Tarlaben Shah (I prefer calling her Ma) from Valod invited me to talk about my learnings and experiences at a study meet; obviously, I was going to grab this opportunity.

The occasion also promised to provide an opportunity to refresh the memories of the late Shri Babubhai Shah ( in whose memory the study meet was organized) for his support and help in enrolling the children of nomadic communities in various Ashram Shala’s across Gujarat.

The campus of Vedhchhi Pradesh Sewa Samiti at Valod is a sacred place for many like me; it ushers memories of extraordinary human beings like Naranbhai Desai and many more.

It is the place that inspired me to work for the welfare of sugarcane workers. South Gujarat is the region that has significantly contributed to shaping the work I do at present, and all the memories rushed back as I travelled to the area.

At 85 years, Tarlaben (Ma) is tremendously active (can put any of us at shame), even on social media. I meet her son Urvinbhai for the first time and meeting them all always brings so much exuberance and warmth, like meeting our own.

As it is always said, ‘we attract our tribe’ the nature of my work has made me part of a wonderful extended family.

Thank you, Ma, for calling me to Valod and giving me this memorable opportunity to talk/interact with the students, guests, and staff for a couple of hours.

તરલાબેન શાહ મને તો એમને માં કહેવાનું જ ગમે. એમનું કહેણ વાલોડથી આવ્યું. વાંચન શિબીરમાં અનુભવોની વાત કરવાનું. 

તક ઝડપી લીધી. આમ પણ જેના સ્મરણમાં આ શિબીર યોજાય તે સ્વ. બાબુભાઈ શાહે વિચરતી જાતિઓના કલ્યાણનું કાર્ય શરૃ કર્યું તે વખતે આ સમુદાયના બાળકોને વિવિધ આશ્રમશાળાઓમાં દાખલ કરવામાં ઘણી મદદ કરેલી. એટલે એ યાદો પણ તાજી થવાની.

વેડછી પ્રદેશ સેવા સમિતી – વાલોડનું પરીસર જ કેવું પવિત્ર. નારણભાઈ દેસાઈથી લઈને અન્ય કેટલાય મહાનુભાવોની યાદ આવી જાય. 

શેરડીકામદારોએ મને સેવાકાર્યો કરવા માટે પ્રેરી એમ હું ચોક્કસ કહીશ. એમ એક રીતે દક્ષીણ ગુજરાતનો ફાળો આજે જે કાર્યો કરી રહી છું તેમાં ઘણો.. વાલોડ જતા એ બધુ પાછુ તાદૃશ્ય થયું.

ખુબ વહાલા તરલાબહેન (માં) 85 વર્ષની વયે યુવાનોને શરમાવે એવા પ્રવૃત. એમને જોઈને જ મજા પડી જાય. સોસિયલ મિડીયામાં પણ એ જબરા એક્ટીવ. એમના દિકરા ઉર્વીનભાઈને પહેલીવાર મળી પણ મજા પડી. બહુ પોતિકા લાગે આ બધા જ.

સેવાકાર્યો સાથે સંકળાવાના લીધે એક નોખો પરિવાર મને મળ્યો. અલબત રચાઈ ગયો એમ કહુ તો ચાલે.. 

આભાર માં તમે મને વાલોડ તેડાવી એ માટે ને મને સળંગ બે કલાક વિદ્યાર્થીઓ તેમજ અન્ય મહેમાનો, ત્યાંના કર્મચારીઓ સાથે વાતો કરવાની મજા પડી.

“Saheb, I have heard government gives aid to needy individuals. I am destitute and have been staying in Vav for years, but I have received nothing. My neighbors take care of me, I cannot live without tea, and I have no money to buy tea. If I can get some money, I can at least have a cup of tea!”

This very humble Ba did not hold back from sharing her concerns before a government official. It was first time I had witnessed someone requesting government aid for tea. The atmosphere in the office became jovial on hearing this unique request from Ba. The officer in charge is also a very kind-hearted gentleman.

“We will make sure you begin to receive the pension,”  the officer ensured with a smile. “But in the meantime, take this, and if you run short, please come and take more from me until I am here!” he tells Ba while handing her Rs 1000 from his wallet.

The above episode occurred in Block Development Officer Shri Jay Goswami’s office in Banaskantha’s Vav. The communities who visit his office know him as a. very empathetic officer; hence, they feel a sense of right on him. 

I travel a lot across these villages and interact with the communities. People don’t like officials who act as Sahebs, but prefer to open up and share their heartfelt concerns with officers who blend with them easily. A proper leader/officer can identify the pulse of the people and become one of them.

Jaybhai is one of those rare officials who also makes a regular donation to VSSM.

Jaybhai made sure  Ba’s form for elderly pension was filled and called up VSSM’s Naranbhai to recommend sending a monthly ration kit to Ba under our Mavjat initiative. Incidentally, we were in the region then, so upon his invitation to see Ba in person, we reached his office.

Ba was feeling immensely grateful for the administrative promptness in resolving her issues. Jaybhai also offered Ba a chair, but she kept her distance.

It is always a pleasure to meet such officials; we wish our ear we want to Jaybhai all the very best, and may his good deeds and compassion take him to great heights.

“સાહેબ સરકાર ઘરડા માવીતરોન પૈસા આલ્.. પણ મન તો કોય મલતુ નહીં. મુ નિરાધાર સુ. ઓય વાવમાં વરસોથી રહુ. અતાર લગી હેડે જતું. મોણસો હાસવય ખરા પણ મન ચા વના નહીં ચાલતું, પણ ચા પીવા પૈસા નહીં. મન સા(સહાય) મલ તો ચા – બા પી હકુ…”

માજી શબ્દોની જરાય ચોરી વગર મનમાં જે હતું એ એક અધિકારી આગળ કહી રહ્યા હતા. વળી ચા માટે સરકારી સહાય માંગવા આવ્યા હોય એવો કિસ્સો મેય પહેલીવાર જોયો.. જરા રમૂજ પડે એવું હતું પણ પેટછુટી વાત એ જે અધિકારીને કહી રહ્યા હતા એ છે પાછા એકદમ ઋજુ હૃદયના.

અધિકારીએ વાત સાંભળી મર્માળુ હસતા કહ્યું. “તમને પેન્શન મળે એવું તો કરી જ દઉશું માડી. પણ આ લ્યો” એમ કહીને એમણે એમના પોકેટમાંથી હજાર કાઢીને બાને ચા માટે આપ્યા. ને પાછુ કહી દીધું, “ખુટે તો હું જ્યાં હુદી અહીંયા છુ ન્યાં લગી મારી પાસેથી લઈ જવા..”

વાત છે બનાસકાંઠાના વાવની.. તાલુકા વિકાસ અધિકારી તરીકે જય ગોસ્વામી ત્યાં ફરજ બજાવે.. એકદમ લાગણીવાળા વ્યક્તિ.. એટલે જ કચેરીમાં આમ પોતાની મૂંઝવણ સાથે થોડા હકપૂર્વક લોકો આવી શકે. 

હું ગામોમાં ખુબ ફરુ.. લોકો સાથે વાતો ઘણી થાય. દરેક વ્યક્તિને અધિકારી કે નેતા પોતાના જેવા એમનામાં ભળી જાય એવા ગમે.. પેલા સાહેબ થઈને આવે એ એમને બહુ રૃચતા નથી.. પ્રજાની નાડી પારખી પ્રજાની વચ્ચે એમનામય થઈ જાય એ સાચ્ચો અધિકારી કે નેતા..

જયભાઈ તો અમને નિયમીત નાનુ મોટુ અનુદાન પણ મોકલે.. આવા અધિકારી બહુ જુજ…

આ માડી કચેરીમાં આવ્યા એમણે વૃદ્ધ પેન્શનનું ફોર્મ તો ભરાવ્યું. સાથે અમારા એ વિસ્તારના કાર્યકર નારણભાઈને ફોન કરીને. આ બાને તમે તમારા માવજત કાર્યક્રમ અંતર્ગત દર મહિને રાશકીટ આપો તો એમને સારુ રહે એવું કહેતા ફોન પણ કર્યો. યોગાનુયોગ એ વખતે એમના જ વિસ્તારમાં જ અમે ફરી રહ્યા હતા. એમણે બાને રૃબરૃ મળવા નિમંત્રણ આપ્યું ને અમે કચેરીએ પહોંચ્યા.

બા તો આવું ચપટીમાં કામ થાય એ વાતથી જ ધન્યતા અનુભવતા હતા. જયભાઈએ આગ્રહ કર્યો કે માડી ખુરશીમાં બેસો પણ એમણે એક જુદો મલાજો રાખ્યો…

આવા અધિકારીઓને જોઈને રાજી થવાય… પ્રિય જયભાઈ કુદરત તમારા હસ્તે ઘણા શુભકાર્યો કરાવે ને પ્રજાલક્ષી કાર્યોમાં તમે એક ઊંચાઈ પર પહોંચો તેવી શુભભાવના…

“It is believed the cat moves her kittens to 7 different homes, but our fate is worse than a kitten’s! We don’t even remember how often we have been compelled to move our house with bags and baggage. Life has been a constant struggle.”

Four years ago, the Bajaniya families living near Viramgam’s  Hansalpur crossroads had shared while narrating their apathy. Subsequently, we helped these families acquire their identity documents and made appeals from the collector’s office to that of the Chief Minister seeking a permanent resolution to issues relating to housing.

After a long wait and numerous rounds to the concerned offices, residential plots for the Bajaniya, Nat, Dafer, Saraniya, Vanzara families have been earmarked. The allotment of plots will also happen shortly.

Many families feared going to the allotted plots; hence, a meeting was arranged to inform and educate them about the developments. Finally, they did understand and agreed to move to the to-be-allotted plots. Amongst them, I liked Shakriba the most. At 65, she possessed an excellent spirit “I am ready to move to any place I am allotted land. Unfortunately, 4 of my peers passed away while waiting for their own houses; I wonder if they have been able to rest in peace! I do not want to suffer a similar fate.”

The Nat also feel whatever government allots is gold; in fact, after clearing their apprehensions, everyone believed the land they receive was worth gold. So I hope it helps everyone settle down nicely.

If they move to their own land, they will not have to fear encroachment drives; their children will be able to receive continuous education and much more.

We are grateful to the government and administration for allotting plots to these homeless families. And a special mention to the hard work and efforts of our team members  Madhubahen and Hiren for their constant follow-ups; it was their efforts of collecting the documents to filing applications that made the acquiring of plots possible. It is an honor to have such hardworking team members.

 “કહે છે કે બિલાડી બચ્ચાને જન્મ આપ્યા પછી સાત ઘરે ફરે…  પણ અમે તો જનમ્યા પછી કોણ જાણે કેટલી જગ્યા બદલીએ. આજે અહીંયા તો કાલે ક્યાંક બીજે.. કેટલીવાર છાપરાં પણ તુટે.. બહુ મુશ્કેલ જીંદગી..”

વિરમગામ હાંસલપુર ચોકડી પાસે રહેતા બજાણિયા પરિવારોએ ચાર વર્ષ પહેલાં આ કહેલું. એ પછી આ પરિવારોના ઓળખના આધારો અમે કઢાવ્યા ને કાયમી ધોરણે રહેવાની મુશ્કેલીનું નિવારણ આવે તે માટે મુખ્યમંત્રી શ્રીથી લઈને કલેક્ટર શ્રીને લખ્યું.

ઘણી લાંબી માથા કૂટો, ધક્કા પછી છેક હમણાં વિરમગામના બજાણિયા ઉપરાંત, નટ, ડફેર, સરાણિયા, વણઝારા વગેરે પરિવારોના પ્લોટની જગ્યા નીમ કરવામાં આવી. બસ ટૂંક સમયમાં આ પરિવારોને પ્લોટ પણ ફળવાશે. કેટલાક પરિવારો જ્યાં જગ્યા મળી ત્યાં જવામાં ગભરાતા હતા આથી આ બધા સાથે ક્રમશઃ બેઠક કરી એમને સમજાવ્યા. 

આખરે બધા જ સહમત થયા. મને આ બધામાં એક શકરીબા બહુ ગમ્યા. એમણે કહ્યું, ‘મને તો ક્યાંય પણ જગ્યા આપે લેવામાં કશો વાંધો નથી. મારી સાથેના ચાર જણા પોતાની જગ્યા, પોતાનું ઘરનું રટણ કરતા કરતા ગયા. જીવ અધૂરો રહ્યો હશે એમનો. પણ મારુ તો જીવતે જીવત થઈ જશે.’

 શકરીબા 65 થી વધુના પણ જુસ્સો જબરો..નટ સમાજને પણ સરકાર જે આપે તે સોનાનું એમ લાગે… જો કે હવે બધા સોનાનું માને. મૂળ જે બાબતને લઈને ભય હતો એ દૂર થયો માટે. 

બસ સૌ ઠરી ઠામ થાય. 

પોતાની જગ્યા મળે તો કોઈ કાઢી મુકશેનો ભય નહીં રહે. બાળકો ભણશે ને બીજુય ઘણું થશે… આ ઘરવિહોણા પરિવારોને પ્લોટ આપવાનું કરનાર સરકાર, કલેક્ટર શ્રી તેમજ વહીવટીતંત્રના અમે આભારી છીએ.અમારા કાર્યકર મધુબહેન અને હીરેન આમાં સખત દોડે.. બેઉની મહેનતથી આ પરિવારોના ડોક્યુમેન્ટ ભેગા કરી દરખાસ્ત પૂર્ણ કરી શક્યા. આવા સંનિષ્ઠ કાર્યકરો સાથે હોવાનું ગૌરવ…

 “No one was willing to marry their daughters with our sons!”

“Why?” I had wondered as you would after hearing this statement.

“We  lacked  pucca houses to stay in; who wants to send daughters to impoverished mud houses with tethered roofs?”

The Raval families of Patan’s Mitha Dharva village have been staying here on government wasteland in houses built of mud and straw. The families lack funds to buy land they could own. VSSM’s Mohanbhai was in contact with these families and understood their apathy. He helped them file applications for allotment of residential plots. The district Collector of Patan, Shri Anand Patel, is very compassionate human being; he immediately sanctioned plots for these families.

“We have been requesting for years, have rubbed off numerous  soles of our footwear, but the plots remained elusive.” Harjibhai shared.

It took constant follow-ups on the part of VSSM’s Mohanbhai, who would visit the collector’s office regularly. The administration was also sensitive toward these families, and the Sarpanch remained proactive. However, it took all these collective efforts for the Raval families to receive plots and aid to build houses over the plots.

As we always convey, the Rs. 1.20 lacs the government sanctions for the construction of a house is insufficient to support the construction cost of a decent home.

“Building a house happens once in a lifetime; hence we want to build a good one!” Harjibhai and others from the settlement opined. So the families began building their homes by drawing money from their savings or borrowing when they did not have enough. There would also be a time when the construction would pause because their reserves ran dry. But they managed to finish the construction and build houses big enough to meet the needs of growing families. It felt good to see the constructed, thoughtfully finished homes.

We will continue to persevere to get such homeless families their safe places. A home is a cocoon that one needs to rest a tired soul and rejuvenate to keep going.

We are grateful for our team, which does terrific work in their respective regions. For example, in Patan, Mohanbhai works hard to find needy families and link them with government welfare schemes.

I am grateful to Shri Pratulbhai Shroff for his generous support in keeping our team running; it wouldn’t have been possible any other way.

‘અમારા છોકરાંઓને છોકરીઓ આપવા કોઈ રાજી નહોતું..’આ વાક્ય સાંભળીને આવું કેમ એ પ્રશ્ન સૌ કોઈને થાય.. મનેય થયો.. જેની ચોખવટ કરતા હરજીભાઈએ કહ્યું;  ‘રહેવા પાક્કુ ઘર નહીં, છાપરાંમાં કે માટીના કાચા બનાવેલા ઘરમાં રહીએ એમાં છોકરી દેવાનું કોણ કરે?’

વાત છે પાટણના મીઠા ધરવા ગામની. વર્ષોથી રાવળ પરિવારોગામની સરકારી જમીન પર રહે. પોતાની માલીકીની જમીન ખરીદવા તેમની પાસે પૈસા નહીં. 

અમારા કાર્યકર મોહનભાઈ આ પરિવારોના સંપર્કમાં. એમણે આ પરિવારોની ઘર નહોવાની દુવિધા સમજી અને રહેણાંક અર્થે પ્લોટ ફળવાય તે માટે કલેક્ટર શ્રી આનંદ પટેલને અરજી કરી.

આનંદભાઈ એકદમ સંવેદનશીલ એમણે તુરત ….. પરિવારોને પ્લોટ ફળવાયા. 

હરજીભાઈ કહે, ‘આ ઈતિહાસ હતો બેન. અમે વર્ષોથી પ્લોટ મળે તે માટે રજૂઆત કરતા પણ અમારા ચંપલ ઘસાઈ ગયા.’

VSSMના કાર્યકર મોહનભાઈનુ કલેક્ટર કચેરીમાં સતત ફોલોઅપ ને અધિકારીઓની પણ લાગણી, માટે આ પ્લોટ મંજૂર થયા. ને મકાન બાંધવા સહાય પણ મળી. ગામના સરપંચે પણ આમાં ઘણી મદદ કરી. 

મકાન સહાય તો 1.20 લાખ મળે આમાં સરખુ ઘર કેવી રીતે બંધા?. હરજીભાઈ ને વસાહતના અન્ય કહે, ઘર એક વખત જ બાંધવાનું. આમ પોતાની બચત ક્યાંક ઉછીના પાછીના ક્યાંક થોડા પૈસા ભેગા થાય ને થોડુ ઘર બાંધે પૈસા ખુટે એટલે વિરામ લે અને વળી પાછા પૈસા ભેગા થાય એટલે પાછુ શરૃ કરે. આમ ધીમે ધીમે આ પરિવારોએ ઘર બાંધવાના શરૃ કર્યા. 

પણ એમણે બાંધેલા ઘર જોઈને રાજી થવાય. લાંબુ વિચારીને એમણે ભવિષ્યમાં દિકરા વહુ આવે તો એમના માટે અલગ આયોજન થઈ શકે એ રીતે બાંધ્યા. હમણાં મીઠા ધરવા જવાનું થયું. બંધાઈ રહેલા અને ક્યાંક બંધાતા ઘરો જોઈને રાજી થવાયું. ઘર એ પગને વિશ્રામ આપે. આગળ વધવાની ધગશ પણ એનાથી થાય. બસ આવા ઘરવિહોણા મહત્તમ લોકોને ઘર મળે તે માટે આગળ પણ મથ્યા કરીશું. અમારા કાર્યકર મોહનભાઈનો આભાર. આવા જરૃરિયાતવાળા માણસોને શોધી તેમને સરકારીની યોજનાઓ સુધી પહોંચાડવાનું કરવું પણ બહુ અગત્યનું.આવા કાર્યો કરી શકીએ તે માટે મદદ કરનાર આદરણીય પ્રતુલભાઈ શ્રોફની આભારી છું. તેઓ અમારી ટીમની દોડતી રાખવામાં મદદ કરે..

 My second book, “… pun sukh nathi aavtu”

Navjivan published my first book, ‘Sarnama Vina na Manviyo’; I was insistent it publishes my next book too. So I am grateful that Shri Vivekbhai Desai agreed to do so!

I had the opportunity to talk about the book at Navjivan yesterday. Numerous well-wishers and friends graced the occasion.

Ram Mori conducted the entire talk. It is always a joy to meet Ram and a delight to listen to him talk. 

Respected Pareshbhai Nayak, Kishor Gaud (Bapu), Bharatbhai Patel, Kashmirabahen Patel, Kantibhai Patel,  Imran Ibrahim, and many other close friends attended the event. The invite shared on our Facebook and Instagram feeds also led many friends to this book event. I am sorry for not being able to spell out every name; I am honored to receive such warmth and love. I am fortunate for the same.

1500 copies of Pun Sukh Nathi Aavvtu are nearly sold off. The book is scheduled to go for reprint soon. I consider this a huge achievement. Although I am not a writer, I choose to share all I have experienced and witnessed, human stories that have touched my heart. It is the warmth and love of the readers that both my books have been widely accepted.

“…પણ સુખ નથી આવતું”

મારુ બીજુ પુસ્તક. #નવજીવન આ પુસ્તક પ્રકાશીત કરે તેવો મારો આગ્રહ. પ્રિય વિવેકભાઈ દેસાઈએ એ આગ્રહને સ્વીકાર્યો ને સરનામાં વિનાના માનવીઓ પછી આ બીજુ પુસ્તક પણ નવજીવનમાં છપાયું.

પુસ્તક વિષે વિગતે વાત કરવાનો અવસર ગઈ કાલે નવજીવનમાં મળ્યો. ખુબ બધા સ્વજનો કાર્યક્રમમાં ઉપસ્થિત રહ્યા. 

વહાલા રામે (રામ મોરી) કાર્યક્રમનું સંચાલન કર્યું. રામને જોઈને જ એક અલગ ઉમળકો આવે, એના પર વહાલ આવે એમ એની ભાષા પણ મીઠી લાગે..

આદરણીય પરેશભાઈ નાયક, કિશોર ગૌડ (બાપુ), ભરતભાઈ પટેલ, કાશ્મીરાબહેન પટેલ, કાન્તીભાઈ પટેલ, ઈમરાન ઈબ્રાહીમ વગેરે પ્રિયજનો પણ ખાસ ઉપસ્થિત રહ્યા. કેટલા બધા સ્વજનો ફેસબુક અને ઈન્ટાગ્રામ પર મુકેલા આમ્ંત્રણને જોઈને આવ્યા. તમારા સૌના નામ નથી લખી શકી એ માટે માફી. પણ તમારા સૌનો પ્રેમ મે માથે ચડાવ્યો. આવા વહાલ માટે મારી જાતને સદભાગી માનુ છું.

શિલ્પા દેસાઈએ વાર્તાલાપની પ્રત્યક્ષ ક્ષણને કેમેરામાં કંડારી. આપ સૌની આ લાગણી માટે આભારી છું.

… પણ સુખ નથી આવતુ પુસ્તકની 1500 નકલ પૂરી થવામાં છે. પુસ્તક ઝડપથી રીપ્રીન્ટ થશે. 

મારે મન આ મોટી ઉપલબ્ધી.. હું કાંઈ લેખક નથી પણ જે જોયુ અનુભવ્યું એ લખ્યું. પણ વાચકોના પ્રેમના લીધે આ પુસ્તક ને સરનામાં વિનાના માનવીઓ આટલું વંચાયું..

Mittal Patel visits Sanjeev Upvan at Achvadiya crematorium

It is believed crematoriums are home to ghosts and evil spirits and hence should never be entered,  but now people come for picnics at the crematorium of our village!

The crematorium of Achvadiya village of Banaskantha’s Diyodar block was heavily infested with gaando baval trees. The village community decides to remove those, plant valuable trees, and turn the crematorium into a green oasis. They came together and incurred the cost of cleaning and fencing the site with barbed wire and boundary wall.

The barbed wire fencing was costing a little more than the community could mobilize, hence we contributed a part of it along with procuring and planting trees, setting up the drip irrigation system, and appointing a vriksh mitra, a person to care for and nurture the trees. The result of these combined efforts of the villagers and support from our respected Shri Krishnakant Mehta and Indira Mehta has been the creation of Sanjeev Upvan with the plantation of 7500 trees at Achvadiya crematorium.

“Ben, the crematorium comes alive with bird songs by numerous bird species living on and around the trees at the crematorium. Apart from the birds, snakes, mongoose, and hare have also made this woodland their home,” families living around Achvadiya shared.

The villagers of Achvadiya have not just made their life better but also brought well-being to the lives of numerous other beings. We are sure mother Earth and Almighty will be showering their blessings for this act of kindness.

If each village chooses to do its bit towards giving back to nature and raise 15000 to 20000 trees around their town, it would sure change the natural landscape for good.

Let us create an understanding, share a bit of our income, contribute to nature’s favourite jobs, and provide our Earth with a greener future.

‘સ્મશાનમાં ભૂત પલીત વસે એવું સૌ માને એટલે કારણ વગર સ્મશાનમાં કોઈ પગ ન મુકે.. પણ હવે અમારા સ્મશાનમાં લોકો પીકનીક કરવા આવે છે’

વાત છે બનાસકાંઠાના દિયોદરના અછવાડિયાની. ગામનું સ્મશાન ગાંડાબાવળથી ભરેલું. ગામના લોકોએ ભેગા મળીને સ્મશાનને અન્ય વૃક્ષોથી હરિયાળુ કરવાનું નક્કી કર્યું ને એ માટે સફાઈ, તારની વાડ, દિવાલ વગેરે માટે ગામે સારો એવો ખર્ચ કર્યો.

તારની વાડમાં થોડો ખર્ચ કરવો પડે એમ હતો એમાં અમે મદદ કરી,સાથે વૃક્ષો લાવી ખાડા કરી વાવવાનું, ડ્રીપથી પાણી આપવાનું ને વૃક્ષોને સાચવવા વૃક્ષમિત્રોને પગાર આપવાનું અમે કર્યું.  જેના લીધે સ્મશાનમાં 7500 થી વધુ વૃક્ષો અમે અમારા પ્રિય આદરણીય ક્રિષ્ણકાંત મહેતા અને ઈન્દિરા મહેતા તેમજ ગ્રામજનોની મદદથી વાવ્યા. 

આમ સહિયારા પ્રયાસથી સંજીવ ગ્રામવન(ઉપવન) ત્યાં ઊભુ થયું. 

અછવાડિયા આસપાસના ગામના લોકો કહે, ‘બેન સાંજના અછવાડિયાના સ્મશાનમાં જઈએ તો પક્ષીઓનો કિલ્લોલ સંભળાય. હજારો જીવો ત્યાં રહેતા થઈ ગયા. સસલા, સાપ, નોળિયા, મોરના ઘણા પરિવારો ત્યાં વસવા માંડ્યા.’

ટૂંકમાં અછવાડિયાના લોકોએ પોતાની સાથે અન્ય કેટલાય જીવોને આશરો આપ્યો. તેમના આ માનવતાભર્યા કાર્યને જોઈને મા ધરતી અને ઈશ્વર બેઉ રાજી થતા હશે..

દરેક ગામ આવું સમજણું થઈ જાય ને પોતાના ગામમાં ઓછામાં ઓછા 15000 થી  20,000 વૃક્ષો ઉછેરે તો ગામનું વાતાવરણ બદલાઈ જાય..

બસ સૌ સમજણ કેળવીએ ને ધરતીને હરિયાળી કરવા કુદરતના ગમતા આ કાર્ય માટે આપણી કમાણીમાંથી થોડું બાજુએ કાઢીએ…

Mittal Patel meets Ramila Ba during her visit to Kheda

The joy of bringing a smile to someone’s face will always remain one of that matchless moments.

Ramila Ba lives in  Kheda’s Bamroli village in a small hut she calls home. Ramila Ba suffers from leprosy, so finding work is a challenge; her son is mentally unstable, so the responsibility of Ramila Ba still needs to worry about bringing food to the plate.

It has been many years since Ramila Ba’s husband passed away, yet she hasn’t received any benefit under the government’s widow pension scheme. Moreover, Ramila Ma has lost her fingers to leprosy, so getting the fingerprints scanned for biometric verification is impossible. As a result, her ration card has also fallen silent.

The pain and anguish individuals like Ramila Ma tackle on a daily basis can be comprehended only by meeting them, yet they have no complaints in life. So VSSM’s Rajnnibhai recommended Ramila Ma for a monthly ration kit so that she doesn’t have to live at the mercy of others.  

The Maavjat initiative has continued to receive your encouragement since its beginning. And the growing support helps us reach individuals like Ramila Ma. Along with the assurance of a meal, the ration kit has brought much-needed cheer into Ramila Ma’s life.

Ramila Ma came to meet me and express her gratitude when I was in Kheda recently. It gets me thinking if it is me they should be thanking!

The wise old Devu Ma once mentioned that the almighty sends the right person to the place they need at the right time. And I believe in her wise words.

VSSM will take the matter of activating the ration card and linking her to a widow pension with the respective authorities. The district collector of Kheda Shir Bachani saheb is compassionate towards the needs of these low-income families.

But for now, the ration kit has brought well-being to Ramila Ma; her toothless grin reveals the joy.

Our gratitude to all of you for the support you provide; it helps us bring food and care to more than 370 needy elderly.

કોઈના મોંઢા પર સ્મીત લાવવામાં નિમિત્ત બનવું એનું સુખ કેટલું મોટુ?આ ફોટોમાં દેખાય એ રમીલાબા. ખેડાના વસૌના બામરોલીમાં કોઈની જગ્યામાં છાપરુ કરીને રહે. 

એમને રક્તપીતની બિમારી. એટલે ખાસ કોઈ કામે ન બોલાવે. દિકરો છે પણ એ માનસીક વિકલાંગ. આવામાં રમીલાબા હખેડખે પોતાનું ગાડુ ગબડાવે. 

એમના પતિ ગુજરે ગયે ઘણો સમય થયો પણ તેમને વિધવા સહાય મળતી નથી. મૂળ તેમનું આધારકાર્ડ નથી નીકળતું અમે એ નીકળે એ માટે કોશીશ કરીએ છીએ પણ તેમના આંગળા રક્તપીતની તકલીફના કારણે ખવાઈ ગયા છે. રાશનકાર્ડ અંગૂઠાની છાપ ન આવવાના કારણે સાયલન્ટ થઈ ગયું છે. સાયલન્ટ કેવો શબ્દ છે નહીં?

કેવી તકલીફમાં લોકો જીવે છે એ જ્યારે આવા સ્નેહીજનોને મળીએ ત્યારે સમજાય છતાંય તેમને ફરિયાદ નથી.. રમીલાબાની સ્થિતિ જોઈને અમારા કાર્યકર રજનીભાઈએ તેમને દર મહિને રાશનકીટ આપવા કહ્યું જેથી તેમને કોઈની ઓશિયાળી ન રહે. 

તમે સૌ આ કાર્યમાં મદદ કરો તે રમીલાબાને રાશન આપવાનું તો કરવું જ પડે ને? એ કર્યું પણ ખરુ… રમીલાબા આ વાતથીયે ઘણા રાજી.ખેડા ગઈ ત્યારે એ ખાસ મળવા આવ્યા. આભાર વ્યક્ત કર્યો. ક્યારેક થાય ખરેખર આ આભારની હું હકદાર ખરી? 

અમારા દેવુ માએ કહેલું એમ, જ્યારે જેની જરૃર પડે ત્યારે કુદરત એને એ જગ્યા પર મોકલી દે. બસ આ વાત મારા ખ્યાલથી સાચી..

રમીલાબાને ઝડપથી વિધવા સહાય ને એમનું રેશનકાર્ડ બોલતું એટલે કે અનાજ આપતુ થઈ જાય એવું એ માટે કલેક્ટર શ્રીને રજૂઆત કરીશું. કલેક્ટર શ્રી બાચાણી સાહેબ ખૂબ ભલા એ કાર્ય પાર પાડશે તેવી આશા છે. 

પણ રમીલાબાને આપણી રાશનકીટથીયે સાતા છે.. તેમના બોખલા મોંઢાનું સ્મીત એ દર્શાવે છે.  

આપ સૌનો આભાર તમે સૌ સાથે છો એટલે આવા 370 થી વધુ માવતરોને દર મહિને રાશન પહોંચાડી શકીયે છીએ એ માટે આપ સૌ પ્રત્યે કૃતજ્ઞતા…

Durgadevi and Galbaram meets Mittal Patel at VSSM’s office

Durgadevi is just 26  years old, and at such a young age, she navigates through a deluge of issues.

Durgadevi’s battle with cervical cancer has left her mentally and physically tired. While her husband Galbaram works as an electrician, she takes up tailoring and taking care of their 5-year-old son. The couple hails from the same village in Rajasthan. Soon after Durgadevi was diagnosed with cancer, her treatment began at a private hospital. But treating cancer in a private hospital is an expensive affair. The couple was drained of their savings within a few months of treatment. Finally, they had no choice but to move to Civil Hospital. However, to benefit from free treatment in Civil, one needs to be a resident of Gujarat, which this family was not. Hence, they continued to spend money on the treatment, and the debt kept mounting.

VSSM, with the support from respected Krishnakant Mehta and Dr. Indira Mehta, provides financial and logistics support under the Sanjivani Arogya Setu initiative to impoverished families tackling medical emergencies. Our dynamic Kiran manages the program and met Durgadevi and  Galbaram at the Civil hospital premises. After listening to their woes, he brought the couple to our office.

“Won’t your family help you under such circumstances?” I very naturally asked during the conversation. Over the years, we have learned that if the family members understand enough, they do help; otherwise, most look the other way during such difficult times.

Tears rolled out of Durgadevi’s eyes on listening to my question.

“I have no one except him!” she said softly, looking at Galbaram.

“Parents?”

“They have ended their relationship  with me!”

The couple married out of love, against the will of their families. Living in the same village was a little awkward. Hence they arrived in Gandhinagar and began their life afresh. They were building their life together and had a son soon, but the ties with the family continued to remain strained, and their world shattered after Durgadevi was diagnosed with cancer. She is constantly worried about her son’s future if anything were to happen to her. The cancer treatment has financially ruined the family,  Galbaram has incurred debt to meet the medical expenses.

We provided them with some financial support and a prayer to the almighty to bring peace and well-being to this family.

દુર્ગાદેવી છવ્વીસ જ વર્ષના. આટલી નાની ઉંમરે તેમના માથે આભ ફાટ્યું. 

સર્વાઈલ કેન્સરથી એ પીડાય. માનસીક અને શારીરિક રીતે એ થાકી ગયેલા. પતિ ગલબારામ ઈલેકટ્રીશય તરીકે કામ કરે. જ્યારે પોતે પોતાના પાંચ વર્ષના દીકરાને સંભાળતા સંભાળતા સિલાઈ કામ કરે. બેઉ વતની રાજસ્થાનના ને વળી પાછા એક ગામના. દુર્ગાદેવીની બિમારીની ખબર પડી એટલે ખાનગી દવાખાનામાં સારવાર શરૃ થઈ. પણ આ બિમારી તો ભંડાર ખાલી કરી નાખે એવી. આખરે બેઉ થાક્યા ને સિવીલમાં આવ્યા. સિવીલમાં સારવાર ફ્રીમાં થાય પણ આ પરિવારો પાસે ગુજરાતના પુરાવા નહીં ને રાજસ્થાનના દર્દીની સારવાર વિનામુલ્યે થાય નહીં.આમ પૈસાની પણ સતત ખેંચ રહે જેના લીધે માથે દેવું થઈ ગયું.

સંજીવની આરોગ્ય સેતુ અને સહાય કાર્યક્રમ અંતર્ગત અમે ગંભીર બિમારથી પીડાતા વ્યક્તિઓને મદદ કરીએ. આદરણીય ક્રિષ્ણકાંત મહેતા તેમજ ઈન્દિરા મહેતા આ કાર્યમાં આર્થિક મદદ કરે. આ કાર્યક્રમ અમારો કિરણ સંભાળે. તે એક દિવસ સિવીલ હોસ્પીટલમાં કિરણને આ બઉ મળી ગયા અને તકલીફોની વાત કરી. 

કિરણ જ્યારે આ બેઉને ઓફીસ લઈ આવ્યો ત્યારે પ્રથમ સવાલ તમારા પરિવારજનો મદદ કરે કે નહીં તે અનાયાસે પુછાઈ ગયો. આમ પણ આવા કિસ્સામાં પરિવારજનો જો સારા હોય તો મદદ કરે બાકી આ ટાણે જ પારકા પોતાનાનો વધારે ખ્યાલ આવે. પણ મારા આ સવાલ સામે દુર્ગાદેવીની આંખોમાં પાણી આવી ગયા. પછી ધીમા અવાજે ગલબારામ સામે જોઈને કહ્યું, ‘આ દુનિયામાં આમના સિવાય મારુ કોઈ નહીં.”મા-બાપ નથી?’

‘છે પણ એમણે સંબંધ કાપી નાખ્યો.’દર્ગાદેવીએ પ્રેમલગ્ન કર્યા એ પણ પરિવારની વિરુદ્ધ જઈને બસ એ પરિવારજનોને ન ગમ્યું. એક જ ગામમાં પિયરીયા સામે હોય ને જીવવું મુશ્કેલ બની જાય એટલે બેઉ પિયર છોડી ગાંધીનગર આવી ગયા. ત્યાં ભાડાના ઘરમાં રહીને બેઉ કામ કરવા લાગ્યા. સંસાર સુખેથી ચાલતો. હા વસવસો પિયરીયાનો સાથ નથીનો હતો પણ એ બધુ દીકરો આવે પણ ઠીક ન થયું.

દુર્ગાદેવી સર્વાઈકલ કેન્સરથી પીડાય એમને પોતાને કશું થઈ જશે તો પોતાના પાંચ વર્ષના દિકરાનું શું એ ચિંતા કોરી ખાય છે. જ્યારે આર્થિક રીતે પરિવાર સાવ ખલાસ થઈ ગયો છે. ગલબારામે દુર્ગાદેવીની સારવાર માટે દેવું કર્યું છે. અમે નાનકડો ટેકો આ બેઉને કર્યો. સાથે દુર્ગાદેવીને ઠીક કરવા તેમજ તેમના પીયરિયા તેમને માફ કરીને અપનાવી લે તે માટે કુદરતને પ્રાર્થના.. #mittlpatel #vssm
