Chaangda village shows awareness towards environment conservation by tree plantation…

“We always wanted to plant trees, but the fear of their survival deterred us from going forward. In the past, we have planted trees, but most of the saplings never made it. However, after your assurance, we planted 12000 trees on the premises of Lord Ram temple. This region is water-starved, and the groundwater tables are low and saline. We did not have a borewell either, but as they say, where there is a will, there is a way; the borewell we drilled had sweet water. Within two years, these trees will begin to give cool shade to the worshipers coming to the temple.”

Banaskantha’s Chaangda village community leaders talked about their wish to carry out a plantation there. However, since the plot of land adjacent to the Ram temple had always remained vacant, it got treated as a wasteland, with the villagers using it to dispose of their dead cattle. So the community decided to cover this wasteland into a green oasis. Consequently, with support from Rosy Blue India Private Limited, VSSM carried out the plantation at the selected site.

Before we initiated the plantation activities, the community cleaned the site and removed the wild invasive trees. After completion of the plantation, the community monitors the site, and 12000 trees are growing well under their care. Inspired by the success of the first plantation drive, the villagers have now decided to spare another plot of land near a temple for the second phase of the plantation.

We hope other villages show similar awareness and raise jungles of 25,000 to 30,000 trees. Only trees would help bring down the temperatures, bring rain, and reduce the occurrence of droughts and floods. Our efforts need to focus on turning the entire earth green again, and not just Banaskantha.

VSSM’s Naranbhai Raval, Maheshbhai Choudhry, and Maheshbhai work very hard to ensure that these plantation drives are executed as per their criteria.

The immense efforts of Arjanbhai and Dungarbhai Patel, the two vriksh mitra of Chaangda, should be congratulated for their efforts in raising these trees.

“અમાર ઝાડખા વાબ્બા’તા. પણ થોડી બીકેય લાગતી’તી. દર ચોમાસે ઝાડ વવાય ઘણા પણ બધા ઊગે નહીં એટલે. પણ તમે વિસવા આલ્યો. તે રાજારામભગવાના મંદિરની આ જગ્યામાં 12,000 થી વધારે ઝાડખા વાવી દીધા. અમાર ઓય પોણી નતું. ઝાડખા માટે અમાર બોર કરવાનો’તો. અમાર આ વિસ્તારમાં તળમાં મેઠા પોણી નહીં. પણ ભગવોને એહ પુરી તે બોરમાં પેલી વારકુ જ મેઠુ પોણી આયુ. એક બે વર્ષમાં ભગવોનના દર્શને આવનાર દર્શાનાર્થી બેહી હકે એવી સરસ લીલોતરી ઓય થઈ જવાની..”

બનાસકાંઠાના થરાદના ચાંગડાકામના આગેવાનોએ આ કહ્યું. ભગવાન રાજારામના મંદિરની બાજુની અવાવરુ, આમ તો મરેલા ઢોર જ્યાં નાખી દેવામાં આવતા એ જગ્યામાં રોઝી બ્લુ ઈન્ડિયા પ્રા.લી.ની મદદથી VSSM એ વૃક્ષો વાવ્યા. ગામે આ જગ્યા વૃક્ષો વાવી ઉછેરવા આપી. એટલે આ શક્ય બન્યું.

ગામે પાણીની વ્યવસ્થા કરી આપી સાથે જમીનની સફાઈ ખાસ તો ગાંડો બાવળ કાઢી આપ્યો. એ પછી અમે વૃક્ષો વાવ્યા. પણ ગામની દેખરેખ ઘણી. ગામ પણ જાગૃત એટલે વૃક્ષો સરસ ઉછરી રહ્યા છે. 12,000થી વધારે વૃક્ષોનો સરસ ઉછેર જોઈને ગામે મંદિર પાસેની અન્ય એક જગ્યામાં પણ આ ચોમાસે વૃક્ષો વાવવાની નેમ રાખી.

બસ દરેક ગામ ચાંગડાની જેમ જાગે ને પોતાના ગામમાં ઓછામાં ઓછા 25 થી 30 હજાર વૃક્ષોના જંગલો કરે.. આ થશે તો વાતાવારણમાં ઠંડક થશે, વરસાદ નિયમીત અને સારો આવશે. દુષ્કાળ, પૂરનું પ્રમાણ ઘટશે. તો માત્ર બનાસકાંઠો હરિયાળો નહીં આખી પૃથ્વી હરિયાળી કરવા મથીએ..

અમારા આ કાર્યમાં અમારા કાર્યકર નારણભાઈ રાવળ, મહેશભાઈ ચોધરી, મહેશભાઈ બોકાની મહેનત ઘણી. પણ સૌથી વધારે દેખરેખ વૃક્ષોની સાર સંભાળ રાખનાર વૃક્ષમિત્ર અરજણભાઈ પટેલ તેમજ ડુંગરાભાઈ પટેલની.. તમને બધાને પ્રણામ..

“We are now experiencing a little relief with drinking water availability for drinking and domestic use, but there was a time when we bathed once a week. All we could afford was to sponge ourselves and get on with our chores. Women fighting over the water was a daily affair, and when water tankers reached our village, there was mayhem. The water pots and all the water-carrying vessels suffered bruises and dents, so much so that the nomadic smiths would stay put for up to a month to finish the repair jobs.” Tadav’s ex-sarpanch, Shri Pravinsinh Rajput, narrated the water woes Banaskantha experienced in the past.

In recent times Gujarat has seen significant improvement in drinking water accessibility, but the same is not for agriculture. The rampant and unchecked groundwater extraction has pushed its tables to as low as 1200 feet. While the government has launched water conservation efforts to raise groundwater levels, voluntary actions are also made in the same direction.

It has been almost seven years since VSSM launched water conservation efforts in Banaskantha. As a result of the community participation efforts, we have successfully deepened 200 lakes in various villages. Last year we furthered these efforts into Sabarkatha. This year we plan to extend the lake-deepening efforts to neighboring Mehsana. VSSM has been receiving tremendous support from respected minister Shri Hrishikesh Patel.

We have begun deepening the first lake of the season in Banaskantha.

This year we have raised our target of the number of lakes to be deepened; to get desired results, it would be better if civil society comes forward ad chooses to support these efforts.

“પાણીનું સુખ હવે થયું. હાલ પીવા અને વાપરવા છૂટથી પાણી મળે બાકી એક વખત હતો જ્યારે નાહવાનો વારો એક અઠવાડિયે આવતો. બાકી રોજ ભીનો ગાભો શરીર પર ફેરવી નીશાળ જતા રહેવાનું. બહેનોમાં મહત્તમ ઝઘડા પાણીને લઈને થતા.. ટેન્કર આવે ત્યારે પડાપડી હોય. દરેકના ઘરે પાણી ભરવાના વાસણ ઘડા, દેગડા, ચરુડીઓમાં ઘોબા એટલે હોતા કે અમારા વિસ્તારમાં કંસારા વાસણ ઠીક ઠાક કરવા આવે તો લગભગ મહિનો મહિનો ગામમાં રોકાતા. એમને એટલું કામ મળતું. ”

બનાસકાંઠાના વાવના ટડાવગામના ભૂતપૂર્વ સરપંચ શ્રી પ્રવિણસીંહ રાજપૂતે આ વાત કરી.

ગુજરાતના ઘણા વિસ્તારોમાં પીવાના પાણીને લઈને હખ થઈ ગયું છે. પણ ખેતીમાં એવું હખ બધે નથી થયું. ભૂગર્ભજળ ઊંડા જઈ રહ્યા છે. 800 થી લઈને ક્યાંક 1200 ફૂટે પાણી મળે છે.

આવામાં સરકાર પણ પોતાની રીતે જળસંચયના કામો કરી તળ ઉપર લાવવા કોશીશ કરે. તો ક્યાંક લોકો સ્વંયમ ભૂ પ્રયત્નો કરે.

VSSM પણ છેલ્લા છ – સાત વર્ષથી બનાસકાંઠામાં #જળસંચયના કાર્યો કરે. અત્યાર સુધી 200 તળાવો અમે ગ્રામજનોની ભાગીદારીથી ઊંડા કર્યા.

ગત વર્ષથી સાબરકાંઠામાં પણ આ કાર્યો આરંભ્યા છે. આ વર્ષે બનાસકાંઠા, સાબરકાંઠા ઉપરાંત #મહેસાણા જિલ્લામાં પણ તળાવો ઊંડા કરવાનું કાર્ય કરીશું. આદરણીય શ્રી #ઋષીકેશભાઈ_પટેલ માનનીય મંત્રી શ્રીની અમારા માટે ઘણી લાગણી એમની મદદ પણ આ કાર્યમાં મળી રહી છે.

બનાસકાંઠાના બલોઘરગામમાં અમે આ સીઝનનું પ્રથમ તળાવ ઊંડુ કરવાનું શરૃ કર્યું. ગામનો સહયોગ અદભૂત. રોઝી બ્લુ ઈન્ડિયા પ્રા.લી. આ ગામનું તળાવ ઊંડુ કરવામાં અમને મદદ કરે. એમનો ઘણો આભાર..

આ વર્ષ ઘણા #તળાવો કરવાનો મનોરથ સેવ્યો છે. સમાજ પણ સહયોગ કરે તો ઘણું ઉમદા કાર્ય થઈ શકે.

The community support at Tharad has bloomed in form of the trees…

Plantation of 6000 trees at the Tharad Graveyard

“Bahen, we want to plant and raise trees at our graveyard!” Tharad‘s Hanifbhai called to share their collective intent. Such calls are always music to my ears.

Later, we made a site visit to comprehend the work involved. It is a vast graveyard that could easily host 6000 plus trees. Hanifbhai and others contributed wholeheartedly to cleaning and fencing the site and drilling a borewell for the water required to raise the to-be-planted trees. Apart from these, the group also contributed to our remuneration to the Vriksh Mitra. The collective efforts led to the plantation of 6000 trees at the graveyard.

Hanifbhai and the group replaced the trees that did not take root, not once did they tell us to bring replacements or come complaining. Apart from it, they also voluntarily spent on miscellaneous expenses that popped up at regular intervals. Any community-supported work flourishes only when we take ownership; it is not ideal to depend on the government or others to accomplish little needs; one can never reach desired goals with such an attitude.

This year we have carried out tree plantation drives at numerous villages but have yet to come across anyone like Hanifbhai and his team, who are proactive toward raising trees. Achvadiya is one such village; we are growing 7000 trees here. However, the community never calls us up for any minor issues. So are the villages of Surana, Mandla, Makhanu, Dama, Ludra, Bepun, etc.

If each village takes up the responsibility, we can significantly increase our work’s efficiency. VSSM wishes to plant a maximum number of trees next year; if you are one of those supportive community do get in touch with us.

અમારા કબ્રસ્તાનમાં વૃક્ષો વાવી ઉછેરવા છે બેન…થરાદથી હનીફભાઈનો ફોન આવ્યો. અમને તો ભાવતુ’તુ ને વૈદે કીધા જેવું થયું. એ પછી કબ્રસ્તાનની મુલાકાત લીધી. બહુ મોટુ કબ્રસ્તાન 6000 થી વૃક્ષો આવી જાય એવું.હનીફભાઈ અને અન્ય સ્વજનોએ પણ પૂરી ભાગીદારી દાખવી. સ્મશાનમાં સફાઈ કરવાથી લઈને દિવાલ, દિવાલ પર ફ્રેન્સીંગ, પાણી માટે બોરવેલ એમણે બનાવી આપ્યો. સાથે વૃક્ષમિત્રને અમે જે પગાર આપીયે તેમાં એ લોકોએ પોતે પણ ચોક્કસ રકમનો ઉમેરે. આ કાર્ય માટે અમને અમારા ડો. અલીમ અદાતિયાએ મદદ કરી. આમ સહિયારા પ્રયાસથી કબ્રસ્તાનમાં 6000 થી વધુ વૃક્ષો વાવ્યા.

વાવેલા વૃક્ષોમાંથી વૃક્ષો બળ્યા તો એમણે અમને બીજા વાવોનું ન કહ્યું જાતે જઈને નવા ખરીદી આવ્યા. એ સિવાય નાનો મોટો ખર્ચ પણ એ લોકો પોતાની રીતે કરી લે.

પોતાનું છે એમ માની રસ લઈને કામ કરીએ તો કામ સફળ જરૃર થાય. પણ નાની નાની વાતોમાં સરકાર કે અન્ય પર આધારિત રહીએ તો ઈચ્છીત પરિણામ સુધી ન પહોંચાય.

અમે આ વર્ષે ઘણી જગ્યાએ વૃક્ષો વાવ્યા પણ હનીફભાઈની ટીમ જેવા વ્યક્તિઓ ઘણા ઓછા મળ્યા જે અમારી સાથે પોતે પણ વૃક્ષો ઉછેરવા મથે… અછવાડિયા અમારુ એવું જ ગામ.. 7000થી વૃક્ષો ત્યાં ઉછરે. સફાઈ માટે કે અન્ય જરૃરિયાત માટે ગામ એમને ફોન ન કરે. આવુ જ સુરાણા, માંડલા, મખાણુ,દામા, લુદ્રા બેણપ વગેરે ગામોનું પણ ખરુ…બસ આવી રીતે દરેક ગામ પોતાની જવાબદારી સમજી લે તો કેટલું સરસ થઈ જાય… આવતા વર્ષ માટે વધારે વૃક્ષો વાવવા છે બસ જેમને ભાગીદારી સાથે કાર્ય કરવામાં રસ હોય તે સંપર્ક જરૃર કરે.

Mittal Patel meets local leaders of Morali at the village crematorium

In its urgency to plant and raise trees, VSSM, in partnership with the local community and forest department in some instances, has planted 4,92,000 trees in Banaskantha. The effort does not stop at planting trees; we also ensure each tree is looked after to grow into a healthy tree. It is a delight to witness rising awareness amongst the rural communities who now take proactive steps towards tree plantation.

The Sarpanch of Morali village had been requesting to carry out a tree plantation; the community had cleaned the land and created a water facility. As a result, we decided to plant 7000 trees and made pits for it, but now that the rains are gone, we will first install a drip irrigation facility before proceeding with the plantation.

We are grateful to Shri Partulbhai Shroff of the Dr. K. R. Shroff Foundation for supporting the tree plantation at Morali village. And a deep appreciation for the Sarpanch of the village for his awareness and proactiveness. We hope each village’s local leadership and community portrays such enthusiasm and plans to raise a minimum of 15000 trees in their respective village. I am sure Banaskantha will go back to its greener times, and rains, too, will have no choice but to shower its blessings across the region.

વૃક્ષો ઉછેરવાની તત્પરતા..બનાસકાંઠામાં અમે કુલ 4,92,000 વૃક્ષો વાવ્યા એ પણ ઉછેરના સંકલ્પ સાથે..લોકો હવે વૃક્ષો પ્રત્યે જાગૃત થઈ રહ્યા છે અનો રાજીપો..મોરીલાગામના સરપંચ પોતાના ગામની સ્મશાનભૂમીમાં વૃક્ષો ઉછેરવા વારંવાર કહ્યા કરે. એમણે સરસ સફાઈ પણ કરી આપી..ગામનો ઉત્સાહ સરસ વળી પાણીની સગવડ પણ કરી આપી. આમ અમે 7000 થી વૃક્ષો વાવવાનું ત્યાં નક્કી કર્યું અને ખાડા થઈ ગયા. વરસાદ ગયો એટલે એમ જ વાવવાનું નહીં કરીએ. પ્રથમ ડ્રીપ કરીને પછી વૃક્ષો વાવવાનું આયોજન કરીશું..

મોરીલામાં વૃક્ષો ઉછેરવા માટે અમને ડો.કે.આર.શ્રોફ ફાઉન્ડેશને મદદ કરી. પ્રિય પ્રતુલભાઈ શ્રોફનો ઘણો આભાર. સાથે ગામે પણ તત્પરતા દાખવી એ માટે ગામનો ને જાગૃત સરપંચનો આભાર..બસ દરેક ગામ આવી રીતે જાગૃત થાય ને પોતાના ગામમાં ઓછામાં ઓછા 15,000 થી વધુ વૃક્ષો વાવી જંગલો ઊભા કરે તો બનાસકાંઠો હરિયાળો થશે ને પછી વરસાદને પણ પડવા મજબૂર થવું પડશે..

મોરીલાનું સ્મશાન જ્યાં અમે વૃક્ષો વાવી ઉછેરવાના તે તેમજ ગામના વડિલો સાથે ચાય પે ચર્ચા….અમારા કાર્યકર નારણભાઈ, મહેશભાઈ અને અન્યની ભૂમિકા પણ મહત્વની તેઓ ગામોને વૃક્ષો માટે તૈયાર કરે..

It is believed crematoriums are home to ghosts and evil spirits and hence should never be entered, but now people come for picnics at the crematorium of our village!

The crematorium of Achvadiya village of Banaskantha’s Diyodar block was heavily infested with gaando baval trees. The village community decides to remove those, plant valuable trees, and turn the crematorium into a green oasis. They came together and incurred the cost of cleaning and fencing the site with barbed wire and boundary wall.

The barbed wire fencing was costing a little more than the community could mobilize, hence we contributed a part of it along with procuring and planting trees, setting up the drip irrigation system, and appointing a vriksh mitra, a person to care for and nurture the trees. The result of these combined efforts of the villagers and support from our respected Shri Krishnakant Mehta and Indira Mehta has been the creation of Sanjeev Upvan with the plantation of 7500 trees at Achvadiya crematorium.

“Ben, the crematorium comes alive with bird songs by numerous bird species living on and around the trees at the crematorium. Apart from the birds, snakes, mongoose, and hare have also made this woodland their home,” families living around Achvadiya shared.

The villagers of Achvadiya have not just made their life better but also brought well-being to the lives of numerous other beings. We are sure mother Earth and Almighty will be showering their blessings for this act of kindness.

If each village chooses to do its bit towards giving back to nature and raise 15000 to 20000 trees around their town, it would sure change the natural landscape for good.

Let us create an understanding, share a bit of our income, contribute to nature’s favourite jobs, and provide our Earth with a greener future.

‘સ્મશાનમાં ભૂત પલીત વસે એવું સૌ માને એટલે કારણ વગર સ્મશાનમાં કોઈ પગ ન મુકે.. પણ હવે અમારા સ્મશાનમાં લોકો પીકનીક કરવા આવે છે’

વાત છે બનાસકાંઠાના દિયોદરના અછવાડિયાની. ગામનું સ્મશાન ગાંડાબાવળથી ભરેલું. ગામના લોકોએ ભેગા મળીને સ્મશાનને અન્ય વૃક્ષોથી હરિયાળુ કરવાનું નક્કી કર્યું ને એ માટે સફાઈ, તારની વાડ, દિવાલ વગેરે માટે ગામે સારો એવો ખર્ચ કર્યો.

તારની વાડમાં થોડો ખર્ચ કરવો પડે એમ હતો એમાં અમે મદદ કરી,સાથે વૃક્ષો લાવી ખાડા કરી વાવવાનું, ડ્રીપથી પાણી આપવાનું ને વૃક્ષોને સાચવવા વૃક્ષમિત્રોને પગાર આપવાનું અમે કર્યું. જેના લીધે સ્મશાનમાં 7500 થી વધુ વૃક્ષો અમે અમારા પ્રિય આદરણીય ક્રિષ્ણકાંત મહેતા અને ઈન્દિરા મહેતા તેમજ ગ્રામજનોની મદદથી વાવ્યા.

આમ સહિયારા પ્રયાસથી સંજીવ ગ્રામવન(ઉપવન) ત્યાં ઊભુ થયું.

અછવાડિયા આસપાસના ગામના લોકો કહે, ‘બેન સાંજના અછવાડિયાના સ્મશાનમાં જઈએ તો પક્ષીઓનો કિલ્લોલ સંભળાય. હજારો જીવો ત્યાં રહેતા થઈ ગયા. સસલા, સાપ, નોળિયા, મોરના ઘણા પરિવારો ત્યાં વસવા માંડ્યા.’

ટૂંકમાં અછવાડિયાના લોકોએ પોતાની સાથે અન્ય કેટલાય જીવોને આશરો આપ્યો. તેમના આ માનવતાભર્યા કાર્યને જોઈને મા ધરતી અને ઈશ્વર બેઉ રાજી થતા હશે..

દરેક ગામ આવું સમજણું થઈ જાય ને પોતાના ગામમાં ઓછામાં ઓછા 15000 થી 20,000 વૃક્ષો ઉછેરે તો ગામનું વાતાવરણ બદલાઈ જાય..

બસ સૌ સમજણ કેળવીએ ને ધરતીને હરિયાળી કરવા કુદરતના ગમતા આ કાર્ય માટે આપણી કમાણીમાંથી થોડું બાજુએ કાઢીએ…

‘Ben, we wish to plant thousands of trees in our village, we have space and are also prepared to clean and fence the selected site, but water remains an issue. We do not have enough water in our village. Even the 300 cows in our Gaushala face drinking water difficulties. If we raise the trees, the cows too will find a shade to rest, and so will other living beings.” Ishwarbhai from Banaskantha’s Soni villages shares water woes with us.

It would work wonders if we could make arrangements for water; it could help us raise 15,000 to 20,000 trees and quench the thirst of 300 plus cows. But unfortunately, the only option we had was drilling a borewell, but it was also an expensive option.

VSSM’s well-wishing friend Vijaybhai Doshi and his wife are tree and cow enthusiasts. VSSM shared with Vijaybhai its wish to drill a borewell for the benefit of trees and cattle; they immediately agreed to bear the cost provided the community also shares some of it. Finally, we began drilling a borewell with significant support from Vijaybhai and Soneshwar Goushala, also contributing to the cost.

A Bhoomi Pujan ceremony was performed to seek permission and forgiveness of Mother Earth before we drilled through her belly. The office-bearers of Soneshwar Gaushala and volunteers from the village remained present during the Bhoomi pujan.

We are grateful for allowing Naranbhai and me to perform the Bhoomi Pujan.

We will soon begin the plantation of 20000 trees in the village.

“બેન અમારા ગામમાં હજારો વૃક્ષો ઉછરે એવી જગ્યા છે અમે સફાઈ અને તાર ફ્રેન્સીગ પણ કરી આપીયે પણ પાણીની વ્યવસ્થા નથી.. અમારી ગૌશાળામાં 300 ગાયો છે એને પણ પાણીની તકલીફ છે. જો વૃક્ષો ઉછરે તો આ ગાયો ને પણ કુદરતી છાંયડો મળે ને કેટલાય જીવોનું ઘર આ વૃક્ષો બને.. અને ગાયોને પણ પાણીની શાંતિ થઈ જાય”

એક સાથે 15000 થી 20,000 વૃક્ષો ઉછરે, ગાયોને પણ પીવાનું પાણી મળી જાય તો કેવું મજાનું કામ થઈ જાય પણ મુશ્કેલી હતી પાણીની… પાણી માટે બોરવેલ સિવાય વિકલ્પ નહીં અને બોરવેલ માટેનો ખર્ચ પાછો મસમોટો…

આમારા કાર્યોમાં અમને મદદ કરતા વિજયભાઈ દોશી ને તેમના પત્ની ગૌ અને વૃક્ષ પ્રેમી. તેમની સામે અમારી લાગણી વ્યક્ત કરી ને એમણે તુરત ગામલોકો થોડી મદદ કરે ને બાકીની અમે કરીશું એમ કહીને બોરવેલ માટે મદદ કરવાનું સ્વીકાર્યું.

આમ વિજયભાઈના મહત્તમ સહયોગથી અને સોનેશ્વર ગૌશાળાની ભાગીદારીથી સોનીમાં બોરવેલ બનાવવાનું શરૃ કર્યું.જે જગ્યાએ બોરવેલ કરવાનો છે ત્યાં મા ધરાના હૃદયમાં છેદ કરીને પાણી ઉલેચવાના. એટલે મા ધરતીની પેટાળમાંથી પાણી ઉલેચી રહ્યા છીએ તારી છાતી પર છેદ કર્યો એની માફી માંગી અને કદી ખૂટે નહીં એવું પાણી આપજેની પાર્થના સાથે ભૂમીપૂજન કર્યું.

સોનેશ્વર ગૌશાળાના પદાધિકારીઓ તેમજ ગામના સેવાકાર્યોમાં રસ ધરાવનાર સૌ હાજર રહ્યા. બોરવેલનું ભૂમીપૂજન કરવાનો ગામે મને અને અમારા કાર્યકર નારણભાઈને મોકો આપ્યો એ માટે આભાર…બસ 20,000 વૃક્ષોનું સરસ ગ્રામવન ત્યાં ઊભુ કરીએ…

A few years ago, we embarked on the journey to build water shrines in Banaskatha. The rocky ride of the beginning is turning into a smooth path as the team of VSSM now receives invites to work on the deepening of lakes with acceptance of all the pre-conditions VSSM puts forward. They tell us we have the right to put forward our conditions. And this awakening only makes us happy.

The lake at Arnivada village had ceased to exist, with no sign of its being. It had chocked under the uncontrolled growth of gando-baval and layers of soil accumulation. No one could tell that the site was once a lake.

The village leaders sent us an invite and agreed to accept all the criteria for dredging the lake in partnership. We began removing the clogs and muck that had overwhelmed the lake’s existence (as seen in the attached image).

I had the opportunity to visit the village when the dredging work was underway. The community gave us a warm welcome and their wish to allocate space for planting trees, but the town could not reach a consensus on the matter. We will be waiting for them to come an agreement, hopefully soon! I wish for a day when the villages wake up to the call of the earth and do their bit to preserve nature.

કેટલાક લોકોને ક્યારેક મળવાનું થયું હોય અથવા ક્યારેય મળ્યા જ નહોઈયે છતાં તેમની સાથે એક અનોખો નાતો બંધાઈ જાય. જેના લીધે કેટલાક હક પણ મળી જાય…ને હક હોય ત્યાં લાગણી હોય એટલે વાતને માન્યતા પણ ઝટ મળે..

બનાસકાંઠા સાથે આવો જ નાતો બંધાઈ ગયો છે. જલમંદિરોના નિર્માણનું કાર્ય અમે આરંભ્યું. હવે તો ગામો સામેથી પોતાના ગામમાં આવવા આમંત્રણ આપે ને આમંત્રણની સાથે અમે કહીએ તે શરતો મંજૂર કરે. શરતો મૂકી શકવાનો હક આપે. એનાથી વધારે રાજી થવાય.

અરણીવાડાગામ જ્યાનું ગામ તળાવ બાવળોથી ભરેલું અને પુરાઈ જવાના આરે. થોડું સાહિતીક રીતે કહુ તો બિચારુ મૂંઝારા અનુભવતું. મૂંઝારા અનુભવે એ વ્યાજબી. એક તો ગાંડો બાવળ પરેશાન કરે ને બીજા માટીના તો થર પથરાયેલા. આમ અસલ સ્વરૃપ જ નહોતું.

ગામે કહેણ મોકલ્યું, માટી ઉપાડવાની શરત મંજૂરી કરી ને અમે તળાવના મૂંઝારા દૂર કરવાનું શરૃ કર્યું. એક ફેઝમાં ખોદાયેલું તળાવ જોઈ શકાય છે.

ગામમાં તળાવ ઊંડુ થતું હતું તે વખતે જવાનું થયું ત્યારે લોકોએ વહાલથી સ્વાગત તો કર્યું સાથે વૃક્ષો ઉછેરવા જગ્યા આપવા કહ્યું. ખેર પછી વૃક્ષો ઉછેરવા બાબતે ગામની સહમતી ન આવી. પણ સહમતી આવે એની વાટ….

આશા રાખુ પર્યાવરણ માટે દરેક ગામ જાગે ને પોતાના ભાગનું કરે..

“Ben, our village reels under severe water challenges. 150-200 ft under the ground, we hit the rocks. To have water in our wells and drill borewells, we must keep our lakes healthy. Since the community here values water and understands its importance, it has always tried to dredge and maintain the lakes without any support from the government. Can you please help us deepen our lakes? this request to you is not to help us gratuitously; we will contribute to the efforts and lift the dredged muck/soil.” Mahendibhai from Sabarkantha came to us with this request.

Mahendibhai has requested us to visit their village for the last three months. Despite our efforts, we found it hard to make it to Kanai. Also, it was a village in Sabarkantha and we weren’t prepared to venture into a new region. However, we had our apprehensions because of our past experiences of false promises. Community leadership would invite us to work in their village, but they would back out when the contribution was requested.

Nonetheless, giving in to Tohid and Mahendibhai’s request, we visited Kanai village not just to see the lake to be dredged but also to see the site for tree plantation as promised.

The local leadership had arranged for a Gram Sabha where Mahendibhai introduced VSSM, its initiatives and its approach. The community agreed to contribute to the lake deepening and tree plantation drive. Although the water scarcity in the village is absolute, the availability of water would help them with agriculture and cattle farming. The unity at Kanai village is exceptional; we haven’t come across many proactive villages like this one.

Of course, there was an imminent need to deepen the lake in Kanai. Hence, we put in a request to Krishnakant Uncle, who immediately agreed to support the task.

We will be building ‘Sanjeev Jalashay’ with the contribution of the villagers.

The village has also earmarked enough land to plant 10,000 trees; if they can provide water, VSSM will plant trees on the allotted site.

We have initiated water conservation efforts in Sabarkantha; two lakes were deepened in the tribal region of Poshina (more on that later). But, of course, the desire is to have more proactive villages like Kanai.

સાબરકાંઠાથી…

“બેન અમારા ગામમાં પાણીની ખુબ મુશ્કેલી છે. 150 થી 200 ફૂટે કાળો પથ્થર આવી જાય. બોરવેલ ને કૂવા અમે કરીએ. પણ આ બધામાં પાણી આવે તે માટે અમારા ગામના તળાવો અમારે સાબદા રાખવા પડે. એટલે અમારા કનઈવાસીઓએ સરકારની મદદ વગર જાતે અમારા તળાવો શક્ય ઊંડા કરવા કોશીશ કરી છે. અમને પાણીનું મહત્વ ખબર છે. તમે અમારા ગામનું તળાવ ઊંડુ કરવા મદદ કરો. અમને મફત કશું નથી જોઈતું અમે પણ ફાળો આપીશું, માટી ઉપાડીશું.”

સાબરકાંઠાના કનઈગામના મહેંદીભાઈએ આ કહ્યું.

આમ તો છેલ્લા છ મહિનાથી એ પોતાના ગામમાં આવવાનું નિમંત્રણ આપી રહ્યા હતા. પણ સંજોગો નહોતો થતા. વળી અમે નવા વિસ્તારમાં જવા તૈયાર નહીં. મૂળ ભાગીદારીની વાતો ઘણા કરે પણ ખરા અર્થમાં ભાગીદારીની વાત આવે ત્યારે લોકો ફસકી જાય માટે નથી કરવું એવું મન બનાવેલું..

પણ અમારા કાર્યકર તોહીદ અને મહેંદીભાઈના આગ્રહને વશ તળાવ જોવા સાથે એમણે પોતાના ગામમાં વૃક્ષો ઉછેરવા પણ એક જગ્યા આપવા કહેલું તે એ જોવા ખાસ ગયા.અમે ગામમાં પહોંચ્યા તો ગામે સરસ ગ્રામસભાનું આયોજન કરેલું ને સૌને VSSM કેવી રીતે કામ કરે તે મહેંદીભાઈએ સમજાવેલું. ગ્રામસભામાં સૌએ તળાવ ઊડું કરવા અને વૃક્ષો ઉછેરવા શક્ય તમામ સહયોગની ખાત્રી આપી.

આખા ગામનો સંપ જબરજસ્ત. આવા સંપીલા ગામ મે ખાસ જોયા નથી. પાણીની સખત મુશ્કેલી. ખેતીની બે સીઝન એ લોકો લે. પણ ખેતી કરતા વધુ પાણી મળે તો પશુપાલન થઈ શકે તેવું તેમણે કહ્યું.

સ્થિતિ સમજી તળાવ ઊંડુ કરવું જરૃરી લાગ્યું ને અમારા ક્રિષ્ણકાંત અંકલ(મહેતા)ને મદદ કરવા કહ્યુ ને એમણે તુરત એ માટે હા પાડી.

સંજીવ જળાશય અમે બાંધીશું ગામ પણ ભાગીદારી નોંધાવશે. સાથે લગભગ 10,000 વૃક્ષો ઉછરી શકે તેવી જગ્યા પણ ગામે આપી. ગામ પાણીની વ્યવસ્થા કરી આપશે તો વૃક્ષો પણ વાવીશું અને ઉછેરીશું. અને હા સાબરકાંઠામાં જળસંચયના કાર્યો શરૃ કર્યા. #પોશિના આદિવાસી વિસ્તાર ત્યાં આ વર્ષે બે તળાવ ગાળ્યા.. એની વાત ફરી ક્યારેક… પણ દરેક ગામોમાં કનઈ જેવો સંપ થાય તે ઈચ્છનીય…

Mittal Patel visits Samaumota tree plantation site

“Can you help us plant trees at the ganda-baval infested crematorium of our village?” Banaskantha’s Samaumota village’s Sarpanch calls us with this request. VSSM’s Naranbhai and Maheshbhai visited the village to evaluate the onsite conditions.

The crematorium had live fencing, but the ganda-baval trees needed to be removed. The milk cooperative pitched in and we cleared the ganda baval bust from the site. And the Panchayat has helped bring water to the site.

Once the basic requirements were met, it was time for VSSM to begin digging the pits for the plantation. However, the soil is too tight to be drilled in; hence after digging 900 holes, we decided to wait for rain to soften the ground. We will dig up and plant the trees in one go. We will also set up a drip irrigation facility and appoint a Vriksh Mitra. We plan to plant 3000 trees at Samaumota.

The forest department will be helping us with the saplings. The collective efforts of village leadership, forest department and VSSM will ensure the village crematorium turns lush with trees.

‘અમારા ગામનું સ્મશાન ગાંડા બાવળથી ભરેલું છે. ત્યાં સારા વૃક્ષો વાવવા છે તમે મદદ કરશો?’

#બનાસકાંઠાના ડીસાના સમૌમોટાગામથી ગામના સરપંચ શ્રીનો ફોન આવ્યો ને અમારા કાર્યકર નારણભાઈ, મહેશભાઈએ સ્મશાનની મુલાકાત લીધી.

સ્મશાન ફરતે વંડો કરેલો હતો. હવે જરૃર હતી ગાંડાબાવળને હટાવવાની. ગામની દૂધમંડળીએ એ માટે સહયોગ કર્યો ને સ્મશાનમાંથી ગાંડાબાવળને તીલાંજલી આપી. પાછુ પંચાયતે ત્યાં પાણીની સુવિધા પણ કરી આપી.

હવે અમારી ભૂમીકા શરૃ થઈ. અમે ખાડા કરવાની શરૃઆત કરી. પણ જમીન ઘણી કઠણ 900 ખાડા કરીને રહેવા દીધું. એક વરસાદ થઈ જાય પછી ખાડા કરી વૃક્ષો વાવવાનું સાથે સાથે કરી લઈશું.

અંદાજે 3000 થી વધારે વૃક્ષો ઉછેરવાના સંકલ્પ સાથે વાવીશું. ડ્રીપની વ્યવસ્થા પણ કરીશું. સાથે પગારદાર માણસ જેને અમે વૃક્ષમિત્ર કહીએ તે પણ રાખી લઈશું.

વનવિભાગ પણ વૃક્ષો આપવામાં શક્ય મદદ કરશે. આમ ગામ, દૂધમંડળી, VSSM અને #વનવિભાગના સહિયારા પ્રયાસથી સમૌમોટાનું સ્મશાન #હરિયાળુ કરવાનો અમે પ્રયાસ કરીશું.

Commedable support of People of Kant…

“Can you help us make a lake in our village? Our village has a low lying site where the rainwater flows. Although it is not a traditional lake, we want to create a shallow pond. And it would be best if we did not dig deep because the potters still use the clay from here. We want to deepen it just enough to hold up the water flowing during monsoons. It would enable water to trickle into the ground and recharge the water tables. So can you help us deepen the spot and create a pond?”

Hiteshbhai from Banaskantha’s Kaant village requested the above from VSSM’s Naranbhai. However, the site was not a traditional water body that was filled with muck and deposits. Still, considering the wish of Hiteshbhai and the community members, we eventually made a pond at Kaant. VSSM dredged the soil while the community lifted the excavated soil.

The community had been insisting I make a visit to Kaant, which I did during my recent visit to Banaskantha. The leadership of Kant village is proactive regarding water and environment conservation, and we plan to increase environmental initiatives in this village.

We have reached a point when it is crucial to conserve each drop of rain; hence such requests from the community should only be honoured and fulfilled.

‘અમારા કાંટનું તળાવ તમે ગાળી આપશો? ચોમાસાનું પાણી જ્યાં ભરાય છે તે જગ્યા પર તળાવ જેવું કશું છે જ નહીં. અમારે બહુ ઊંડુ પણ નથી કરવું. મૂળ એ જગ્યા પર માટી સારી છે. અમારા ગામના કુંભાર માટલા ઘડવા ત્યાંથી માટી લઈ જાય છે એટલે તળાવની બધી માટી નથી કાઢવી. પણ વરસાદનુ જેટલું પાણી આ જગ્યા પર આવે તે બધુ ત્યાં રોકાય અને જમીનમાં ઉતરે એ માટે તમે નાનકડુ તળાવ કરી આપો એમ ઈચ્છું છું. ‘

બનાસકાંઠાના કાંટગામના હીતેશભાઈએ આ વાત કરીને અમારા કાર્યકર નારણભાઈએ કાંટની મુલાકાત કરી. એ પછી અમે ગામનું તળાવ ગાળવાનું અમે શરૃ કર્યું.

હીતેશભાઈ અને ગામના સૌની લાગણીને અનુલક્ષીને અમે તળાવ જેવી સ્થિતિ નહોતી તે જગ્યા પર તળાવ ગાળવાનું શરૃ કર્યું. ગામે માટી ઉપા઼ડવાનું કર્યું ને સહુના સહિયારા પ્રયાસથી નાનકડુ તળાવ ગામની મરજી પ્રમાણેનું અમે ગાળ્યું.

હમણાં બનાસકાંઠા જવાનું થયું તે વેળા ગામની પ્રબળ ઈચ્છા હતી માટે ખાસ કાંટ જવાનું થયું. પાણી અને પર્યાવરણને લઈને કાંટ જાગૃત ગામ.

આગામી દિવસોમાં આ ગામમાં પર્યાવરણલક્ષી કાર્યો વધારે કરવાની ઈચ્છા..

પણ પાણીના ટીપે ટીપાને બચાવવાનું કરવું પડે તેવી સ્થિતિ પર આપણે પહોંચ્યા છે માટે આ દિશામાં વધારે કાર્ય થાય તે જરૃરી.

કાંટનું તળાવ પહેલાં અને હવે એ ફોટોમાં જોઈ શકાય.
