We recently organised a gathering of Saraniyaa Community leaders at Anandpar in Morbi. The community leaders shared their woes, the general apathy and gratitude towards  the warmth and support they receive from VSSM’s committed team members Kanubhai and Chayabahen. “Bahen, we were unable to find one document. The entire village was against our residing in the village. Kanubhai and Chayabahen stood beside us  like a rock and asked the village to provide us land for permanent settlement.”

VSSM’s team has been instrumental in bringing hope, spreading joy in the lives of thousands of nomadic families. Only the fortunate are blessed with  strong, devoted and hardworking team. It is a team that brings laurels to VSSM and me. I feel immensely fortunate and proud to be a part of such a team.

Since several years, Takhubhagat has been residing on a small hill at some distance from Anandpar. Some individuals in the village were against granting permeant settlement to him. During the gathering we requested the village Sarpanch and other leaders to participate in the meeting. The case was presented and Sarpanch agreed to providing land to the families.

We also talked about the need for deaddiction, sending children to school, general awareness amongst the community. “VSSM is our guardian, never  ever leave our side.” Such sentiments are truly overwhelming.

The commitment of Kanubhai, Chayabahen, Vaaghabhai, Takhubhagat   ensured a productive gathering.

“Only the worthy can wear a  Paghdi/head-gear, it is not for everyone,” said Takhubhagat while placing the Paghadi on my head. Indeed, a true honour!!

ખભે ભારેભરખમ સરાણ લઈને ગામે ગામ છરી ચાકા હજાબ્બા હોય તો….ની બૂમ પાડતા સરાણિયાને તમે દીઠા હશે…

ગાડા લઈને એક ગામથી બીજે ફર્યા કરતા આ સરાણિયા પરિવારો આજે સરકારી ખરાબાની જગ્યામાં સ્થાયી થયા છે. સરકાર પાસે રહેવા પોતાના નામનો પ્લોટ તેમજ પોતાની ઓળખના તમામ પુરાવા મળે એ માટેની મથામણ VSSM સાથે રહી તેઓ કરી રહ્યા છે..

આવા સરાણિયા સમાજના આગેવાનોની એક બેઠક મોરબી જિલ્લાના આણંદપરમાં અમે કરી. બેઠકમાં સૌએ પોતાની વેદના વ્યક્ત કરી સાથે સંસ્થાના સંનિષ્ઠ કાર્યકર કનુભાઈ અને છાયાબહેન થકી મળતી હૂંફની પણ વાત કરી.’બેન એક કાગળિયું જડતું નહોતું, ગામ આખુ અમારા વસાવટ હામે વિરોધ કરતું ન્યાં કનુભાઈ અને છાયાબહેન અમારી પડખે રીયા અને આજે ગામે અમને રેવા હાટુ જમીન આપવાની કીધું..

‘VSSMના કાર્યકરો થકી હજારો પરિવારોને સુખ અપાવવામાં નિમિત્ત બનવાનું થયું છે. મજબૂત કાર્યકરોની આવી ટીમ મળવી નસીબની વાત છે.. મને ગર્વ છે તમામ કાર્યકર પર જેમના થકી હું અને VSSM ઊજળા છીએ…

વર્ષોથી તખુભગત આણંદપરગામથી દૂર ટેકરા પર છાપરાં નાખીને રહેતા.. ગામ રહેવા કાયમી જગ્યા આપેની માંગ એમની વર્ષોની પણ ગામના કેટલાક આ બાબતે સહમત નહોતા.

સરાણિયા સમાજના આગેવાનોની બેઠકમાં ગામના સરપંચ અને અન્ય આગેવાનોને અમે ઉપસ્થિત રાખ્યા અને સરપંચ શ્રીએ જમીન આપવાની સહમતી દર્શાવી.

સરાણિયા આગેવાનોએ આ બેઠકમાં પોતાના સમાજમાં વધારે જાગૃતતા આવે, બાળકો ભણતા થાય તેમજ વ્યસન મુક્ત સમાજ બેને તે માટે પ્રયત્નો કરવાની વાત કરી અને સૌથી અગત્યનું ‘સંસ્થા અમારી માવતર અમારો હાથ ઝાલી રાખજો’ની એમની વાત પર નતમસ્તક થવાયું.. કનુભાઈ છાયાબહેન, વાધાભાઈ, તખુભગત સૌની કટીબદ્ધતાના લીધે આ બેઠક સુંદર રીતે પૂર્ણ થઈ… પાઘડી બધાને નો પહેરાવાય.. લાયકને જ પહેરાવાય એવું કહીને તખુભગતે પાઘડી પહેરાવી…એમણે આપેલી આ ઈજ્જત માટે કૃતજ્ઞતાભાવ…

Gandhiji, my ideal !!

I wasn’t fortunate enough to be born in a Gandhian era but, could make up for that loss  by deciding to study in Gujarat Vidhyapith,  a university established by Gandhiji.

I had just finished my Masters in Journalism, M. Phil seemed lit  the next stop. It was  then that I had decided to pursue my M. Phil from Gujarat Vidhyapith.

Today, I was at Vidhyapith to speak at ‘Nisbat’, a talk series hosted by the Social Work Department.

The program had presence of professors as well as students. I spoke about VSSM’s work with the nomadic and de-notified communities for over 2 hours.

It was a moment to be grateful for, to be given an opportunity to speak at the very institute that to an extent helped me plunge to take up the cause I have dedicated myself to!!

ગાંધીજી..

મારા આદર્શ…

ગાંધીના સાનિધ્યમાં રહેવાનું તો નસીબ નહોતું પણ એમના પ્રત્યેના વિશેષ પ્રેમના લીધે ગાંધી સ્થાપીત #ગુજરાત_વિદ્યાપીઠમાં ભણવાનું નક્કી કર્યું.

પત્રકારત્વમાં માસ્ટર થઈ ગયું હતું હવે એમ. ફીલ બાકી હતું જે માટે ૨૦૦૮માં વિદ્યાપીઠમાં એડમીશન લીધું અને એમફીલ પૂરું કર્યું

આજે આજ વિદ્યાપીઠમાં ‘નિસ્બત’ કાર્યક્રમમાં વિચરતી જાતિઓ સાથે કરેલા કામોની વાત કરવા જવાનું થયું.

કાર્યક્રમમાં વિદ્યાર્થીગણ, અધ્યાપકગણ સૌ હાજર રહ્યા. બે કલાક સળંગ વિચરતી જાતિઓના કામોની વાત થઈ..

જ્યાં ભણ્યા હોઈએ, જેમણે ભણાવ્યા હોય તેમની સામે હાલમાં આપણે શું કરી રહ્યા છીએ તે કહેવા મળે તે ઘડી ધન્યતાની..

Kashima gets her ration kit from VSSM

“I worked until I could, I cannot anymore. Walking a few feet is difficult for me now. I beg for food from the families in this village. During rains, I remain confined to home. If someone from the neighbourhood remembers to bring food they come and give me or else I just drink water and go to sleep at night.”

Kashima, from Patan’s Bandhvad shared her sentiments when we asked her if she appreciates the fact that now a monthly ration kit reaches her from VSSM. 

It is the very generous gesture from well-wishing donors of VSSM that it has had the good fortune to become instrumental in providing ration kits to the elderly, needy and destitute individuals.

VSSM has encountered numerous such individuals who struggle to find enough grains to make even a single meal in a day. Couples with no kids to look after, couples who have children but have been left to fend for themselves. In some instances, the children do care but they have difficulties in managing two square meals in a day. We were contemplating on how to takes care of such destitute elders. “Help us with food,” was the suggestion most had. It was an apt suggestion but cost was a major concern. We planned to go ahead with the suggestion hoping that like always help will pour in for sure. 

A few days back VSSM’s Mohanbhai was in the villages of Patan to distribute the ration kits to the elderly when he got generously showered with as many blessings as they could. Kashima spoke for the video and made sure she conveyed her blessings to me too…

VSSM has decided to provide a ration kit to such needful elderly every month. You can choose to be their guardian son or daughter and support towards the kits.

 It should be noted that some elderly do receive old-age pension from the government. However, that amount gets used in expenses towards their medicines etc. 

Mohanbhai, team members like you are big assets to the organisation. It VSSM has been able to find the needy just because of your efforts. Team members like you enable VSSM to reach its closer to its goals…

‘કોમ થતું તું’ તો હુદી કીધું.. હવ હેડાતું નઈ. કોમેય થતું નઈ એટલ ગોમમોથી મોગીન ખાવા ખઉં.. વરહાદ પોણી હોય તો ઘેર બેહી રહું.. વાહના કોઈન ખબર પડ અન ઇમના ઘેર થોડું પડ્યું હોય તો મન ખવાર નઇ તો પોણી પીન પડ્યા રેવાનું…’

પાટણના બંધવડ ગામના કાશીમાને મહિનાનું અનાજ આપ્યાં પછી અનાજ આપ્યું તે ગમ્યું? એમ પૂછ્યું એના જવાબમાં એમણે ઉપરની વાત કહી…
આવા નોધારા પરિવારોના આધાર બનવાનું નસીબ આપ જેવા પ્રિયજનોની મદદથી શક્ય બન્યું છે..
કહે છે અન્ન દાન મહા દાન.. પણ આ દાન યોગ્ય વ્યક્તિને, યોગ્ય જગ્યાએ આપવું અગત્યનું…

ગામડાંઓમાં વિહરતા એવાં કેટલાંય માણસોને અમે દીઠા. આ બધાને અને અનાજ ને જાણે આડવેર હતું..

ક્યાંક એકલા તો કયા પતિ પત્ની બેય બુઢાપાના ભારને વહન કરતા… બાળકો હોય તો જરા આશરો રેત પણ બાળકો નસીબમાં નહોતા.
જો કે કેટલાક એવા માવતર પણ હતા જેમને બાળકો હતા પણ એતો પોતાનો માળો લઈને માં કે બાપને મૂકીને જોજનો દૂર જઈ બેઠા… પોતાનું પરાણે પૂરું કરે આવામાં માં બાપ એની મેળે જ રેઢા મુકાઈ ગયેલા…
આવી કપરી હાલતમાં જીવતા માવતરને જીવનની પાછલી અવસ્થા વસમી લાગે નહિ માટે શું કરી શકાય એ વિચારતા જ કેટલાક માવતરોએ બે ટંકના રોટલા જડી જાય એવું ગોઠવી આપવા કહ્યું… વિચાર સારો જ હતો પણ આ બધાના ખર્ચની પણ ચિંતા કરવાની ને?
પણ ખેર હંમેશા કુદરત મદદ કરે છે તે આમાંય કરશે એમ વિચારી આ માવતરના જઠરાગ્નિને સંતોષવાનું અમે નક્કી કર્યું..

તાજેતરમાં પાટણ જિલ્લામાં રહેતાં વડીલોને VSSM ના કાર્યકર મોહનભાઈ એ રાશનની કીટ આપી પછી એમણે આશીર્વાદનો ધોધ વરસાવ્યો…અને કાશીમાં એ તો વિડિયોમાંય કહ્યું અને મને ફોન પર પણ વિશેષ વાત કરી…
દર મહિને આ માવતરને અનાજ આપવાનું અમે નક્કી કર્યું છે… આપને પણ આ માં બાપના શ્રવણ એ દીકરો કે દીકરી કોઈપણ સ્વરૂપમાં બનવા અને આ કાર્યમાં સક્રિય મદદ કરવા વિનંતી…
ફોટોમાં રાશન કીટ સાથે આપણા પ્રિયજનો…અને આ લોકો જેવામાં રહે છે એ પણ દશ્યમાન છે…

સરકારની મદદ કેટલાક વડીલોને વૃધ્ધ પેન્શનના રૂપમાં મળે પણ એ એમને દવા કે અન્ય ખર્ચ માટે મજરે આવે…આ ખાસ નોંધવું રહ્યું…

તમારા જેવા કાર્યકરો જ vssm ની સાચી મુડી છે…

When a District Collector says so, one does feel grateful and overwhelmed  at the same time.

After years of working with the authorities I have come to understand that even if one has the authority and capacity to give; if the sensitivity, will and priority are missing  the giving does not happen.

I always say be it happiness or material things the more you share the more you gain.

Who am I, where do I come from… the loss of identity and the constant struggle to establish it exhausts  the nomadic and de-notified families. It is a biggest gift to give them a place from where they are never threatened to leave. May the receiver and provider of this happiness always remain blessed.

In the past, I have often written about the tremendous work done by the District Collector of Surendranagar Shri K. Rajesh. His work is so exemplary that a mention here every couple of days wouldn’t be enough.

During my interactions with the senior government officials I often convey, “Why not include ‘compassion, sensitivity and care’  along with the ‘law and enforcement’ in the training modules for the government officials!!” The response I receive with a smile is, “That too is part of the curriculum, but it also depends upon the individual receiving the training.”

And that is true too. It all depends upon the individual at the helm of the affairs. Sensitivity, empathy, compassion can’t be taught, but are ingrained from early childhood. Parents, teachers, extended family members have an important role to play here. The African proverb “It takes village to raise a child!!” seems apt to quote here. It is a social and collective responsibility to raise children who are caring towards the needs and feelings of their fellow humans.

The world would definitely be a better place when that happens. Utopian indeed. And officers like K Rajesh are trying their bit to create that utopian world. And that is something to cheer about.

“Ben, we haven’t seen an officer like this. We feel as if he is one of us. He stops his car to inquire about our well-being!!” Khedapji Salat shared while I was on my way to Morbi. 9 families here have been allotted residential plots by Shri Rajesh’s administration.  Trust me when a nomad feels the person seems like his/her own, it calls for a celebration.

Well, we are going to work really hard to help Shri K. Rajesh realise his dream of allotting residential plots to 500 families this Diwali.

“Until you are in charge of Surendranagar, we can breathe a sigh of relief!!” we feel like conveying this to Shri Rajesh with our pranams. He is living the lines, “Vaishnavjan to tene kahiye….”

 Shri ‘દિવાળીની ભેટમાં ૫૦૦ પરિવારો ને પોતાનું સરનામું આપવું છે. તમે હર્ષદને(અમારો કાર્યકર) એ માટે વધુ મહેનત કરવા કહેશો…’

એક કલેક્ટર આવું કહે એ ઘડી ધન્યતાની..

આપવાની સત્તા, ક્ષમતા બેય હોય પણ લાગણી સભર સંવેદના અને પ્રાથમિક્તા હોય નહિ તો આપી શકાતું નથી. એ અનુભવે સમજી છું.

હંમેશા બધે કહેતી હોવું છું વહેંચવાથી વધે એ પછી વસ્તુ હોય કે ખુશી…

હું કોણ, ક્યાંનો એ ઓળખની મથામણ વચ્ચે જીવતા વિચરતા પરિવારોને સરનામું એ પણ કાયમી, જ્યાંથી કોઈ એને ખાલી ના કરાવે એ આપવું એ સૌથી મોટી સુખરૂપ ભેટ.

આ સુખ આપનાર અને લેનાર બેય પક્ષને સાતા પહોંચાડે..

સુરેન્દ્રનગર કલેકટર શ્રી કે. રાજેશ માટે મે અગાઉ પણ ઘણું લખ્યું છે. પણ વારે વારે લખવાનું મન થાય એવા ઉમદા કામો એમના થકી થઈ રહ્યા છે.

સરકારમાં ઉચ્ચ સ્તરે બેઠેલા અધિકારીઓ સાથે જ્યારે પણ વાત થાય ત્યારે હંમેશા કહેતી હોવું છું અધિકારીઓની તાલીમમાં કાયદા કાનૂન તો તમે શીખવો છો પણ એમાં લાગણી, સંવેદના પણ શીખવો… જવાબમાં એ લોકો સુંદર સ્મિત સાથે કહે,

‘અમારા સિલેબસમાં એ છે જ પણ એ દરેક વ્યક્તિ પર નિર્ભર છે…’

વ્યક્તિ પર આધારિત વાળી વાત સો ટકા સાચી.. કોઈ યુનિવર્સિટી લાગણી શીખવી શકે નહિ, એ ભીતરમાં પડ્યું હોય તો આપો આપ ઊગી નીકળે. કદાચ માં – બાપ અને પરિવાર એ સંસ્કારમાં અગત્યની ભૂમિકા ભજવી શકે.. બાકીનું કામ શિક્ષકગણ પૂરું કરે તો દુનિયામાં વૈમનસ્ય ના રહે. ચોતરફ પ્રેમ અને કરુણાનું વાતવરણ નિર્માણ પામે. બીજાની તકલીફ મને પણ પીડે..

ખેર ઘણા કહે આ તો આદર્શ પરિસ્થિતિની વાત થઈ..

પણ એ આદર્શ કે. રાજેશ જેવા પ્રેમાળ કરુણાસભર માણસોમાં જોઈને રાજીપો થાય..

આજે મોરબી જતાં ખેડપજી સલાટ કે જેમના નવ પરિવારોને કલેકટર શ્રી એ રહેવા માટે પ્લોટ ફાળવ્યા એમની સાથે વાત થઈ એમણે કહ્યું, ‘બેન આવા અધિકારી આજ સુધી નથી દીઠા અમારા જેવા ગરીબ માણસોને જુએ તો ગાડી થોભાવી અમારી ખૈરિયત પૂછે… જાણે અમારો જ માણસ જોઈ લ્યો…’

એમનામાં એક હોવાનું પ્રમાણપત્ર વિચરતી જાતિના પરિવારો આપે મારે મન આ કોઈ એવોર્ડથી ઓછું નથી. .

ખેર કલેકટર શ્રી નું ૫૦૦ પરિવારોને પ્લોટ ફાળવવાનું સ્વપ્ન સાકાર કરવા અમે મથીશુ.. અને કે રાજેશ ને એટલું કહેવાનું મન જરૂર થાય કે તમે છો એટલે મને સુરેન્દ્રનગરમાં નિરાંત છે.

વૈષ્ણ વજનની વાત ને સાર્થક કરનાર કે રાજેશ ને પ્રણામ..

ફોટોમાં વિચરતી જાતિના પરિવારોએ નેતાને હાર પહેરાવી સન્માન કરે એમ નાનકડા પણ પ્રેમ ભર્યા ફૂલહારથી કલેકટર શ્રીનું સન્માન એમની તકલીફ હળવી કરવા બદલ કર્યું.

જે છાપરામાં એ લોકો રહે છે એ અને એમની સાથેના નોખા પ્રેમના હકથી હું એમની સાથે… વીડિયોમાં પોતાની લાગણી ખેડપજીએ વ્યક્ત કરી…

“She will not eat at our place!” Kokila responded in the same dialect,  thinking that I do not understand it.

Both of them were quite after the response Kokila gave.

“Why, can’t I eat food cooked by you?” I asked Kokila.

“You understand our language?” Kokila was pleasantly surprised.

“Why wouldn’t I understand? Come serve me food. Today I am having my meal with you all!!”

The couple was delighted to hear me ask for food. “Ben is so different!!”

“I don’t know whether I am different, but I know for sure that I have tremendous affection for you all!”

I relished the meal of Rotla (millet flatbreads) and onion potato curry.

The Fulvadee families of Kankar always tell us that no one in the society cares for them and with the affection we shower all of us, Naranbhai, Ishwarbhai, I are unlike everyone else they interact with.

To be offered food is epitome of love and respect a family shows  and one should always be grateful towards their gesture. Why discriminate  on the basis of caste and class !!
