 Trees, Mutheda’s Natha Ba compares them with children and calls them Baltaru!!

Just as it is challenging to raise a child without a mother similarly, it is difficult to raise trees without caring for them.

1000 trees were planted in Golvi, 810 of them are a year old now. Here, the role of a mother or a friend was performed by Dharmabhai and Amrabhai. The two of them together nurtured and raised these trees beautifully.

During my recent visit to Golvi, I spotted a bird’s nest on one of the trees of these woods we are birthing. My heart leapt with joy at the sight of it. All the efforts have been worth it, I felt.

This year too we are planning to undertake plantation at another spot in Golvi. The sarpanch of the village Babubhai has installed a drip irrigation system for watering these saplings. Our Naran has been looking over all these efforts.

It is time all of us wake up to the environmental emergency we are facing, do our bit and make the earth green again.

                    વૃક્ષ… મુડેઠાના નાથા બા એને બાલતરુ કે..

બાળકનો ઉછેર મા વગર શક્ય નથી એમ તરુ, છોડનો ઉછેર પણ મા વગર કેમ થાય?

ગોલવીમાં અમે 1000 ઉપરાંત તરુ વાવ્યા જેમાંથી 810 વરસના થઈ ગયા. વૃક્ષમિત્ર કે વૃક્ષની મા ક્યો એ ધર્માભાઈ અને એમની સાથે અમરાભાઈ પણ. બેયે મળીને સરસ ઝાડ ઉછેર્યા.

હું ગોલવી ગઈ ત્યારે એક ઝાડમાં પક્ષીએ માળો મુકેલો જોયો.

જીવ રાજી થયો, વાવેલું સાર્થક થયું.

આ વર્ષે ગોલવીની જ બીજી એક જગ્યાએ બીજા તરુ વાવવાનું આયોજન છે.

સરપંચ બાબુભાઈએ વૃક્ષો માટે ટપક પદ્ધતિથી પાણી આપવાની સરસ વ્યવસ્થા કરી આપી.

કાર્યકર નારણની સતત દેખરેખ..

સૌ જાગે અને ઝાડ વાવે.. ધરતી આપણી મા એની શોભા અને શણગાર આ ઝાડ, પશુ પક્ષીઓ પતંગિયા, મધમાખી ટૂંકમાં તમામ જીવ.. આપણી માને આ શણગાર જે જાણે અજાણે છીનવ્યો છે એ પરત આપીએ..

In 2019, as a part of our efforts to make Banaskantha green again, we undertook tree plantation drive in villages that agreed to the preconditions for our plantation initiative.

Recently, I had to the opportunity to visit 3 such villages; Golvi, Diyodar and Makhanu. We believe,  equally important to planting the trees is to ensure that the planted saplings are nurtured and looked after. Hence, we had a ‘Vruksh-Mitr’ appointed in the villages where the tree plantation drive was executed. These appointees were responsible to look after the planted trees, they were paid a remuneration that was shared equally by VSSM and community.

Today, as I visited tree-plantation site, it was evident that  ‘Vruksh-Mitr’ Narsinhbhai, Dharmabhai and Bachubhai had worked hard. Golvi and Makhanu  villages have raised more than 850 trees each. While in Diyodar, 400 trees have been raised at the crematorium for Raval community.

VSSM Naran has worked very hard to ensure this initiative is implemented well. Golvi and Makhanu leadership showed tremendous cooperation. It is because of their efforts that seem to have had this impact. Whereas,  youth from  Raval community worked had to ensure that trees are planted and raised well at the crematorium site.

As monsoon approaches, we hope more villages from Banaskantha decide to join the tree plantation drive this year, we hope the number of villages committing to make their villages free from the rise and spread of prosopis juliflora/gando baval grows rapidly…..

જે ગામોએ શરતો માન્ય રાખી એવાં ગામોમાંના ગોલવી, દિયોદર અને મખાણુ ગામની મુલાકાત લીધી.

વૃક્ષારોપણમાં સૌથી અગત્યનું છે વૃક્ષો વાવ્યા પછી તેની માવજત નું કામ. આ માટે અમે ગામની ભાગીદારીથી વૃક્ષમિત્રોની પસંદગી કરી. આ વૃક્ષમિત્ર ઝાડ ની માવજત નું કામ કરે. જેમને મહેનતાણામાં અડધું મહેનતાણું ગામલોકો આપે અને અડધું VSSM માંથી મળે.

આજે મુલાકાત લીધેલા આ ત્રણેય ગામોમાં જ્યાં વૃક્ષારોપણ કર્યું છે તે સાઇટ પરના ત્રણેય વૃક્ષ મિત્રો નરસિંહભાઈ, ધરમાભાઈ અને બચુભાઈએ ખુબ મહેનત કરી છે.

ગોલવી અને મખાણુમાં તો સાડા આઠસો, આઠસો જેટલા વૃક્ષ ઉછેર્યા છે. જ્યારે દિયોદરમાં રાવળ સમાજની સ્મશાનભૂમિમાં ચારસો જેટલા વૃક્ષ થયા છે.

કાર્યકર નારણની આ બાબતે ઘણી મહેનત રહી.. તો ગોલવી અને મખાનું સરપંચે પણ ખૂબ સહયોગ કર્યો. અલબત્ત એમની ભાવના હતી માટે જ આ કામો થયા. તો રાવળ સમાજની સ્મશાન ભૂમિ માટે રાવળ યુવાનોની મહેનતને સલામ..

2020ના ચોમાસામાં બનાસકાંઠાના વધારે ગામો આ કાર્યક્રમમાં જોડાયા અને પોતાના ગામની સાથે બનાસકાંઠાને હરિયાળો કરવાનું સ્વપ્ન જુએ એમ ઈચ્છિયે.

Mittal Patel meets Laluma at her threshold

Lalu Ma stays on her own in Banaskantha’s Diyodar.  Recently, I was at her doorstep, to meet and inquire about her well-being. Watching me at her threshold, she removes her foot-ware before approaching to greet me.

“Why did you remove your chappal?” I inquired.

“Ben, I have nothing to offer as I welcome you into my home, I can at least do this for you!” Lalu Maa replied in all humility.

I convinced her to wear her chappals.

Lalu Maa’s husband died a few years ago, their daughter is married and stays at her marital home. She continued to work and earn her daily living until her body allowed her to do so. Eventually, as age progressed she became dependent on others for her food and meals.

The generous support of our dear Bhanuben Shah and Estate of Late Bomi Sorabji Bulsara has enabled us to provide daily meals to such dependent elderly who otherwise do not have a

family to care for them or feed them. VSSM is trying to give these lonely seniors a dignified life in their sunset years. We are extremely grateful to all our well-wishing donors for their persistent support and assistance.

Lalu Maa wishes to have a pucca house with a decent roof. We are trying to help her accomplish that. Our Naran and Ishwar take really good care of Lalu Maa. It is this hardworking team that allows VSSM to realise its goals.

દિયોદરમાં રહેતા લાલુ મા ના ખબર અંતર પુછવા જવાનું થયું. મને એમના આંગણે ઊભેલી જોઈ એટલે એમણે પગમાંથી ચંપલ કાઢ્યા અને પછી મારી પાસે આવ્યા. મે પુછ્યું,

‘મા ચંપલ કેમે કાઢ્યા? તાપ કેવો છે પગ નથી બળતા?’

એમણે કહ્યું,

‘તમારી હું મનવોર કરુ, બીજુ કશું તો પાહેણ સે નઈ એટલે આ ચંપલ કાઢી ન…’

આવું ન કરવા મા ને સમજાવ્યું.

નિરાધાર લાલુ મા ના પતિ ગુજરી ગયા ને દીકરીઓ સાસરે ચાલી ગઈ.

મજૂરી થતી ત્યાં સુધી કરી પછી કોઈ આપે અને એ ખાય એવી દશામાં એ પહોંચી ગયા.

આવા માવતર કે જેમની સંભાળ રાખનાર કોઈ નથી એમને દર મહિને રાશન આપવાનું અમારા સ્નેહીજન ભાનુબહેન શાહ અને Estate of Late Bomi Sorabji Bulsara ના આર્થિક સહયોગથી VSSM કરે.

ઢગલો આશિર્વાદ આ માવતરોના આ કાર્યમાં મદદ કરનાર સૌને મળશે..

જેમની દેખભાળ કરનાર કોઈ નથી એવા માવતરોનો જીવનનો છેલ્લો તબક્કો નિરાંતમાં જાય એવી અમે કોશીશ કરીએ છીએ.. મદદ કરનાર બંને પ્રિયજનો પ્રત્યે કૃતજ્ઞતા વ્યક્ત કરુ છુ..

લાલુ માની ઈચ્છા પોતાનું પાકુ ઘર હોય એવી છે એ માટે અમે કોશીશ કરી રહ્યા છીએ..

To understand the kind of  progress and change selfless leaders at the realm can bring in, one should  pay a  visit Tharad’s Aasodar village. 

There have been some vested interest groups brewing up after we decided to link up our lake deepening works with Sujalam Suflam scheme by the government. A large number of VSSM well-wishers are donating for this initiative, we felt the government support will reduce the pressure on donations. 

Never has anyone asked for any favours in return or money from us in the past. However, when leadership in some villages got the sense that we will be working in partnership with the government “what is in for us?” they asked without any qualms. 

This attitude brought in shock and sadness. 

 Amidst this, Padmabhai from Asodar came forward, called in the village and told them firmly that the conservation efforts were for our benefit and not the organisation. VSSM is not gaining any financial rewards to form this work. “We have to bring in the tractors,” he shouted and everyone listened to him. 

 I was thrilled at the sight of countless tractors lined up at the site when I reached Asodar. As seen in the image, Padmabhai and Lalabhai met me at the banks of the lake. And all this is the result of the tenacious efforts Shardaben and Naran have poured in. 

નિસ્વાર્થ માણસો જ્યાં બેઠા હોય ત્યાં કાર્યો કેવા રૃડા થાય એનું ઉદાહરણ થરાદનું આસોદર ગામ

સરકારની સુજલામ સુફલામ યોજના અને સંસ્થા સાથે સંકળાયેલા સ્નેહીજનોની મદદથી તળાવ ગાળવાનું અમે નક્કી કર્યું કે, ગામોમાં રહેતા કેટલાકના સ્વાર્થ જાગ્રત થયા.

VSSM દ્વારા જળસંચયના કામો થતા એમાં કોઈ દિવસ કોઈએ અમારી પાસે પૈસોય માંગ્યો નહીં. પણ અમુક ગામોમાં જેવી ખબર પડી કે આ વખતે તળાવો સરકારની સહભાગીતાથી કરવાના છીએ એટલે તુરત બર્શમ થઈને અમારુ શું? એવું કેટલાકે કહ્યું.

દુઃખ થાય આવું સાંભળીએ ત્યારે..

ખેર આવામાં આસોદરમાં રહેતા પદમાભાઈ જેવા માણસો આગળ આવ્યા જેમણે આખા ગામને એક કર્યું અને આ કામ તો આપણા હીતનું છે. સંસ્થાનો આમાં કોઈ સવારથ નથી. આપણે ટ્રેક્ટર આપવા પડશે એવું મોટી બૂમ પાડી એમણે કહ્યું ને ગામે એમની વાત માન્ય રાખી.

હું આસોદર પહોંચી તો અધધધ કહી શકાય એટલા ટ્રેક્ટર જોઈને જ મજા પડી. પદમાભાઈ અને લાલાભાઈ તળાવની પાળે મને મળ્યા. જે ફોટોમાં જોઈ શકાય છે..

About Lavana

Progress and development of any village depend on the attitude and sensitivity of its leadership, especially the Sarpanch. 

The participatory water management works have allowed me to meet and interact with numerous Sarpanchs, while some sarpanches portrayed appalling attitude there was Sarpanch like that of Lavana who assured there was hope for a better future. 

Shri Ramabhai Rajput is a proactive sarpanch of Lavana. Equally enthusiastic is Shri T. P Rajput, a BJP leader from Banaskantha. I happened to meet both these selfless humans recently while I was in the region to monitor the lake deepening works and evaluate the places identified for tree plantation program for this year. There is not a single widow or dependent in the village who has not received the benefits of appropriate Government schemes. Ramabhai has ensured that their forms are filled and applications processed to positive conclusions.

Shri T. P. Rajput very rightly said, “Ben, when it comes to the progress of a village we have to put aside all our numerous differences including the political ones!!”  

 The village has a functional library where youth prepare for various competitive examinations. 

When the reins of village administration are in hands of an understanding individual who also has the required cooperation of a regional leader like T. P. Rajput, Lavana sure is on the path of progress. 

Lavana is one of the 25 villages we plan to select to develop them as model villages. 

 Our Naran has been successful in establishing VSSM’s correct image, he works extremely hard for the development of poor and marginalised. Along with Naran is our Chirag who even under blazing sun monitors the works under progress. As I always claim, it is a blessing to have such a hard-working team. 

I am grateful to Lavana Sarpanch Ramabhai and Shri T. P Rajput for hosting me in their village. Both these gentlemen aspire not just for the economic progress of their region but also to make the region water-rich and green once again. Hope the farmers of the region decide to join hands to make these dreams a reality.

 વાત લવાણાની..

ગામનો વિકાસ સરપંચ કેવી લાગણીવાળા આમ તો લાગણીવાળા કરતાં વૃતિવાળા છે એના ઉપર આધારીત..

વિચરતી જાતિઓ સાથેના તેમજ જળસંચયના કાર્યો દરમ્યાન ઘણા ગામોના સરપંચોને મળવાનું થાય જેમાં કેટલાકની વૃતિને જોઈને ભારે દુઃખ થાય તો ક્યાંક લવાણા ગામના સરપંચ જેવા ને જોઈને દેશ પ્રગતિ કરી શકશેનો ભરોષો થાય.

લવાણાના સરપંચ રામાભાઈ રાજપૂજ અને એમના જેવા જ ઉત્સાહી ટી.પી. રાજપૂત જેઓ બનાસકાંઠા જિલ્લાના ભાજપના અગ્રણી..

આ બેય પરગજુ માણસોને મળવાનું થયું. લવાણાનું તળાવ સરકાર તેમજ સંસ્થા સાથે સંકળાયેલા પ્રિયજનની મદદથી ખોદી રહ્યા છીએ એ જોવા તેમજ આ ચોમાસે ગામની કેટલીક જગ્યામાં VSSM અને ગામની ભાગીદારીથી વૃક્ષારોપણ કરવું છે તે જોવા જવાનું થયું.

ગામમાં એક પણ વિધવા કે નિરાધાર વ્યક્તિ એવા નથી કે જેમને સરકારની મદદ ન મળતી હોય. આ માટે સરપંચે પોતે સામે ચાલીને આવા વ્યક્તિઓની અરજીઓ કરાવેલી અને ઠેઠ પરિણામ સુધી કાર્યને પહોંચાડ્યું.

ટી.પી. રાજપુતે તો કહ્યું, બેન ગામના વિકાસના કામોમાં અન્ય તમામ ભેદ એ પછી રાજકીય હોય કે અન્ય એ બધાયે બાજુમાં મૂકીને વિચારવાનું..

ગામમાં એક પુસ્તકાલય ચાલે જેમાં ગામના યુવાનો સ્પર્ધાત્મક પરિક્ષાની તૈયારી કરે.

સમજદાર વ્યક્તિઓના હાથમાં ગામની સત્તા હોય અને ટીપી રાજપૂજ જેવા અગ્રણીઓનો સહયોગ હોય તો લવાણાની પ્રગતિ ઝડપથી થવાની જ.

બનાસકાંઠામાં 25 ગામો પસંદ કરવા છે જેને આદર્શ બનાવવા છે લવાણા એમાંનું એક છે.

કાર્યકર નારણે આ વિસ્તારમાં VSSMની સાચી ઓળખને પ્રસ્થાપીત કરી છે. ગ્રામ વિકાસ અને વંચિતો માટે કંઈક કરી છૂટવાની તેની ભાવના જબરજસ્ત છે.

અમારા કાર્યકર ચીરાગ તળાવના કામોમાં ખરા તડકામાં નારણ સાથે ખભેખભા મીલાવી દોડી રહ્યા છે. આવી સુંદર ટીમ સાથે હોવી એ નસીબની વાત છે.

લવાણા સરપંચ અને જાગૃત આગેવાન ટી.પી. રાજપૂતે પોતાના ગામમાં આવકાર આપ્યો, સત્કાર કર્યો એ માટે આભારી છું.

આ બેય પ્રગતીશીલ વ્યક્તિઓનું સ્વપ્ન લવાણાની સાથે સાથે પોતાના પ્રદેશને પાણીવાળો કરવા માટેનું છે..આ વિસ્તારના ખેડૂતો સાથે આવે તો આ બધુયે શક્ય…

Mittal Patel talks about Water Management

“Ben, please take up the lake deepening works at our village, we will extend our full cooperation…”

 Shri Arjunbhai Joshi, Sarpanch of Banaskantha’s Khorda village in Tharad block delivered what he had promised.

 The excavated soil from most of the lakes in Banaskantha is unusable. The locals call it Refdo, this soil cannot be used in farms. Hence, VSSM has this pre-condition that requires the villagers to ferry out the excavated soil and also make a small contribution to the maintenance of the lake. We were worried about how all of these would be achieved in Khorda however, Sarpanch Shri Arjunbhai ensured we need to worry under his rein. Being a leader he is, it was obvious the villagers would support. 

Each house sent its contribution, tractors lined up and JCB was provided by us. And the work began.

Under Government’s Sujalam Sufalam Scheme a work order of Rs. 3.90 lacs had been issued of which 60% is aided by the government bringing the amount to 2.34 lacs for this lake. This amount does not include cleaning and other expenses hence the amount is deficient to an extent. Apart from government’s assistance VSSM poured in Rs. 2.34 lacs (the work is still underway) we expect just the excavation expenditure to cross Rs. 5 lacs.

Hence, it is crucial everyone pitches in and makes these kinds of work a collective effort. The villagers, government and VSSM together are responsible for giving the community lake of Khorda a new life. It is all thanks to Sarpanch Arjunbhai’s vision. This community has acted before it is too late, have you?

બનાસકાંઠાના થરાદના ખોરડાગામના સરપંચ શ્રી અર્જુનભાઈ જોષીએ આ કહ્યું અને કહ્યું એ પાળીને બતાવ્યું..

Ongoing lake deepening work

બનાસકાંઠાના ઘણા વિસ્તારમાં તળાવમાંથી ફળદ્રપ માટી નીકળે નહીં. સ્થાનીકભાષામાં જેને રેફડો કહેવાય એ નીકળે જેનો ઉપયોગ ખેતરમાં ન થાય.

અમે તળાવ ગાળીએ એમાં પહેલી શરત માટી ગામે ઉપાડવાની અને શક્ય હોય તો નાનો ફાળો પણ ભેગો કરવાનો. ખોરડામાં આ બધુ કેમ થશે એવી ચિંતા હતી પણ અર્જુનભાઈ જેવા ઉત્સાહી સરપંચ જ્યાં હોય ત્યાં ગામ સાથે કેમ ના આવે?

ગામે માટી ઉપાડવા માટે માતબર ફાળો ઘર દીઠ ભેગો કર્યો અને ભાડેથી ટ્રેક્ટર મુક્યા અને જેસીબી અમે મુક્યું.

સરકારે પણ સુજલામ સુફલામ યોજના અંતર્ગત આ તળાવને ઊંડું કરવા 3.90 હજારનો વર્ક ઓર્ડર આપ્યો જેમાંની 60 ટકા રકમ સરકાર આપે. જે મુજબ 2.34 લાખની મદદ મળે. આ રકમમાં તળાવની સફાઈ અને અન્ય નથી આવતું આથી રકમ ઓછી પણ મળે. સરકારના ફાળા ઉપરાંત VSSM દ્વારા 2.75 અથવા જરૃરિયાત મુજબની રકમ જોડવામાં આવી. (જો કે

હજુ કામ ચાલુ છે. લગભગ પાંચ લાખ ઉપરાંત ફક્ત ખોદાઈ પાછળ ખર્ચ થશે)

ટૂંકમાં ગામ, સરકાર અને સંસ્થાની મદદથી સુંદર મજાનું કામ ખોરડાગામના તળાવમાં થયું.

પાણી પહેલાં પાળ બાંધવાનું ખોરડા સરપંચે તો કર્યું પણ તમે કર્યુ?

ગામ સાથે બેઠક થઈ તે વેળાનો ફોટો, અર્જુનભાઈનો સરસ વિડીયો.. તળાવ ખોદાઈ રહ્યું હતું તે વેળાના ફોટો.. જોકે હજુ થોડું કામ બાકી છે. એ ઝટ પૂર્ણ કરીશું

Once while I was there the village sarpanch came to meet me and speak about deepening of the village lake in Kakar. We agreed and deepened one of the lakes. Fortunately, soon after the lake was deepened it got filled with the waters from Narmada. The lake did remain filled with water for a long time, resulting in the rising of the groundwater tables. The villagers could comprehend the benefit of this effort. Now they have come up with a request of deepening the second lake in the village.

The lake we were shown was almost non-existent. Looked more of a puddle than a lake. But the village map and official documents did mention that it was a lake.

It was decided to deepen the lake according to VSSM’s protocol. The excavated mud had to be lifted by the community. The JCB expenses are supported by donations made by VSSM’s well-wishers. There was government support too. As seen in the pictures, the work has begun.

Watching the neatly lined up tractors waiting for their turn to be filled up with soil does spark a sense of cheer within, not long ago there was a time when no one was willing to initiate the water conservation works in their village. It should be noted that the topsoil of the lake is useless and villagers are not willing to allow the tractors to be unloaded near their farms.

As a community, we have forgotten to take care of our water resources. We thought it was ok to keep sink borewells and keep drawing water from underneath. It might have been the only option but to be able to continue taking water from the ground we do need to replenish it. The lakes were crucial for the health of our underground reservoirs. Hope we understand the need to replenish and recharge our groundwater resources or else we should be prepared for worst times.

કાકરગામમાં ફૂલવાદી પરીવારોના વસવાટના લીધે અવાર નવાર ગામમાં જવાનું થાય..

ગામનો ફૂલવાદીઓ માથે મીઠો હાથ..

એક દિવસ ગામના સરપંચે આવીને તમે તળાવો ઊંડા કરવાનું કામ કરો તે અમારા ગામનું તળાવ પણ ઊંડુ કરોની વાત કરી. અમે ગામતળાવ ઊંડુ કર્યું. નસીબ સારા તે આ તળાવ ગળાયા પછી નર્મદાનું પાણી એમાં નંખાયું. પાણી સતત ભરાયા રહેવાના કારણે ગામના પાણીના તળ ઉપર આવ્યા. લોકોને ફાયદો દેખાયો..

હવે વાત આવી ગામમાં આવેલા બીજા તળાવને ગાળવાની..

ગામે એ તળાવ બતાવ્યું પણ સરકારી કાગળ પર તળાવ બાકી તળાવ જેવું હતું જ નહીં. ખાબોચિયું જ જણાય..

અમે તળાવ ગળાવવાનું નક્કી કર્યું અને માટી ઉપાડવાની શરત ગામે કબૂલ રાખી..

સરકારના સૂજલામ સુફલામ અભિયાનમાં અંતર્ગત લોકભાગીદારી થકી આ તળાવ ઊંડુ કરવાનું નક્કી કર્યું. સરકારનો ફાળો ઉપરાંત સંસ્થા સાથે સંકળાયેલા શુભેચ્છકોએ પણ આર્થિક મદદ કરી અને તળાવ ગાળવાનું શરૃ કર્યું.. જે ફોટોમાં દેખાય છે..

એક વખત હતો તળાવ ગળાવવા કોઈ રાજી નહોતું.. આવામાં માટી ઉપાડવાની વાત તો ક્યાં આવે..

આજે માટી માટે ટ્રેક્ટરની લાઈનો જોવું ત્યારે રાજી થવાય છે.. (આ વિસ્તારમાં તળાવમાં ફળદ્રુપ માટી મોટાભાગે નથી નીકળતી સ્થાનીક ભાષામાં રેફડો કહેવાય એ નીકળે)

તળાવોની જાળવણી કરવાનું આપણે ભૂલ્યા છીએ.. બોરવેલનું શરણું આપણે લીધુ છે સંજોગો મુજબ બોરવેલ જરૃરી હતા. પણ બોરવેલમાં પાણી આવે એ માટે પણ તળાવો ગળાય એ જરૃરી. પાણી તળાવો થકી જ ભૂગર્ભમાં ઊતરશે અને તળ રીચાર્જ થશે…

દરેક ગામ પાણીની મહત્તા સમજે નહીં તો આવનારો વખત વધારે કપરો આવશે.

છેલ્લી તસ્વીર પહેલા ખોદાવામા એ તળાવની છે. જયા નર્મદાનુ પાણી ભરવામા આવ્યુ હતુ.

The news around the Coronavirus has roared so much for all these days that even whilst we are at the peak of summer there is no news on water shortages yet. It looks like we have forgotten about this crisis looming at a distance. Contained within the boundaries of their home, the media too has missed noticing it. Otherwise, during normal times around this period, half the news leading dailies carry are on the water scarcities and crisis.

Monsoon is just a month away. If we do not gear up and make plans for conserving the rainwater we are signing up for some grave living conditions. Hence, it is important to act before it is too late.

Thus, with the support of our well-wishing donors and participation from the local community, we began the lake deepening works in Banaskantha under Sujlam Sufalam Scheme by government. Deepda, Khorda, Lavana, Aakoli, Indramana, Dhrechana, Makhanu are the villages where the works have begun.

I urge you all to gear up and act to retain the waters that fall from the sky in your village and your farms by repairing the traditional water sources…

કોરોનાની બૂમ એવડી મોટી હતી કે,

બળબળતો મે મહિનો આવી ગયો તોય આપણે પાણીની બૂમો ના પાડી.

બોલ ભૂલી જ ગયા. મૂળ તો ઘરમાં હતા એટલે ને ક્યાંક આ વખતે મિડીયાનું પણ આના ઉપર વધુ ધ્યાન નથી ગયું.

બાકી આ સમયે તો છાપામાં પણ પચાસ ટકા ખબરો પાણી નથી ની જ છપાય..

ચોમાસું બેસવામાં હવે મહિનો વાર છે..

વરસાદ વરસે અને અનું પાણી સંગ્રહવાનું નહીં કરીએ તો ભવિષ્યમાં બીજી તકલીફો મો વકાસીને ઊભી થઈ જશે..

એટલે પાણી પહેલાં પાળ બાંધીએ..

અમે બનાસકાંઠામાં અમારા પ્રિયજનોની મદદથી, સરકારની સુજલામ સુફલામ યોજનાની તેમજ ગામલોકોની ભાગીદારીથી તળાવ ગાળવાનું આરંભી દીધું છે..

દીપડા, ખોરડા, લવાણા, આકોલી, ઈન્દ્રમણા, ધ્રેચાણા, મખાણુંમાં તળાવોના કામ ચાલુ કરી દીધા છે.

તમે પણ સજ્જ થાવ અને ગામનું પાણી ગામમાં અને સીમનું સીમમાં એ ભાવ સાથે આપણા પરંપરાગત જલસ્ત્રોતો સરખા કરવાનું કરો…

Corona, at least for now,  has changed the way we function socially. 

The restrictions on public meetings and gatherings, fetes and celebrations are a new normal. The funerals too do not allow gathering of more than a few individuals.

 The livelihoods of folk artists from the nomadic communities who earn their living through their performances have been impacted as a result of these restrictions. The Bhavaiya, the Nats attract crowds whenever they host performances. The current situation cannot allow gatherings of this magnitude. I began receiving calls from individuals of Bhavaiya, Nat and Turi communities.

“Ben, we cannot step out. Summers are our season for performing, it is when we have our performances in the villages. Instead of performing, we are required to stay at home for our safety. How will we survive if we have to stay at home?” Kanubhai Bhavaia (Vyas) from Bala shared his turmoil. “We have no inheritance, we have no land handed over to us by our ancestors. Government has given relief packages to farmers, what about us, can’t they do something for us?” he continued.

Kanubhia is right. This needed to be brought to the government’s attention and I have done that. It would be great if folk artists were given some kind of assistance from the government.

કોરોનાએ સમાજિક વ્યવહારની પરિભાષા બદલી નાખી..

જાહેર સમારંભો, મેળાવડા બધુ જ બંધ થઈ ગયું. એ એટલે સુધી કે આપણું પ્રિયજન આ દુનિયામાંથી જાય ત્યારે એને વળાવવા પણ 15-20 થી વધુ સંખ્યામાં ન જઈ શકીએ..

આવામાં મનોરંજનના પરંપરાગત માધ્યમો થકી પેટિયું રળનાર કલાકારોની દશા માઠી થઈ છે.

ભવાઈ કે અંગકસરતના ખેલ જ્યાં થાય ત્યાં માણસો ભેગા થાય. જે હાલની સ્થિતિમાં શક્ય નથી..

ભવાયા, નટ અને તુરી સમાજના આવા કલાકારોના ફોન આવ્યા. બાળાના કનુભાઈ ભવાયા(વ્યાસે) કહ્યું,

‘બેન ક્યાંય બારા નીહરાતું નથી. ઉનાળો અમારી સીઝન કેહવાય. રાતના ગામોમાં જઈને ભવાઈ ભજવતા એની જગ્યાએ સુરક્ષીત રહેવા ઘરમાં છીએ.. પણ આમ ઘરમાં બેઠે બેઠે જીવાશે કેમના?

અમારા બાપ દાદા પાસે જમી – જાગીર નથી.. સરકાર ખેડૂતો હાટુ રાહત પેકેજ જાહેર કરે એમ અમારી હાટુ નો કરી હકે?’

કનુભાઈની વાત સાચી હતી. સરકારમાં આ મુદ્દે રજૂઆત તો ચોક્કસ કરી શકાય જે મે કરી..

લોકકલાકારોને રાહત મળે તેવું કાંઈક થાય તો ઉત્તમ…

A couple of days back, Chainikaben called from Mumbai. Pihu, her daughter happened to watch the vlog on our work during the COVID crisis. Pihu is the same age as my daughter Kiara. After listening to the talk she conveyed her desire to make a  contribution to VSSM.

Kiara too has been overhearing my conversions with the leaders from settlements who call me all through the day asking for ration. “Ma, these people really don’t have anything to eat?” she asked one day. I shared some images and videos with her. “How can I help them, Ma?” she had asked.

 Both these daughters are way too small to earn for themselves. But they do have a piggy bank where they drop their daily saving. 

 Furthermore, both of them donated their savings to VSSM, their very first contribution for a cause.

The contribution by Pihu and Kiara was used to provide ration kits to families residing at Rethal village near Ahmedabad.

 The reason for this post is to share the need to inculcate empathy in children from a very early age.  Are we instilling the right values in our children? We mould them, educate them to earn in thousands and lacs but do we teach them to share part of that earning with those in need? Are we raising them to become socially responsible humans?

Since the kits were from Pihu and Kiara’s contribution I personally went to distribute the kits in  the community. 

મુંબઈથી ચૈનીકાબેનને ફોન આવ્યો. તેમની દીકરી પીહુએ વિચરતી જાતિઓ સાથે કરેલા કામોના અનુભવો અંગેના વિડીયો સાંભળ્યા.

પીહુ મારી કિઆરા જેવડી. એણે વાત સાંભળીને મારે પણ કશુંક આપવું છે એવું ચૈનિકાબહેનને કહ્યું.

મારી કિઆરા પણ રોજ વિવિધ વસાહતોમાંથી મારા પર આવતા ફોન સાંભળે. લોકો ખાવાનું નથીની રાવ કરતા. એક દિવસ એણે કહ્યું, તે મા સાચ્ચે આ લોકો પાસે ખાવા નથી? મે ફોટો અને વિડીયો બતાવ્યા અને એણે કહ્યું, હું આ લોકોને શું આપી શકુ મા?

બંને દીકરીઓ નાની. એ તો ક્યાંથી કમાય?

પણ એમના ગલ્લામાં એમની નાની બચત ખરી.

પીહુ અને કિઆરાએ એમની બચત VSSMમાં આપી.

દીકરીઓનું પહેલું અનુદાન..

સાણંદ પાસેના રેથળ ગામમાં રહેતા પરિવારોને આ અનુદાનમાંથી રાશન આપ્યું.

આ પોસ્ટ બાળકોને કેવા સંસ્કાર આપી શકીએ એ માટે ખાસ લખી છે. કોઈની મહત્તા સાબિત કરવા માટે નહીં..

લાખો કમાવવાનું આપણે બાળકોને રોજ શીખવીએ પણ એ કમાણીનો અમુક ભાગ સમાજ માટે કાઢવાનું સમાજ વિજ્ઞાન બાળકોને્ શીખવીએ છીએ?
