Mittal Patel visits Bajaniya settlement in Surendranagar

The second wave of the Pandemic caught took me in its embrace, and what a strong embrace it was. I remained very sick during the bout. But with your prayers and good wishes, I recovered entirely.

VSSM’s Kanubhai had wished to bring me to visit the Hadakwai Mata after I was out of the woods. And this obedience had to be paid.

Kanubhai and many leaders of Surendranagar’s Bajaniya community wanted me to come to visit their settlements once. Hence, along with offering my prayers and gratitude and intending to find remedies to their issues, I also met the Bajaniya leaders and community members of Gavana village.

Many daughters from their region had stayed with VSSM’s hostel,  finished studying, and went on to enroll for the degree course in nursing. One of them has also found a job at a private hospital. Some have secured admission in engineering courses after finishing schooling up till 12th grade. After witnessing the growth of these children, the community wanted their children to come and stay with VSSM-operated hostels. Bajaniya community demamding facilies for educating their children is a massive step forward. I am delighted to witness this change in their otherwise orthodox and rigid mindsets

The community members also requested financial assistance to help them begin small ventures. They drew inspiration from the families of Vadhiyar, who had found financial stability after seeking interest-free loans and financial guidance from VSSM.

If a community can apprehend that educational and economic stability are the two most empowering elements in an individual’s life, it is bound to set out on the path of progress and well-being.

There was also a discussion about homes for the homeless, we assured that VSSM would continue to voice the plight of these families and ensure they have access to government benefits.

I love this sense of awareness amongst these communities. It is an honor to receive their love and appreciation.

કોરોનાની બીજી લહેર વખતે નહોતો બોલાવ્યો તોય કોરોના મારા ઘરમાં પેઠો…મારી હાલત બહુ ખરાબ.

પણ અસંખ્ય લોકોની પ્રાર્થનાથી આજે હેમખેમ.. અમારા કનુભાઈએ તબીયત સારી થઈ જાય તો ગવાણા હડકવઈ માના દર્શન કરવા મને લઈને જશેની માનતા માનેલી..

એમની આ લાગણી અને પ્રેમ માટે આભારી..

માનતા માની હતી તે પુરી કરવાની જ હોય…

વળી કનુભાઈ અને ખારાપાટ- સુરેન્દ્રનગરના અમારા બજાણિયા સમુદાયના આગેવાનોની ઈચ્છા પણ એમના વિસ્તારમાં એમની વસાહતોની મુલાકાત લઉ એવી. તે માનતા પુર્ણ કરવાની સાથે ગવાણામાં રહેતા બજાણિયા પરિવારો સાથે તેમની મુશ્કેલીઓમાં અમે કેવી રીતે ભાગીદાર થઈ શકીએ તે અંગે વાત થઈ.

એમના વિસ્તારની દીકરીઓ અમારી હોસ્ટેલમાં ભણી આજે નસર્ગીનો ડીગ્રી કોર્સ કરવા આગળ ગઈ તો રાજલ ને હારીજમાં જ એક હોસ્પીટલમાં નોકરી મળે. કેટલાક બાળકો અમારી હોસ્ટેલમાં 12 ધો. ભણ્યા પછી એન્જીન્યરીંગ ભણવા આગળ ગયા. આ બધા બાળકોની પ્રગતિ જોઈ અમારા બાળકોને પણ હોસ્ટેલમાં પ્રવેશ આપોની વાત સૌએ કરી. આ સાંભળીને તો સૌથી વધારે રાજી થવાયું..

આ સિવાય નાના મોટા કામ ધંધા કરવા આર્થિક મદદ કરોની પણ લોકોએ વાત કરી. જે રીતે વઢિયારમાં લોન લઈને ઘણા પરિવારો બે પાંદડે થયા અદ્લ એ રીતે જ અમારે થવું છે એવી વાત થઈ. 

આર્થિક અને શૈક્ષણિક સદ્ધરતા માણસની સ્થિતિ બદલી નાખે છે અને આ બે બાબતે સમાજ વિચારતો થાય તો એની પ્રગતિ પણ ઝટ થવાની એ નક્કી..

એ પછી વાત થઈ ગવાણામાં રહેતા કેટલાક ઘરવિહોણા વ્યક્તિઓની. એ પરિવારોને ઘર અને સરકારની યોજનાઓની મદદ મળે તે માટે તો અમારે મથવાનું જ..

તેમની જાગૃતિ ગમી અને પ્રેમ તો પહેર્યા પાથરે એવો… આ પ્રેમને માથે ચડાવ્યો…

અમારા કાર્યકર મોહનભાઇ, કનુભાઈ અને હર્ષદ ખાસ જવાબદારી લઈને કામ કરવા હાજર રહ્યા…

Mittal Patel meets Alisingbhaihis wife Manjuben and small children to listen to their painful incident

Within 15 days of husbands passing away, widowed wives walking out of their marital homes and leaving behind their small children can be heart-wrenching, isn’t it?

I found it difficult to believe when Vinodbhai,  my team member, shared the above. But when he took me to Panchmahal’s Gajapura village of Ghoghamba block to meet Alsingbhai and his wife Manjuben and listen to this painful incident in their own words, I found it difficult to believe. 

Alsinghbhai’s two elder brothers met with an accident when traveling on their motorbike. The brothers died on the spot. Together these brothers had five children, and the youngest was still on mother’s milk.

Losing two sons came as a devastating blow for the family. Alsingbhai was the youngest, and along with his father he tried to take care of the situation, however, wives of both the brothers walked out of the house in less than 15 days of their death. They did not even choose to take the children along. One took the breastfed daughter along, but when Alsingbhai offered to raise the infant, his Bhabhi left her without second thoughts.

“Now consider me their kaka or father; they are my responsibility now!” Alsingbhai shared this poignant truth.

And it is not just Alsingbhai; even his wife has risen to the occasion and accepted these children as her own.

When Vinod learned about this situation, he immediately filled up forms for Palak Mata-Pita Scheme to help ease the financial burden on Alsingbhai’s shoulders. The amount has begun arriving in the children’s account, but Alsingbhai has not used a single penny from that amount. “It is children’s money; I have no right over it!” Alsingbhai replied in all honesty.

“Didi, both mothers have remarried. I learned about this situation when I met them to get the forms signed. There is a precondition that if the mother is alive but refuses to take care of the children, as she has remarried, we need to attach surviving parent’s re-marriage certificate as proof along with the application form. In the absence of this signed document, the benefits under the scheme do not commence. I visited the mothers to get the document signed, but the ladies refused to sign the forms. They did not want Alsingbhai to benefit from it.” Vinod shared these details while I was still trying to comprehend how can a mother leave her small children behind and walk away! 

I was at a loss for words! I could not believe How a mother could be so stone-hearted.

Eventually, Vinod had to seek support from community elders to resolve the issue. The documents were signed, and children began receiving financial support under the Palak- Mata Pita scheme.

VSSM plays a crucial role in ironing away the technical and social nitty-gritty to ensure the needful are linked to various welfare schemes launched by the government for the benefit of the poor. For example, we have linked 20 children to the Palak Mata Pita scheme this year.

પતિ ગુજરી ગયાના પંદર દિવસમાં જ પત્ની સાસરીયું એ પણ નાના બાળકોને નોંધારા મુકી ત્યજી દે એ વાત જ કાળજુ કંપાવનારી લાગે ને?

અમારા કાર્યકર વિનોદે મને જ્યારે આ કહ્યું ત્યારે પ્રથમ તો હું પણ મા આવું કરે એ વાત માનવા તૈયાર નહીં. પણ પછી વિનોદ મને પંચમહાલના ઘોઘંબા તાલુકાના ગજાપુરાગામ લઈ ગયો ને હું મળી અલસીંગભાઈ અને તેમના પત્ની મંજુબહેનને અને એમના મોંઢેથી બધુ સાંભળીને નવાઈ લાગી.

વાત જાણે એમ બની. અલસીંગભાઈના બે મોટાભાઈ બાઈક પર ક્યાંક જઈ રહ્યા હતા ને વચમાં અકસ્માત થયો. બે ભાઈઓનું ઘટના સ્થળે જ મૃત્યુ થયું. આ બેઉ ભાઈને મળીને કુલ પાંચ સંતાન. 

પરિવાર પર તો મૃત્યુના સમાચાર સાંભળી આભ ફાટ્યા જેવું થયું. નાના પાંચ બાળકોમાં એક દીકરી તો હજુ ધાવતી. અલસીંગભાઈ બેઉ ભાઈ પછી સૌથી નાના. એમણે ને એમના પિતાએ બધુ સંભાળવા કોશીશ કરી. પણ પતિની ચિતા હજુ બરાબર ઠરીએ નહોતી ને બેઉ ભાઈની પત્નીઓ બાળકોને મુકીને જતી રહી. હા ધાવતી દીકરીને મા સાથે લઈ ગઈ પણ અલસીંહભાઈ કહે, “નાનકી સિવાયના ચારેય નાના જ હતા ને એમની એમને નહોતી પડી તો પછી નાનકી માટે દયા શું કામ ખાવી. મે ભાભી પાસે જઈને કહ્યું, તમારે નાનકી ને ન રાખવી હોય તે એ પણ આપી દો, હું ઉછેરીશ. ને એમણે કશીયે દલીલ વગર આપી દીધી. 

બસ હવે હું જ એનો બાપ ક્યો તો એ ને કાકા ક્યો તો એ…”

અલસીંગભાઈ તો ભાઈ હતા એ બાળકોને સાચવવાનું નક્કી કરે પણ એમના પત્નીએ પણ પાંચેય બાળકોને પોતાના કર્યા.

અમારા વિનોદના ધ્યાને આખો કિસ્સો આવતા એણે પાલક માતા પિતા ફોર્મ આ બાળકો માટે ભરાવ્યા જેથી અલસિંગભાઈને ટેકો રહે. 

બાળકોને સહાય મળતી થઈ ગઈ. પણ આજ સુધી અલસીંગભાઈએ એક રૃપિયો પણ બાળકોના નામે સરકારમાંથી આવેલો વાપર્યો નથી. એ પૈસા તો બાળકોના મારો એમાં હક ન લાગે એવું એ કહે.

હું જ્યારે અલસિંગભાઈ અને બાળકોને મળી ત્યારે આવા કુમળા છોડ જેવા બાળકોને મુકીને જવાનો જીવ બાળકોની માનો કેમ ચાલ્યો હશે એ મને મૂંઝવતુ હતું. ત્યા અમારા વિનોદે કહ્યું, “દીદી મા જતી રહી.એ બીજે પરણી પણ ગઈ. જ્યારે પાલક માતા-પિતા યોજના અંતર્ગત ફોર્મ ભરવાનું હતું ત્યારે મા હયાત હોય તો એ બાળકોની હવે સંભાળ રાખતી નથી એના લગ્ન થઈ ગયા છેનો દાખલો આપણે ફોર્મ સાથે જોડવો પડે જો માતા -પિતા બેમાંથી કોઈ એક જીવતું હોય તો. આ દાખલા વગર સહાય ન મળે. હું એ દાખલો લેવા બાળકોની મા પાસે ગયો તો કોઈ ફોર્મમાં સહી ન કરી આપે. મૂળ સહાય અલસીંગભાઈને મળવાની ને એટલે….”

સાંભળીને મારી પાસેના શબ્દો ખુટી પડ્યા. ખેર વિનોદે ગામના આગેવાનોને વચમાં નાખી સહી કરાવી ને બાળકોને સહાય મળતી થઈ.. પણ એક મા આવું કરી શકે?  માન્યમાં ન આવે એવી વાત….

VSSM વિવિધ સેવાકીય પ્રવૃતિ કરે તેમાંનું એક સરકારની વિવિધ કલ્યાણકારી યોજનાઓ સાથે તકવંચિત, વિચરતી જાતિઓને જોડવાનું… બસ એના ભાગરૃપે ઘોઘંબા તાલુકાના લગભગ 20 થી વધુ નોંધારા બાળકોને પાલક માતા પિતા યોજના સાથે જોડવાનું કર્યું.

Mafakaka from Gandhinagar’s Samou stays alone in a small single-room shanty like a house devoid of power or other facilities. Since Kaka cannot work because of his age,  he begs for money to buy grains to cook his meals. However, Jitubhai, his neighbor, takes utmost care of kaka’s well-being, bringing him tea twice a day and whatever else he might need. 

VSSM began providing Mafakaka with a monthly ration kit, so he does not have to beg for money. But his house is in complete tethers. The tin roof is filled with holes, so spending the monsoon inside the house would be challenging. It also does not have a power connection.

With support from its donors,  VSSM carried out the repairs of Mafakaka’s house. Jitubhai (in black T-shirt) has an extended power connection from his house.

VSSM’s Rizwan brings him a monthly ration kit.

I recently had the opportunity to meet him, “Hope everything is ok now and you are at peace.” I inquired.

“Everything is fine, I have no worries. Life has become stress-free. And I also get to smoke chilam and a fair amount of  chai.” A happy Kaka reveals how life has gotten better. At his age, we weren’t going to advise him to give up smoking chilam. All we wish is for him to be happy.

It was a scorching summer day when we met Kaka, seated outside his house. His condition had pained us. We had shared the image of kaka’s house before we met him to understand his living situation. Kaka had come across as a mentally unstable individual, but our recent meeting proved otherwise. He was fine, talked well, and seemed happy.

The initiative under which we provide care and support to these elderly is called Maavjat. It has become one of the favorite programs of our team. And it is your invaluable support that helps us reach these elderly.

મફાકાકા ગાંધીનગરના માણસના સમૌમાં રહે..

એકલા છે. ઘર આમ તો ઘર શું નાનકડી ઓરડી જેમાં લાઈટ કે અન્ય કોઈ સુવિધા નહીં. કામ તો થાય નહીં એટલે લોકો પાસેથી પૈસા માંગે ને જે મળે તેમાંથી અનાજ લાવી રાંધી ખાય. 

પડોશમાં રહેતા જીતુભાઈ મફાકાકાનું જબરુ ધ્યાન રાખે.. બે ટાઈમ ચા આપે. એ સિવાય પણ કાકાને જ્યારે જરૃર પડે ત્યારે મદદ કરે. 

મફાકાકાને અમે રાશન આપવાનું શરૃ કર્યું જેથી માંગવું ન પડે. એ બે ટંક પેટ ભરીને ખાઈ શકે છે. પણ જે ઓરડીમાં રહે તે ઓરડીના બધા પતરા કાણા. ચોમાસુ કાઢવું તો બહુ અઘરુ પડે. વળી લાઈટ પંખાની સુવિધા નહીં. 

અમે એમની ઓરડી રીપેર કરી આપવાનું નક્કી કર્યું. આપે એ કાર્યમાં મદદ કરી. જીતુભાઈએ લાઈટ, પંખા માટે વિજળી પોતાના ઘરેથી આપી. જીતુભાઈ ફોટોમાં કાળી ટીશર્ટમાં..

બાકી દર મહિને રાશન આપવાનું કામ અમારો રીઝવાન કરે..

કાકાને હમણાં મળવાનું થયું મે પુછ્યું, કાકા હવે શાંતિ છે.. એમણે કહ્યું. હવે બધી વાતે હખ છે. જીવને તોબા નથી.. 

કાકાને ચલમની ટેવ. કાકા કહે, બે ટંક ચા ને ચલમ વના મને ન ચાલે.. 

ઉંમર થઈ હવે ચલમ છોડવાનું તો શું કહીએ.. પણ એ રાજી રહે એવું કરવાનું.

અમે એમને ધોમધખતા તાપમાં ઘર બહાર નેવા નીચે બેઠેલા જોયેલા. જોઈને જીવ બળી ગયેલો. એ ફોટો પણ આ સાથે મુકુ છુ જેથી પહેલાનું ઘર ખબર પડે. પણ એ વખતે કાકાને જાણે ઝાઝી સુઝબુઝ ન હોય એવું લાગેલું.

પણ ઘર થયા પછી મળી તો ચહેરાની રોનક જ બદલાઈ ગયેલી… એમની સાથે સરસ વાત થઈ.

આવા વડિલોને સાતા આપવાનો અમારા માવજત કાર્યક્રમ. અમારી ટીમનું આ સૌથી ગમતીલું કામ.

તમે સૌ મદદ કરો છો માટે આભારી છીએ. તમારા સહયોગ થકી જ અમે આવા માવતરોને સાતા આપી શકીએ છીએ.

“During my hay days, I used to play dhol during joyous and solemn occasions. The money was enough to sustain the two of us. But I have been sitting at home since the leg was amputated. We don’t have any children who would look after us. So we eat whatever this old lady begs and brings from the village.” Manji kaka of Patan’s Vansa village shared his predicament.

Vansa’s Sureshbhai Raval briefed us about Manjikaka’s condition.

Manjikaka belongs to the Valmiki community; with kaka’s disability, the couple survives on food Ami Ma begs and brings home. 

After we learned about their condition from Sureshbhai, VSSM’s Mohanbhai met him and enrolled for the monthly ration kit. In return, we make them promise not to beg once they begin receiving the ration kit.

“I will go to collect the newly harvested grains when the farmers bring them home; it is a tradition, and  we have a right over it.” Ami Ma tells me before committing to our proposal.

“Is there anything else we can do for you?’ I inquired.

“You are god sent for us; no one else has inquired about our well-being,” Manjikaka tells me with tears in his eyes.

He also requested a tricycle so that he could move around a little. We immediately spoke to Krishnakant uncle about it and agreed to equip Manji Kaka with a tricycle. As we said our goodbyes, we could sense relief and happiness on Manjikaka’s face.

I am grateful for the support you provide; it helps us bring cheer to the lives of such elderly in distress. Rs. 1400 is not substantial for people who wish to support, but it sure is significant for these seniors needing care and support. I hope you choose to adopt an elderly under our Mavjat initiative.

“આ ડોશી ગોમમાંથી વાળુ મોગી લાવ અન અમે ખઈએ. અમાર કોય વસ્તાર નહીં જે અમારી ચાકરી કર. પગ હાજા નરવા હતા તો હુદી ગોમમાં હારા નરસા પરસંગે ઢોલ વગાડતો, તે ઈમ હેડતુ પણ પગ કપાયો તાણથી બસ બેઠો હું.”

પાટણના વાંસાગામના મંજીકાકાએ આ કહ્યું.વાંસાના સુરેશભાઈ રાવળ ખુબ સેવાભાવી એમણે આ નિરાધાર માવતરની દુદર્શા વિષે અમને કહ્યું.

મંજીકાકા વાલ્મીકી સમાજના. પગ સાજા હતા ત્યારે ઢોલ વગાડતા અને અમીમા વાળુ માંગી લાવતા ને આમ ચાલતું. પણ હવે તબીયતના ઠેકાણા નહીં. એટલે હોય ન હોય બધુ ચલાવી લે. 

સુરેશભાઈએ મંજીકાકાની સ્થિતિની વાત કર્યા પછી અમારા કાર્યકર મોહનભાઈ મંજીકાકાને મળી આવ્યા ને દર મહિને તેમને ચાલી જાય એટલી રાશનની કીટ આપી જશેનું કહ્યું સાથે શરત હવે ભીખ માંગવા નહીં જવાની કરી. ને આ બેઉએ એ માન્ય રાખી.હા ખેતીની સીઝન પતે અને ખેડૂત ઘરે અનાજ લાવે પછી અનાજ લેવા જઈશ. અમારો હક લાગે એવું અમીમાએ હસતા હસતા કહ્યું..મે જ્યારે પુછ્યું બીજુ કશું જોઈએ છે તો, મંજીકાકા રડી પડ્યા. એમણે કહ્યું, ભગવોને તમન મેલ્યા. નકર અમારુ કુણ ઘણી..એમણે કહ્યું, પગ કપાયા પછી ઘરે બેઠા બેઠા કંટાળો આવે છે. મને ત્રણ પૈડાવાળી સાયકલ મળે તો હું ગામમાં આંટો મારી શકુ..

અમારા ક્રિષ્ણકાંત અંકલને આ અંગે વાત કરીને એમને સાયકલ આપવાનું અમે નક્કી કરી દીધું. એમના ત્યાંથી નીકળ્યા ત્યારે એમના મુખ પર સંતોષ અને હાશનો આનંદ હતો..

આપ સૌ સ્વજનો થકી અમને આવા માવતરોની સેવા કરવાની તક મળે છે. આભારી છું આપની.આપ પણ આવા નિરાધાર માવતરોના પાલક માસીક 1400 રૃપિયા આપીને બની શકો. 1400 રૃપિયા એ મોટી રકમ નથી. પણ કોઈના માટે એ જીવન છે.

“When it rains well, we head over to the banks of the lake in our village. Seeing the water-filled lake brings us a deep sense of relief!”

The residents of Sabarkantha’s Kanai village shared their sentiments.

Mahendi Ali, Habib Ali, Valikaka, and others are very aware of water-related issues in their village. The entire village is committed to the well-being of the lake, which is a rarity. With the help of respected Shri Krishnakant Mehta and Indira Mehta, we were instrumental in deepening the Vadu lake of this village.

In Kanai, one hits the stone layer 125 to 150 feet under the ground. But if the aquifers up to 150 feet get recharged, it would enable farmers to take two crops in a year. Water is also required for cattle rearing. The village well and borewell are the two primary sources of water. But these two will have water only if the lakes are filled with water.

We deepened one lake, but the village had made efforts to deepen its five lakes and link them too. The community has used its inherent wisdom to make use of available resources to conserve water efficiently.

I wonder why this village has not received media attention yet. Well, we have made a documentary on the water conservation efforts in Kanai village. It will be ready to air within ten days. The documentary highlights some fantastic work done by a very aware village community.

The lake VSSM  helped deepen and filled up to the brim; as a result, the 200 feet deep borewell has recharged. In fact, the water flows back from the borewell.

The filled-up lake is a sight to behold, and so is the well with water filled up to an arm’s length.

This year we have dredged three lakes in Sabarkantha and 40 lakes in Banaskantha. Next year we plan to deepen equal numbers in both these districts. I am sure the almighty will help us accomplish our goal

 “વરસાદ સરસ વરસે કે અમે અમારા ગામના તળાવે પહોંચી જઈએ. તળાવ ભરાયેલા જોઈને અમારા જીવને નિરાંત થાય…”આ વાત કરી સાબરકાંઠાના હીંમતનગરના કનાઈગામના લોકોએ.મહેંદીઅલી, હબીબઅલી, વલીકાકા વગેરે જેવા નાગરિકો પાણીને લઈને સખત જાગૃત. આમ તો તળાવની જબરજસ્ત ભૂખ હોય એવું આ ગામ. બહુ ઓછા ગામો પાણીને લઈને આવા જાગૃત હોય. અમે આ ગામનું વડુ તળાવ ઊંડુ કરવાનુ અમારા આદરણીય ક્રિષ્ણકાંત મહેતા અને ઈન્દિરા મહેતાની મદદથી કર્યું.

ગામના ભૂગર્ભમાં 125 થી 150 ફૂટે કાળો પથ્થર આવી જાય. આમ જમીનમાં 150 ફૂટ સુધીના સ્તર પાણીથી ભરેલા હોય તો ગામલોકો ખેતીમાં બે પાક લઈ શકે. વળી પશુપાલન માટે પાણી મળી રહે. ગામમાં કૂવા અને બોરવેલ ખેતી અને પશુપાલનનો મુખ્ય આધાર. વળી આ કુવા અને બોરવેલ ગામના તળાવો જો સરસ ભરાયેલા રહે તો જ પાણીવાળા રહે. 

અમે તળાવ ગાળ્યું. પણ ગામે સ્વયંમ ભૂ પણ પ્રયત્નો કરીને ગામના પાંચ તળાવો ઊંડા કર્યા વળી પાછા એ બધા લીંક કર્યા. પોતાની સૂઝબૂઝથી પાણીને લઈને આ ગામે ઉત્તમ કાર્ય કર્યું છે.મીડિયાના ધ્યાને આ ગામની વાત કેમ નથી આવી સવાલ છે, ખેર અમે એક આખી ડોક્યુમેન્ટ્રી કનાઈના જળસંચયના કાર્યોને લઈને બનાવી રહ્યા છીએ. દસેક દિવસમાં એ બધુ તમારી સામે મુકીશ. આ ડોક્યુમેન્ટ્રીમાં અદભૂત વાતો કરી છે.. કોઈ ગામ પાણી માટે આવું જાગૃત હોય એ જ મને તો નવાઈ લાગે છે.

અમે તળાવ ગાળ્યું ને એ સરસ ભરાયું. એના લીધે ગામના બોરવેલ જે 200 ફૂટ ઊંડા છે તે રીચાર્જ થયા. એક બોરવેલમાંથી તો પાણી બેક મારે. એટલે કે સ્વંયમભૂ બહાર નીકળે. આમ આખો બોરવેલ રીચાર્જ થઈ ગયો… 

મજાનું ગામ…અમે જે તળાવ ખોદ્યું એ ભરાયું એ તમે પણ જુઓ.. ને કુવા પણ હાથેથી પાણી લઈ શકાય એટલી હદે રીચાર્જ થયા. વધારે વાત ડોક્યુમેન્ટ્રીમાં કરીશું. 

આ વર્ષે સાબરકાંઠામાં ત્રણ તળાવ ગાળ્યા. બનાસકાંઠામાં 40 તળાવો ઊંડા કર્યા. આવતા વર્ષે સાબરકાંઠામાં પણ બનાસકાંઠામાં કરીએ એટલા તળાવ કરવાનો લક્ષાંત છે.. બસ ઈશ્વર આ મનોરથ પૂર્ણ કરાવે…

North Gujarat is a rain deficit and water-starved region. As a result, farmers have been sinking borewells to draw groundwater, and over-exploitation of the groundwater reserves has depleted the water tables to an all-time low. Yet, we have never cared about recharging the borewells nor maintained our common water sources. And the underground water levels keep depleting each year.

Recently, I was in Banaskantha to monitor the  post-rains water levels in the lakes we had deepened. Many lakes have filled up. The community members who understand the gravity of the water situation said, “Ben, we cannot say this publicly, but this region needs frequent floods. The 2015 and 2017 floods considerably recharged the groundwater levels of our region. The Banas river remained full to its banks for a week. The regions around it experienced a rise in their groundwater tables. Even the regions in the stormwater path had shown an increase in water levels.”

“But there were losses worth crores during the floods,” I responded, a little surprised at the statement.

“Wouldn’t that loss happen even when we will run out of water? We will have to migrate to cities. Isn’t it better if the water tables rise least in some way?”

We should not be hoping for floods but at least make efficient management to capture every drop of rain.

The Sujalam Sufalam‘s kuccha canal from Kadana to Banaskantha is almost 330 kilometers long. If provisions are made to keep it full during the four months of monsoon, it would considerably impact the groundwater levels. Many of the regions through which the canal passes do not have the passage of the Sardar Sarovar Canal.

And not just the canal, even the lakes that are linked with Narmada (Sardar Sarovar) Canal should be filled up with Narmada waters during monsoons. It will help increase the groundwater level.

Well, we have constantly been writing to the government about all the required measures; hopefully, that change will happen sooner than later. But, until then, let us do all that is within our powers. 

Our ongoing campaign of deepening the lakes in Banaskanth is progressing steadily. This year we deepened lakes in 40 villages, of which Deesa‘s Sandiya village is one. The image of the lake shared here shows its puddle-like form. We deepened it this year; fortunately, the rains have been good so far, filling up the lake and allowing the water to seep underground, which has been our intent.

ઉત્તર ગુજરાતમાં ભૂગર્ભજળ જોખમી સ્થિતિએ પહોંચ્યાના અહેવાલો તમે વખતો વખત વાંચતા હશો.. વળી વરસાદ પણ આ વિસ્તારમાં પ્રણામ ઠીક ઠીક પડે ને જે પડે તેનું બધુ પાણી ભૂગર્ભમાં પાછુ નાખવાનું પ્રમાણમાં ઝાઝુ ન થાય. આમ ભૂગર્ભ જળની સ્થિતિ દિવસે દિવસે બત્તર થતી જાય.

હમણાં બનાસકાંઠા ગઈ મૂળ આ વર્ષે જે વરસાદ થયો ને એના લીધે અમે જે તળાવો ખોદાવ્યા હતા તેમાંના ઘણા ભરાયા હતા તે જોવા માટે. ત્યારે કેટલાક ગામોના પાણીની સ્થિતિ સમજનાર લોકોએ તો કહ્યું, “બેન જાહેરમાં ન બોલાય પણ સાચે આપણા વિસ્તારમાં એક પુર આવે એની જરૃર છે. 2015 અને 2017માં પૂર આવ્યું ત્યારે અમારા તળ ખાસ્સા રીચાર્જ થઈ ગયેલા. બનાસ નદી બે કાંઠે અઠવાડિયું ચાલેલી.. એના લીધેય બનાસ નદી આસપાસના તળ ખાસ્સા ઉપર આવેલા ને જ્યાંથી રેલ ચાલી ત્યાંય ફાયદો થયો..”

ભાઈની વાત સાંભળી નવાઈ લાગી. મે કહ્યું “પણ રેલમાં જાન માલનું કરોડો રૃપિયાનું નુકશાન થાય એનું શું?”

“એ નુકશાની તો પાણી ખતમ થઈ જશે તોય થવાની જ ને? તળ ખાલી થશે પછી શહેરોમાં ના ગમે તોય જવું પડશે એના કરતા તળમાં પાણી આવે એ અગત્યનું..”

પુરની આશા તો ન રાખીયે.. પણ હા પાણીના આયોજનનું ચોક્કસ થઈ શકે. 

સુજલામ સુફલામ કાચી કેનાલ કડાણાથી નીકળી ને બનાસકાંઠા સુધી લગભગ 330 કી.મી. જેટલી. આમાં ચોમાસા દરમ્યાન સતત ચાર મહિના ને એ પછી પણ શક્ય હોય તો પાણી આપવામાં આવે તો પણ ઘણો ફાયદો થાય. આ કેનાલ જે વિસ્તારમાંથી પસાર થાય છે એમાંના ઘણા વિસ્તારોને નર્મદા નહેરનો ફાયદો નથી મળતો..

વળી જે તળાવો નર્મદા કેનાલ કે પાઈપલાઈન સાથે લીંક કર્યા છે તે તળાવો પણ આ સીઝનમાં શક્ય ભરવાનું પણ કરવું જોઈએ એ થાય તોય ઘણો ફાયદો થાય..

ખેર આ બધા માટે અમે સરકારમાં સતત લખ્યા કરીએ એ બધુંયે ધીમે ધીમે થશે.. 

પણ ત્યાં સુધી આપણા હાથમાં છે તે કરીએ..

અમે બનાસકાંઠામાં તળાવો ઊંડા કરીએ. આ વર્ષે 40 તળાવો કર્યા. જેમાંનું ડિસાનું સાંડિયાગામનું તળાવ. જ્યારે આ તળાવ ખોદાતું હતું એ વખતે ત્યાં ગઈ તો એક નાનુ ખાબોચિયું જ જોઈ લો.. તમે પણ ફોટોમાં એ જોઈ શકશો..

અમે ખોદ્યું ને મેઘરાજાએ મહેર કરી એના લીધે એ સરસ ભરાયું.ખોદાયું હતું એટલે પાણી પણ જમીનમં ઝટ ઉતરી રહ્યું છે જે તળાવો ગળાવવાનો અમારો આશય પણ છે..

જ્વેલેક્ષ ઈન્ડિયા પ્રા.લી. આદરણીય શ્રી પિયુશભાઈ કોઠારીએ આ કાર્ય માટે અમને આર્થિક સહયોગ કર્યો અલબત જ્વેલેક્ષની મદદથી અમે આ વર્ષે (2022) બનાસકાંઠામાં 9 તળાવો ગળાવ્યા.. પિષયુભાઈ થેક્યુ તમે સતત મદદ કરો છો માટે આ પ્રકારના કાર્યો અમે વેગથી કરી શકીએ છીએ..

Since a very long time,  I have written about the probabilities of  accomplishing seemingly unachievable tasks  when the officer in charge is empathetic and willing to take proactive steps.

One such officer is the District Collector of Kheda Shri Bachani.

Whenever I am traveling across Kheda, when a situation requiring government intervention comes to our knowledge, I immediately bring it to the notice of Shri Bachani Saheb, and the issue gets resolved at the earliest!

VSSM shared details of the nomadic families living in Kheda who do not have a ration card, electricity connection to their homes, or a residential plot. Shri Bachani Saheb called a meeting of concerned officials and asked them to act at the earliest and finish these pending tasks.

The District Development Officer Shri Mehul Dave also shares similar sensibilities;  as a result they quickly resolve the issues.

At last, the dust accumulated over the long pending files has finally shaken off due to Bachani Saheb and Dave Saheb’s enthusiasm. While some families have received plots, many now have an electric connection at their hutments.

VSSM also came into contact with destitute elderlies who did not have Antyoday cards, nor did they receive the pension for the elderly. After we drew authorities’ attention to the plight of many such elderly,  Pasi Maa and Ramankaka immediately received a ration card that could help them access rations from the PDS store. We provide them a monthly ration kit, but grains from the ration shop provide a buffer.

Pasi Maa stays in Dabhaan; she does not have a pucca home but aspires to reside in a house of her own before she bids this world a final goodbye. Therefore, we have decided to build her home and requested Bachani Saheb to allot her a plot at the earliest.

7 devipujak families of Matar have been allotted plots, and their homes have received electricity connections. The children are happy at the sight of their homes being lit.

The authorities of Kheda district are geared up to follow instructions given to them. The phrase that the family is a reflection of the head of the family character is accurate in the case of Kheda district.

એક અધિકારી ઈચ્છે તો શું કરી શકે એ બાબતે અહીંયા ખુબ લખ્યું છે… 

આજે એવા જ એક અધિકારી એટલે ખેડા જિલ્લાના કલકેટર શ્રી બાચાણી સાહેબની વાત કરવાની છું.

એમના જિલ્લામાં પ્રવાસ કરતી હોવું ને કોઈ એવી બાબત ધ્યાને આવે કે જેમાં સરકાર કશુંક કરી શકે તે બાબતે બાચાણી સાહેબનું ધ્યાન દોરીએ કે એ કામ ફટાફટ થઈ જાય.

ખેડામાં રહેતી વિચરતી જાતિઓ કે જેમની પાસે હજુ વિજળીની સુવિધા નથી જેમને રહેવા પ્લોટ ફળવાયા નથી. જેમની પાસે રેશનકાર્ડ જેવી પ્રાથમીક સુવિધા નથી. આ બધાની વિગત અમે સાહેબને આપી ને એમણે પોતાની અધ્યક્ષા હેઠળ તમામ લાગતા વળગતા અધિકારીઓ સાથે બેઠક કરી સૌને આ કાર્ય સત્વરે પૂર્ણ કરવા સૂચના આપી. 

એમને સાથ આપ્યો ડીડીઓ શ્રી મહુલ દવે સાહેબે.. એ પણ અમારા કામોમાં ખુબ લાગણી રાખે..

ઘણા પરિવારોની અરજીઓ જે વર્ષોથી પડતર હતી તે અરજીઓ પરની ધૂળ બાચાણી અને દવે સાહેબની લાગણીથી ખંખરાઈ. કટેલાકને પ્લોટ ફળવાઈ ગયા તો ઘણાના ઘરે વિજળી પણ આવી. 

અમારા ધ્યાને એવા માવતરો આવ્યા કે જેઓ નિરાધાર હતા. જેમની પાસે અંત્યોદય કાર્ડ નહીં. ના વૃદ્ધ પેન્શન એમને મળે.આ અંગે રજૂઆત કરાતા પસીમા અને રમણકાકાને તો તુરત પેન્શન ને અનાજ મળે એવું કાર્ડ પણ મળી ગયું. અમે આ માવતરોને દર મહિને રાશનકીટ આપીયે પણ  પેન્શન ને અનાજની મદદ મળે તો આ માવતરોને ટેકો રહે..

.ખેર પસીમા જેઓ ડભાણમાં રહે. એમની પાસે ઘર નથી એમને પણ સત્વરે પ્લોટ આપવા સાહેબને વિનતી કરી છે. મૂળ અમારે એમને ઘર બાંધી આપવું છે. એમની ઈચ્છા મરતા પહેલાં પોતાના ઘરમાં રહેવાની ને એ પૂરી કરવાનું અમે નક્કી કર્યું છે.

માતરના આંતરોલીમાં 7 દેવીપૂજક પરિવારોને પ્લોટ ફળવાયા સાથે પહેલીવાર એમના ઘરમાં અજવાળુ થયું. કેટલાય બાળકો ઘરમાં વિજળી મળતા રાજી રાજી થયા.

ટૂંકમાં કલેક્ટર શ્રીની લાગણીના લીધે આખુ તંત્ર સરસ મદદ કરી રહ્યું છે.. ખરેખર ઘરનો વડો જેવો હોય તેવું આખુ ઘર હોય એવું ખેડાના વહીવટીતંત્રને જોઈને લાગે છે.

આભાર બાચણી સાહેબ, દવે સાહેબ.. ને સમગ્ર ખેડા જિલ્લાની ટીમ.. તમારી પાસેથી અન્ય જિલ્લાનું વહીવટીતંત્ર શીખે એમ ઈચ્છીએ…

 “Ben, you set up a kiosk to retail fashion accessories. When you are  financially independent you will not require to stretch your hands before your husband.” The women of Kheda’s Sandhana shared this piece of advice with me.

They were 100% correct, and I liked them for their understanding.

Financial independence for women is needed in this time and age. Despite having the required skills, qualifications and understanding many women are unable to step out of their homes because their husbands would not want them to. But, financial independence is for one’s security. In case of an untoward situation, it is financial independence that will allow the women to face the challenges with respect and determination. They would not require to start from scratch. Education and economic independence thus become critical.

“Stretching hands before the husband even for 5 rupees is humiliating at times. If we are earning, we can spend our money wherever we want to…” Bharti tells me.

Women stepping not of the house to make a living might be a recent scenario for many communities, but the kangasiya women have led a financially independent life for generations.

“However our husband would be, we do not go complaining to our parents’, when we have our earnings there is no need to do so. When we are the earning members, do not mind tolerating the  husband!” Gauriben shared a very strong opinion.

While Gauri Ma remarked, “From an early age, we begin to groom our daughters on business skills. As a result, they are better prepared just in case they are faced with any crisis.

The kangasiya women are a truly empowered lot. So ideally,  each woman, whether she is a mother or  mother-in-law should provide space to their daughters and daughters-in law to secure financial independence. It is only then they would be able to face the world with their head held high.

” બેન તમે બોરિયા, બકલ ટૂંકમાં હોઝીયરીના સામાનની એક દુકાન કરી લો.. જાતે કમાતા હશો ને તો તમારે તમારા ઘરવાળા પાહેણ હાથ લાંબો નહીં કરવો પડે.. “

ખેડાના સંધાણામાં રહેતી કાંગસિયા બહેનોએ મને આ શીખ આપી..

મને એમની વાત ખુબ ગમી કારણ એ સો ટકા સાચી હતી..

દરેક સ્ત્રી પગભર થાય એ આજના સમયની જરૃર.  હું ઘણી એવી બહેનોને મળી છું જે ખુબ સરસ ભણી છે આવડત એનામાં ખુબ છે. કામ કરવાની ઈચ્છા છે છતાં ઘરવાળા ના પાડે છે માટે એ ઘર બહાર જઈ નથી શકતી.  કમાવવું- પોતાના પગ પર ઊભા રહેવું કોઈને બતાવવા માટે નહીં પણ ન કરે નારાયણ પણ ઘરમાં કોઈ મુસીબત આવી પડી કે એવા સંજોગો ઊભા થયા કે એને કમાવવું પડે ત્યારે વર્ષો પછી એકડ એકથી શરૃ કરવું ક્યારેક ઘણું મુશ્કેલ બની જતું હોય છે.. એટલે ખાસ થાય ભણીને પગભર થવું..

મને ભારતીબહેને તો કહ્યું.” પાંચ પાંચ રૃપિયા માટે ઘરવાળા હામે હાથ લાંબો કરવો એના કરતા આપણે કમાતા હોઈયે તો એની હાડાબારી નહીં. આપણા પૈસા આપણને ગમે એમ વાપરીએ.. “

આપણા ત્યાં બહેનો છેલ્લા થોડા વર્ષોથી ઘર બહાર નીકળી કમાતી થઈ. પણ વિચરતી જાતિમાંના કાંગસિયા સમાજની બહેનો તો સદીઓથી કમાય છે.. 

ગૌરીબહેન કહે, “બેન અમારો ઘરવાળો ગમે એવો હોય અમે એની ફરિયાદ લઈને પિયર ન જઈએ.. એને અમે નભાઈ લઈએ.. આપણે કમાતા હોઈએ પછી વાંધો શું….”

કેવી ગજબ વાત… 

તો ગૌરી માએ કહ્યું, અમે નાનપણથી દીકરીઓને વેપાર કરતા શીખવીએ જેથી ગમે એવી વિપદા આવે એ પોતાનું કરી લે…

કાંગસિયા બહેનો સ્ત્રી સશક્તિકરણનું સાચુ ઉ.દા. લાગી..

બહેનોએ બહુ ભાવથી મને બંગડી પહેરાવી… આમ તો એમની આમાં માસ્ટરી.. જરાય દર્દ વગર એ બંગડી પહેરાવી શકે..

દરેક સ્ત્રી, દરેક મા અને સાસુ પોતાની દીકરીઓને વહુઓને પગભર થવા મોકળાશ આપે એ ઈચ્છનીય… તાકી એ દુનિયા સામે ખુદ્દારીથી ઊભી રહી શકે…

 An aware village getting a sensible individual as its sarpanch is always a good fortune!

Naranbhai is one such sensible and aware Sarpanch of Deesa’s Soyla village. The village has two lakes, and groundwater levels have depleted at an alarming rate. The farmers have no choice but to continue going deeper until they can no longer drill into the earth. After which, the borewell fails. Getting a new borewell drilled involves enormous expenses, which most farmers cannot afford.

The community is aware that we will need to deepen the lakes to replenish the water we have pulled out of the earth. As soon as they learnt about our water conservation efforts in Banaskantha, they got in touch with us, accepted all the preconditions and immediately got to work.

Jewelex Foundation’s Shri Piyushbhai Kothari, who remains associated with many of our activities, supported the dredging of this lake. As a result, we have this wide and beautiful lake full to the brim as a result of very good monsoon this year. And because the lake was freshly deepened a lot of water seeped into the ground.

VSSM, in partnership with the forest department, plans to plant and raise 8000 trees in Soyla. 4000 of these trees have already been planted. VSSM will make arrangements for drip irrigation and appoint a Vriksh Mitr to care for and nurture these trees. the remaining 4000 trees will be planted within a fortnight.

“We want to win the first prize in raising tree…” Soyla’s Devchandbhai had shared enthusiastically, reflecting the passion of the community.

If we had similar experiences with other villages, the parched earth would soon turn lush green.

જાગૃત ગામને જાગૃત સરપંચ મળવા એ સદનસીબ..

ડિસાનું સોયલા. નારણભાઈ ત્યાંના આવા જ જાગૃત સરપંચ. ગામમાં બે જ તળાવ. તળ દર વર્ષે નીચે જતા જાય. બોરવેલ ડચકા લે એટલે ખેડૂતો કોલમ ઉતારતા જાય અને છેવટે કોલમથી પણ કામ ન થાય ને બોરવેલ ફેઈલ.. 

ફરી નવો બોરવેલ ને એ માટે મસમોટા ખર્ચા. 

ધરતીમાંથી ઉલેચેલું પાણી પાછુ આપવાનું માધ્યમ તળાવો એવું નારણભાઈને ગામના સૌ જાણે. એટલે જ એમને જ્યારે ખ્યાલ આવ્યો કે અમે બનાસકાંઠામાં તળાવો ઊંડા કરીએ એટલે એમણે તુરત અમારો સંપર્ક કર્યો ને માટી ઉપાડવાની અમારી શરત સાથે ત્યાં તળાવ ગળાવવાનું શરૃ કર્યું.

VSSM  સાથે સંકળાયેલા અમારા પ્રિયજન પિયુષભાઈ કોઠારી જવેલેક્ષ ફાઉન્ડેશને અમને આ કાર્ય માટે સહયોગ કર્યો અને સરસ તળાવ ગળાયું.

આ વર્ષે મેઘરાજાએ મહેર કરીને ગામ તળાવ ભરાયું. ગામલોકો રાજી રાજી.. તળાવ ખોદાયેલું હતું આથી ઘણું પાણી જમીનમાં ઝડપથી ઉતર્યું પણ ખરા.

સોયલામાં જ જંગલવિભાગ અને  VSSM ની મદદથી લગભગ આઠેક હજારથી વધારે વૃક્ષો ઉછેરવાનું પણ અમે કરીશું. જેમાંના 4000 વૃક્ષો તો જંગલવિભાગે વાવી પણ દીધા. અમે ત્યાં ડ્રીપ અને વૃક્ષોની સંભાળ રાખનારને માસીક વેતન પણ આપીશું. જેથી વૃક્ષો બરાબર જળવાય. બીજા ચાર હજાર વૃક્ષોનું વાવેતર પણ પંદર દિવસમાં પૂર્ણ થાય તેવું કરીશું.

પણ વૃક્ષો માટે પણ ગામના સૌને ઘણી મમતા. ગામના દેવચંદભાઈએ તો કહ્યું અમારે વૃક્ષ ઉછેરમાં પહેલો નંબર લેવો છે. બસ આ જુસ્સો દરેક ગામમાં ઊભો થાય તો મા ધરા હરિયાળી અને પાણીદાર થઈ જાય એ નક્કી…
