VSSM were blessed with the opportunity to marry 2 daughters of Vadia

To wed or get engaged saves the daughters of this particular village from a life of hell. Here is an opportunity to contribute to the weddings of such daughters!

Vadia village of Banaskantha has been known for unpleasant reasons. It is not only the girls; parents are also educating their sons. As a result, many boys have graduated from college.

Getting their daughters married has become a custom now. Many families even dread the name Vadia. Hence they have relocated to other places. Two daughters belonging to such families recently got married. The economic condition of these families is deplorable; many tried to lure them into sending their daughters into prostitution (which was the traditional occupation of this village). But the families remained determined, “how can we call ourselves parents if we push our girls into a life of hell?” was their firm reply.

If parents of all of Vadia’s daughters could think like so, the conditions would improve only for the better.

Well, we were instrumental in getting the two daughters married. US-based respected Shri Rameshbhai Shah provided huge support to meet the expenses of the weddings. We are grateful to Shri Shah for the support he has provided.

VSSM’s team member Rameshbhai has pledged to make sure each daughter of Vadia is married; we pray for his pledge to come true. Ramesbhai worked tirelessly during this wedding.

We wish both these daughters happiness and prosperity in their lives.

દિકરીઓના લગ્નમાં નિમિત્ત બનવું એ તો લાહવો. પાછુ એવા ગામની દીકરીઓ કે જ્યાં લગ્ન કે સગાઈ એ દિકરીઓને નર્કાગારમાં જતી રોકે.

બનાસકાંઠાનું વાડિયા. ત્યાંની શકલ હવે બદલાઈ રહી છે. પરિવારો દીકરીઓને સાથે સાથે છોકરાંઓને ભણાવી રહ્યા છે. કેટલાક દીકરાઓ ગ્રેજ્યુએટ પણ થયા.

દીકરીઓના લગ્નોની જાણે હવે પરંપરા બની ગઈ. ઘણા પરિવારોને તો વાડિયા નામથી પણ છોછ છે એટલે ગામ છોડી દીધું છે. આવા જ પરિવારોની બે દિકરીઓના લગ્ન હમણાં થયા. આર્થિક સ્થિતિ પરિવારની નબળી. મજૂરી કરીને નભે. લાલચો ઢગલો. દીકરી દેહવ્યાપાર કરે એમાં આપણે ક્યાં મેણું હોય એવું લોકો કહે. પણ આ પરિવારોએ કહ્યું દીકરી તો સાસરે શોભે. એને જાતે કરીને નર્કમાં ધકેલવાનું અમે કરીએ તો મા-બાપ શેના?

બસ આટલી વાત વાડિયાના દરેક મા-બાપ સમજી જાય તો સ્થિતિ બદલાઈ જાય..

ખેર આ દિકરીઓના લગ્નમાં અમે નિમિત્ત બન્યા. અમેરિકામાં રહેતા આદરણીય રમેશભાઈ શાહે આ બે દિકરીઓના લગ્ન ખર્ચમાં ઘણી મોટી મદદ કરી. તેમનો ઘણો આભાર.

અમારા કાર્યકર રમેશભાઈ ખડેપગે રહ્યા. તેમની નેમ ગામની દરેક દિકરી પરણે તેવી.. તેમની આ ભાવનાને પણ પ્રણામ.

બાકી બેય દિકરીઓ સુખી થાય તેવી શુભભાવના…

Vadia, a village tucked in a remote corner of Banaskantha has always been in limelight for numerous wrong reasons. Since more than a decade VSSM has been striving to make Vadia known for the right reasons. The efforts are focused to positively transform the ground realities of Vadia.

Vadia has been practising the traditional occupation of prostitution for more than 6 decades. The occupation is forced upon the girls once they achieve puberty. However, if the girl decides to get married or is engaged the family does not initiate her into prostitution. VSSM encourages parents of the daughters of Vadia to find a suitable match for the girls and get them married. This year the village hosted weddings of 5 girls. VSSM decided that each of the trousseaus will also include a buffalo so that the girls enjoy some financial independence in their marital home. However, we were unable to gift the buffaloes at the wedding because of its high cost during the period. “The buffaloes are cheapest during Bhadarvo, 11th month of Gujarati calendar!!” Nagjibhai, a community leader from Tharad had advised.

Once Bhadarvo arrived, VSSM’s Shardaben and Nagjibhai persevered to find 5 good buffaloes.

On 23rd September, in the presence of our dear Shri Lal Uncle, we organized a program to gift the buffaloes to these daughters.

We will forever remain grateful to respected Shri Chandrakantbhai Gogari, respected Shri Morari Bapu and respected Sarojben for the support they have provided. It is their encouraging support that has enabled us to achieve some unimaginable goals in Vadia. They have remained instrumental to ensure that hope and happiness reaches the thresholds of Vadia.

બનાસકાંઠાનું વાડિયા બહુ જુદી રીતે પંકાયેલું ગામ.
અમે ગામની સીકલ બદલાય એ માટે પ્રયત્નરત..

ગામમાં રહેતા #સરાણિયા પરિવારોમાં એક નોખો રિવાજ.
જે દીકરીની સગાઈ કે લગ્ન થાય તે દેહવ્યાપારરૃપી નર્કાગારમાં ધકેલાય નહીં. અમે ગામની દીકરીઓ પરણે એને પ્રોત્સાહન આપીએ.આ વર્ષે કરેલા પાંચ લગ્નોમાં દીકરીઓને કરિયારની સાથે સાથે તે રોજી રોટી રળી શકે તે માટે ધામેણું આપવાનું પણ કહેલું.

થરાદ વિસ્તારના આગેવાન નાગજીભાઈ કહે,
‘ભેંસો તો ભાદરવા મહિનામાં સસ્તી મળે’
એટલે અમે લગ્ન વેળા અન્ય કરિયાવર સાથે ભેંસો નહોતી આપી. પણ મંડપમાં ભાદરવામાં ભેંસો આપવાની જાહેરાત કરેલી.
નાગજીભાઈ અને કાર્યકર શારદાબહેને લગ્ન કરેલી પાંચે દીકરીઓ માટે સરસ ભેંસો શોધી કાઢી.

ગઈ કાલે અમે આ ભેંસ અર્ણપ અમારા પ્રિય લાલ અંકલની હાજરીમાં કાર્યક્રમ કર્યો.

Once again the air in Vadia plumps up to the beat of dhols …

“Ben, by marrying off two of my daughters today and assigning one in your care, I have fulfilled my promise given to you. I have no worries. Even death  does not scare me now.”  Rameshbhai’s eyes welled up as he talked to me today at his daughter Krishna’s marriage ceremony.

Vadia, a village whose traditional occupation is absolutely unaccepted seldom treats its daughters with respect and care, but once the daughter is married or engaged she is never forced into the hellish traditional occupation of prostitution.
Rameshbhai had promised me to never force his daughters into prostitution when he first met me in 2005. I had the right to correct him because he considers me his sister.
The pimps active in Vadia tried their level best to lure Rameshbhai into the trap, but he remained undeterred like a  rock. Both his kidneys failed, the medications pushed him to the brink of survival. VSSM’s Shardaben and his elder brother Bababhai worked tirelessly to bring him to Ahmedabad’s Civil Hospital and get his kidney transplanted. Right now, he is on medication that is taken managed  by VSSM’s President Shri Madhavbhai  Ramanuj.
Apart from the physical trauma due to such life threatening ailment Rameshbhai also passed through severe mental trauma, but even under such dire circumstances he remained undeterred in his commitment to protect his daughters and ensured they get  married.
The ceremony wouldn’t have been possible without the support of VSSM’s largehearted family. The entire expense of the wedding ceremony was supported by respected Shri Morari Bapu. The kitchenware in the trousseau has been gifted by Shri Somabhai Patel. We have provided all that you can see in the pictures to Krishna and Kalpana. Apart from this,  to help them earn and live with dignity we have committed a buffalo each to both of them.
The Sarpanch of Khanpur Shri Nagjibhai has been assigned with the responsibility of finding a good buffalos. The costs of buffalo are very high currently hence, we plan to purchase them once the prices come down.
I am grateful to all those who stood with us and have wished well for Vadia.
Respected Bapu, all of these wouldn’t have been possible without your support. I am grateful for your support.
Shardaben, our backbone for Vadia who constantly worries for the community needs to be commended for her untiring efforts in Vadia.
Rameshbhai, I respect your commitment to fulfil the promise you gave me. I wish that each girl in Vadia is blessed with a father who shares your sentiments!!
વાડિયા માં એકવાર ફેર ઢોલ ઢમક્યાં…..
‘બેન મે આપેલું વચન આજે પૂરું કર્યું. મારી બે દીકરી પરણાવી અને એક તમને સોંપી. હવે હાલ મોત આવે તોય મને ચિંતા નથી ‘
વાડિયાના રમેશભાઈ સરાણિયાની આંખો આજે દીકરી ક્રિષ્ના ના લગન વખતે આ કહેતા કહેતા ભરાઈ આવી.
વાડિયા જ્યાની પરંપરા દીકરીઓ માટે ક્યારેક ના સ્વીકારાય એવી. દેહવ્યાપારના કલંક ગામની દીકરીઓના માથે લખાતા હોય એવા વાડિયામાં જે દીકરીની એક વખત લગ્ન કે સગાઈ થાય એ ક્યારેય આવા નર્કમાં ધકેલાતી નથી.
રમેશભાઈને ૨૦૦૫ માં મળેલી અને એ વખતે જ એમણે પોતાની દીકરીઓને આ નર્કાગાર માં નહિ ધકેલવાનું વચન આપેલું. મને બહેન માને એટલે થોડા વિશેષ અધિકાર ભાવ પણ બંને તરફ હોય… પણ છેવટે તો બધુંયે હકારાત્મક.
કેવી લાલચો સામે આવી પણ એ બધાને એમણે ઠોકર મારી.
બે કિડની બગડી. દવામાં ખૂબ ખર્ચ થયો. Vssm ના કાર્યકર શારદાબેન અને મોટાભાઈ બાબા ભાઈ સાથે રમેશભાઈ ને માંડ કિડની હોસ્પિટલ લાવ્યા અને કિડની ટ્રાન્સપ્લાન્ટ કરાવ્યું. હાલે દવા ચાલે પણ દવાનું બધું vssm ના પ્રમુખ માધવભાઇ રામાનુજ સાચવે.
આર્થિક રીતે કમર તૂટી ગયેલી. ત્યારેય આવેલી લાલચોથી એ પર રહ્યા અને ખરા અર્થમાં એમણે દીકરીના બાપને છાજે એમ દીકરીઓને સંસાર મંડાવ્યા.
લગ્ન ખર્ચમાં સહયોગ પૂજ્ય મોરારી બાપુ એ આપ્યો. દીકરીને ભેટમાં વાસણ માટે સોમાભાઈ પટેલ સહયોગ આપ્યો. તેમનો આભાર વ્યક્ત કરું છું. દીકરી ક્રિષ્ના અને કલ્પનાને લગનમાં ફોટોમાં દેખાય છે એ સાધન સામગ્રી તો આપી. સાથે બેય દીકરીઓ સાસરીમાં સ્વમાનભેર જીવી શકે એ માટે બેયને ભેંસ આપવાનું વચન પણ આપ્યું.
ખાનપુરના સરપંચ નાગજી ભાઈને ભેંસ લાવવાની જવાબદારી સોંપી. હાલ ભેંસોની કિંમત વધારે છે ઓછી થતાં જ બેય દીકરીના ઘરે ભેંસ બંધાશે.
વાડિયા માં બદલાવ માટે મથતા સૌ સ્વજનો પાસે આજે રાજીપો વ્યક્ત કરું છું.
પૂજય બાપુ નો આભાર માનું છું એમની મદદ વગર આ બધું અસંભવ હતું…
અમારા કાર્યકર શારદાબેન સતત વાડિયા માં રહેતા માણસોની ચિંતા સેવે અને એમને મદદ કરે એમની લાગણી ને પ્રણામ.
અને રમેશભાઈ તમે ભાઈ તરીકે આપેલું વચન નિભાવ્યું એનો આનંદ.. સાથે વાડિયા ની તમામ દીકરીના બાપ તમારા જેવા થાય એવી આશા રાખું છું.

A gift that proved to be a great source of income at Vadia

A few months Vadia – a village, married two more daughters and VSSM made the arrangements for the same. We had decided to gift these girls buffaloes in their trousseau/weeding gift (કરિયાવર) along with other house-hold things. Plans were made to buy and gift the buffaloes at the weeding itself, but a considerate farmer Nagjibhai informed us that the rates of buffaloes drop during  Bhadarvo/September-October. He advised us to buy the buffaloes at that time. We listened to his advice and waited for couple of months. Once the rates dropped in the month of Bhadarvo we went ahead and gifted the buffaloes.
The buffaloes have helped elevate the income in the family. The girls keep small portion of milk for personal consumption and bring rest to the cooperative dairy in the village. The family has begun experiencing benefits of added income.
These weddings received lots of gifts from our well-wishing friends and I had not found time to write to you all on how the girls are doing after marriage. Last week I was in Vadia and happened to meet these daughters who proudly showed me their cattle while sharing about their life post marriage!!
We are all set to marry two more girls in next couple of months. They too will be married with all the rituals and likes.
ગુજરાતીમાં રૂપાંતર
વાડીયામાં બે દીકરીઓના લગ્ન થોડા મહિના પહેલા કર્યા. દીકરીઓને કરિયાવર માં ઘરનો સામાન અને અન્ય વસ્તુની સાથે સાથે ભેંસો આપવાનું નક્કી કરેલું.
લગ્ન વખતે ભેંસો આપવી હતી પણ થરાદના ખાનપુરના ખેડૂત નાગજીભાઈ એ કહ્યું, ‘બેન ભાદરવા મહિનામાં ભેંસ આપીએ થોડી સસ્તી મળશે.’ બસ નાગજીભાઈની વાત માની. ને ભાદરવો શરૂ થાય એ પહેલા દીકરીઓને ભેંસો આપી.
બેય દીકરીઓ ભેંસોનું દૂધ ખાવા પૂરતું પાસે રાખી બાકી ડેરીમાં ભરાવે છે.
ઘરમાં સમૃદ્ધિ વધી છે.
લગ્ન વખતે ઘણા મિત્રો એ મદદ કરેલી એમને દીકરીઓને આપવાની આ ભેટ વિશે જણાવવાનું રહી ગયેલું એટલે આજે લખી રહી છું.
ગયા અઠવાડિયે વાડિયા ગઈ ત્યારે દીકરીઓને એમના ઘર સંસાર વિશે પૂછ્યું અને એમની ભેંસોને એમણે બતાવી. તે તમનેય બતાવું છું.
આગામી મહિના દોઢ મહિનામાં બીજી બે દીકરીઓના લગ્ન પણ ગોઠવવાના છે.
એ દીકરીઓને પણ ઘામ ધૂમથી પરણાવીશું.

We will give Dayjo (household material gifted to the bride) to Vadia girls and with that we will give a buffalo too. All parents wish that their daughter remains happy wherever she goes after the marriage. The two daughters who are going to get married, are going to the financially weak family after marriage
But they have a piece of land. So, it is decided that these daughters will be given utensils, Cupboard, bed etc along with buffalo. So, one daughter’s marriage would cost 1.75 and marriage of two will be Rs. 3.50 lakh.
The post which was put on Facebook got really nice response. Within a few minutes of upoloading the post Deepa told me that she is sending money and transferred Rs. 1 Lakh to my account. Not a single question.
When I called her to thank her, she said in Mumbaiya tone, “if you would have been here, I would have hugged you.” Deepa’s personality is wonderful but I will write about her some other day.
Maharshi Dave told to sponsor marriage expenses of one daughter. The association with Maharshi Dave is not very old but now he seems like an old acquaintace. Pragnesh Desai, Sharad Uncle, Kiritbhai Shah, Alkeshbhai, many friends from Facebook. But all of you trusted us and helped to get these girls married, so I am grateful to you all!

વાડિયાની દીકરીના લગ્નમાં દાયજો તો આપીશું પણ ધામેણુંયે(ભેંસ) આપીશું. દીકરી પરણે ને જે ઘરે પરણીને જાય ત્યાં સુખેથી રહે એ ભાવના દરેક મા બાપની હોય. વાડિયાની બે દીકરીઓ જે ઘરે પરણીને જવાની એ પરિવારોય આર્થિક રીતે નબળા. પણ એમની પાસે ટુકડો જમીન છે આથી દીકરીઓને દાયજામાં વાસણ, તીજોરી, પલંગ વગેરેની સાથે ભેંસ આપવાનું નક્કી કર્યું છે ને એટલે એક દીકરીના લગ્નનો ખર્ચ 1.75 ને બેના 3.50 થાય છે.
ફેસબુક પર મુકેલી પોસ્ટે ખુબ સારો પ્રતિસાદ આપ્યો. પોસ્ટ મુક્યાની મીનીટોમાં જ દીપાએ મૈ પૈસા ભેજતી હું કહીને એક લાખ સૌથી પહેલાં એકાઉન્ટમાં ટ્રા્સફર કર્યા. કોઈ જ પ્રશ્ન નહીં. થેક્યુ કહેવા ફોન કર્યો તો એકદમ મુંબઈયા સ્ટાઈલમાં તુ ઈધર હોતી તો ગલે લગા લેતીની વાત…આમ તો દીપાનું વ્યક્તિત્વ જ મજાનું છે પણ એની વિગતે વાત ફરી કરીશ…
મહર્ષી દવેએ એક દીકરીના લગ્નનો ખર્ચ આપવાની વાત કરી આભાર મહર્ષીભાઈ પરિચય બહુ જુનો નથી પણ હવે લાગે છે જાણે વર્ષોથી ઓળખીએ છીએ. પ્રગ્નેશ દેસાઈ, શરદ અંકલ, કીરીટભાઈ શાહ, અલ્કેશભાઈ, ફેસબુક પરના કેટલાય મિત્રો બધાના નામ નથી લખતી પણ કાલે બધાના નામની યાદી સાથે અનુદાન જાહેર કરીશ.પણ આપ સૌએ મારા પર શ્રધ્ધા રાખી દીકરીઓને પરણાવવા મદદનો હાથ લંબાવ્યો તે માટે આભારી છું..
