી એમ હું ચોક્કસ કહીશ. એમ એક રીતે દક્ષીણ ગુજરાતનો ફાળો આજે જે કાર્યો કરી રહી છું તેમાં ઘણો.. વાલોડ જતા એ બધુ પાછુ તાદૃશ્ય થયું.

ખુબ વહાલા તરલાબહેન (માં) 85 વર્ષની વયે યુવાનોને શરમાવે એવા પ્રવૃત. એમને જોઈને જ મજા પડી જાય. સોસિયલ મિડીયામાં પણ એ જબરા એક્ટીવ. એમના દિકરા ઉર્વીનભાઈને પહેલીવાર મળી પણ મજા પડી. બહુ પોતિકા લાગે આ બધા જ.

સેવાકાર્યો સાથે સંકળાવાના લીધે એક નોખો પરિવાર મને મળ્યો. અલબત રચાઈ ગયો એમ કહુ તો ચાલે.. 

આભાર માં તમે મને વાલોડ તેડાવી એ માટે ને મને સળંગ બે કલાક વિદ્યાર્થીઓ તેમજ અન્ય મહેમાનો, ત્યાંના કર્મચારીઓ સાથે વાતો કરવાની મજા પડી.

“Saheb, I have heard government gives aid to needy individuals. I am destitute and have been staying in Vav for years, but I have received nothing. My neighbors take care of me, I cannot live without tea, and I have no money to buy tea. If I can get some money, I can at least have a cup of tea!”

This very humble Ba did not hold back from sharing her concerns before a government official. It was first time I had witnessed someone requesting government aid for tea. The atmosphere in the office became jovial on hearing this unique request from Ba. The officer in charge is also a very kind-hearted gentleman.

“We will make sure you begin to receive the pension,”  the officer ensured with a smile. “But in the meantime, take this, and if you run short, please come and take more from me until I am here!” he tells Ba while handing her Rs 1000 from his wallet.

The above episode occurred in Block Development Officer Shri Jay Goswami’s office in Banaskantha’s Vav. The communities who visit his office know him as a. very empathetic officer; hence, they feel a sense of right on him. 

I travel a lot across these villages and interact with the communities. People don’t like officials who act as Sahebs, but prefer to open up and share their heartfelt concerns with officers who blend with them easily. A proper leader/officer can identify the pulse of the people and become one of them.

Jaybhai is one of those rare officials who also makes a regular donation to VSSM.

Jaybhai made sure  Ba’s form for elderly pension was filled and called up VSSM’s Naranbhai to recommend sending a monthly ration kit to Ba under our Mavjat initiative. Incidentally, we were in the region then, so upon his invitation to see Ba in person, we reached his office.

Ba was feeling immensely grateful for the administrative promptness in resolving her issues. Jaybhai also offered Ba a chair, but she kept her distance.

It is always a pleasure to meet such officials; we wish our ear we want to Jaybhai all the very best, and may his good deeds and compassion take him to great heights.

“સાહેબ સરકાર ઘરડા માવીતરોન પૈસા આલ્.. પણ મન તો કોય મલતુ નહીં. મુ નિરાધાર સુ. ઓય વાવમાં વરસોથી રહુ. અતાર લગી હેડે જતું. મોણસો હાસવય ખરા પણ મન ચા વના નહીં ચાલતું, પણ ચા પીવા પૈસા નહીં. મન સા(સહાય) મલ તો ચા – બા પી હકુ…”

માજી શબ્દોની જરાય ચોરી વગર મનમાં જે હતું એ એક અધિકારી આગળ કહી રહ્યા હતા. વળી ચા માટે સરકારી સહાય માંગવા આવ્યા હોય એવો કિસ્સો મેય પહેલીવાર જોયો.. જરા રમૂજ પડે એવું હતું પણ પેટછુટી વાત એ જે અધિકારીને કહી રહ્યા હતા એ છે પાછા એકદમ ઋજુ હૃદયના.

અધિકારીએ વાત સાંભળી મર્માળુ હસતા કહ્યું. “તમને પેન્શન મળે એવું તો કરી જ દઉશું માડી. પણ આ લ્યો” એમ કહીને એમણે એમના પોકેટમાંથી હજાર કાઢીને બાને ચા માટે આપ્યા. ને પાછુ કહી દીધું, “ખુટે તો હું જ્યાં હુદી અહીંયા છુ ન્યાં લગી મારી પાસેથી લઈ જવા..”

વાત છે બનાસકાંઠાના વાવની.. તાલુકા વિકાસ અધિકારી તરીકે જય ગોસ્વામી ત્યાં ફરજ બજાવે.. એકદમ લાગણીવાળા વ્યક્તિ.. એટલે જ કચેરીમાં આમ પોતાની મૂંઝવણ સાથે થોડા હકપૂર્વક લોકો આવી શકે. 

હું ગામોમાં ખુબ ફરુ.. લોકો સાથે વાતો ઘણી થાય. દરેક વ્યક્તિને અધિકારી કે નેતા પોતાના જેવા એમનામાં ભળી જાય એવા ગમે.. પેલા સાહેબ થઈને આવે એ એમને બહુ રૃચતા નથી.. પ્રજાની નાડી પારખી પ્રજાની વચ્ચે એમનામય થઈ જાય એ સાચ્ચો અધિકારી કે નેતા..

જયભાઈ તો અમને નિયમીત નાનુ મોટુ અનુદાન પણ મોકલે.. આવા અધિકારી બહુ જુજ…

આ માડી કચેરીમાં આવ્યા એમણે વૃદ્ધ પેન્શનનું ફોર્મ તો ભરાવ્યું. સાથે અમારા એ વિસ્તારના કાર્યકર નારણભાઈને ફોન કરીને. આ બાને તમે તમારા માવજત કાર્યક્રમ અંતર્ગત દર મહિને રાશકીટ આપો તો એમને સારુ રહે એવું કહેતા ફોન પણ કર્યો. યોગાનુયોગ એ વખતે એમના જ વિસ્તારમાં જ અમે ફરી રહ્યા હતા. એમણે બાને રૃબરૃ મળવા નિમંત્રણ આપ્યું ને અમે કચેરીએ પહોંચ્યા.

બા તો આવું ચપટીમાં કામ થાય એ વાતથી જ ધન્યતા અનુભવતા હતા. જયભાઈએ આગ્રહ કર્યો કે માડી ખુરશીમાં બેસો પણ એમણે એક જુદો મલાજો રાખ્યો…

આવા અધિકારીઓને જોઈને રાજી થવાય… પ્રિય જયભાઈ કુદરત તમારા હસ્તે ઘણા શુભકાર્યો કરાવે ને પ્રજાલક્ષી કાર્યોમાં તમે એક ઊંચાઈ પર પહોંચો તેવી શુભભાવના…
